The case is not a finding that Apple violated the law or that wearing an Apple Watch band causes illness: the latest ruling allowed several claims to continue while leaving the central scientific and legal questions unresolved.
Apple sued over PFAS allegations involving Apple Watch bands
Apple is facing a proposed class action alleging that certain Apple Watch bands made with fluoroelastomer contain elevated levels of PFAS, including perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA). The case is still being litigated: a March 16, 2026 order allowed several claims to proceed past the pleading stage, but it did not decide that Apple violated the law, that every challenged band contains a dangerous amount of PFAS, or that anyone was injured by wearing one.
Which Apple Watch bands are involved?
The lawsuit focuses on bands made with fluoroelastomer. The products identified in the litigation include:
| Band | Material description in Apple materials | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Sport Band | Custom high-performance fluoroelastomer | Connects the product to the material examined in the allegations; it does not establish a particular PFHxA concentration. |
| Nike Sport Band | Perforated fluoroelastomer | Identifies the material used in the accessory listing; it does not prove that every Nike Sport Band has the same chemical profile. |
| Ocean Band | Fluoroelastomer and titanium | Shows that fluoroelastomer is part of the band’s listed construction; it does not prove that the titanium or every component contains PFAS. |
Apple’s product and accessory pages describe the materials above, but those descriptions do not independently show whether a particular band contains PFHxA, how much it contains, or how much—if any—transfers to a wearer’s skin. The lawsuit also should not be read as applying automatically to every Apple Watch band, every size, every color, or every manufacturing year.

What the lawsuit alleges
The original complaint was filed on January 21, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The case is Cavalier et al. v. Apple Inc., No. 5:25-cv-00713.
The plaintiffs allege that Apple presented Apple Watch products as health-oriented and environmentally responsible, and as products suitable for prolonged wear and exercise. They say Apple failed to disclose the presence of PFAS in certain bands. Their theory is that a fluoroelastomer band may remain against the wrist for long periods, including while a wearer is perspiring, creating a potential route for dermal exposure.
Those statements are allegations in a complaint. They are not findings that Apple intentionally concealed a hazard, that the bands expose users to a clinically significant dose, or that wearing an Apple Watch band caused a particular illness.
What the scientific study found
The main published evidence cited in the dispute is a study titled Presence of Perfluorohexanoic Acid in Fluoroelastomer Watch Bands, published online on December 18, 2024, in Environmental Science & Technology Letters.

Researchers bought 22 watch bands in the United States from multiple brands and price points. They used particle-induced gamma-ray emission spectroscopy to screen the bands for total fluorine. They then used solvent extraction and targeted liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to examine 20 PFAS.
The study reported that:
- 15 of the 22 bands had total fluorine concentrations above 1%, which the researchers said suggested the use of fluoroelastomer;
- PFHxA was reported in nine samples, with results ranging from below the limit of detection to 16,662 nanograms per gram (ng/g); and
- the PFHxA was readily extractable from the surfaces of the fluoroelastomer bands examined.
The University of Notre Dame’s summary of the research likewise reports that nine of the 22 tested bands contained elevated PFHxA and that the highest concentrations exceeded 1,000 parts per billion. The study did not measure how much PFHxA moves from a particular Apple band into a person’s skin during normal use. It also did not establish that wearing one of the tested bands causes a disease or other specific health outcome.

The researchers specifically called for more exposure research because knowledge about dermal absorption of PFHxA remains limited. That distinction matters: detecting a chemical on a product surface is not the same as measuring a wearer’s absorbed dose.
What plaintiffs’ Apple-band testing allegedly found
In addition to citing the academic study, the plaintiffs say an independently commissioned laboratory tested a new black Apple Watch Sport Band purchased directly from Apple’s website on March 13, 2025. According to the complaint as summarized in the court’s order, that test reported PFHxA at 1,020.114 ng/g.
At the motion-to-dismiss stage, the court was required to evaluate whether the complaint adequately stated legal claims and to treat well-pleaded factual allegations as true for that limited purpose. The order did not independently verify the laboratory result, determine the band’s long-term exposure implications, or resolve whether Apple is legally liable.
The plaintiffs also allege that Apple internally classified PFHxA as “Reportable” in 2018 and later as “Restricted,” with a 25-parts-per-billion threshold referenced in the pleadings. That allegation is relevant to the plaintiffs’ concealment and consumer-protection theories. It should not be reported as a final judicial finding that Apple knowingly sold unlawful or dangerous products.
What Apple’s PFAS policy says
Apple’s November 2022 PFAS commitment says the company eliminated PFOA and PFOS from its products by restricting their use in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Apple also said it added restrictions in 2021 for certain PFCA substances and PFHxS-related substances and was prioritizing further PFAS phaseout work according to expected environmental impact.
That policy is important context, but it does not answer every question raised by the lawsuit. In particular, it does not establish that all PFAS had been removed from every Apple Watch band, and it is not a public admission that the challenged Sport Bands contain hazardous levels of PFHxA. A company’s restriction or phaseout policy may coexist with allegations about a particular chemical, material, supplier, product generation, or testing result.

What the March 16, 2026 court order decided
Judge P. Casey Pitts granted Apple’s motion to dismiss in part and denied it in part. The ruling concerned the sufficiency of the complaint, not the ultimate truth of the allegations.
| Claim or theory | Result at this stage |
|---|---|
| Fraudulent concealment or omission | Allowed to proceed past the motion-to-dismiss stage |
| Negligent misrepresentation | Allowed to proceed past the motion-to-dismiss stage |
| Unjust enrichment | Allowed to proceed past the motion-to-dismiss stage |
| California Unfair Competition Law claims | Allowed to proceed past the motion-to-dismiss stage |
| Fraudulent misrepresentation | Dismissed with leave to amend |
| Breach of the implied warranty of merchantability | Dismissed with leave to amend |
The plaintiffs filed a second amended complaint on April 13, 2026, according to the federal docket materials reviewed for this report. On April 24, 2026, the court approved an extension giving Apple until May 11, 2026, to respond.
Accordingly, the case remains an ongoing proposed class action. The reviewed docket materials do not establish a final judgment, class certification, settlement, trial verdict, recall, or consumer payout program. A motion surviving in part does not mean that a class has been certified or that Apple has lost the case.
Does this prove Apple Watch bands are dangerous?
No. The evidence currently described supports a narrower conclusion:
- A peer-reviewed study found PFHxA in some fluoroelastomer watch bands from a 22-band sample.
- The plaintiffs allege that certain Apple Watch bands contain elevated PFHxA and that Apple did not adequately disclose it.
- The plaintiffs allege a separate laboratory result for one black Apple Watch Sport Band.
- The court found that several legal theories were sufficiently pleaded to continue, while rejecting or dismissing other theories at that stage.
- No reviewed source establishes the amount of PFHxA absorbed by a person wearing a particular Apple band or proves that the band caused a specific health condition.
PFAS is a large family of manufactured chemicals, and the properties and health evidence differ among individual compounds. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says many PFAS break down slowly and may accumulate in people, animals, and the environment, while also noting that health effects vary across the family and that research into low-level, long-term exposure remains ongoing.
The EPA’s toxicological review of PFHxA and related salts recognizes inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact with PFHxA-containing products as possible exposure routes. A possible exposure route is not proof that a particular product creates a harmful exposure under ordinary conditions. It is also not evidence that a wearer has suffered a PFAS-related illness.

For that reason, claims such as “Apple Watch bands cause cancer” go beyond the evidence described in the lawsuit and study. The responsible wording is that PFHxA was detected in some tested fluoroelastomer bands and that plaintiffs allege an undisclosed risk in certain Apple bands.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should Apple Watch owners do?
There is no verified recall or court-ordered replacement program identified in the materials reviewed here. Owners do not have a confirmed legal requirement to stop using an Apple Watch band. A practical response depends on your level of concern, your skin sensitivity, and whether you are comfortable waiting for more testing or litigation developments.

If you want to take a precautionary approach
- Stop wearing the fluoroelastomer band and use a compatible band made from a different stated material.
- Keep the original band and its purchase information if you may later need to identify the model, color, size, seller, and approximate manufacturing date.
- Ask the manufacturer or seller for product-specific material information and testing documentation rather than relying only on general marketing language.
- If you experience a rash or persistent skin irritation, stop using the band and seek appropriate medical advice. Skin irritation alone does not establish PFAS exposure or a PFAS-related illness.
If you decide to compare alternatives, an Apple Watch replacement bands checklist should record the band’s exact material, Apple Watch compatibility, size, seller disclosure, and any available product-specific testing. The lawsuit does not justify labeling a particular replacement band “safe” or “PFAS-free” without evidence for that product.
How to evaluate a replacement band
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact material and construction | “Silicone,” “nylon,” “woven,” “leather,” and “metal” are useful descriptors, but they are not automatic proof that a finished product contains no PFAS. |
| Product-specific disclosure | A broad company statement may not cover every model, coating, adhesive, buckle, color, or production run. |
| Testing report, if claimed | Look for the tested model and batch, the PFAS analyte panel, detection limits, sample preparation, laboratory identity, and test date. |
| Compatibility and fit | Confirm the Apple Watch case size and connector compatibility independently of the chemical disclosure. |
| Marketing language | “Non-toxic,” “eco-friendly,” or “chemical-free” is not a substitute for a clear material statement or substantiated testing. |
The study’s tested silicone samples showed little or no detectable PFAS, according to the research summary, but that result cannot be generalized to every silicone band or manufacturer. A different material may be a reasonable personal alternative to fluoroelastomer, but no material label alone proves that a band is PFAS-free.
What happens next?
The next major step identified in the reviewed docket materials was Apple’s response to the second amended complaint, due May 11, 2026. The case may involve further motions, discovery, disputes over testing and product scope, and arguments about whether the claims can proceed on a class-wide basis.
Readers should be cautious with online posts claiming that a settlement, claim form, recall, or automatic refund is available. Nothing in the reviewed materials verifies such a program. A genuine class settlement or claims process would ordinarily be accompanied by court-authorized notice and instructions identifying the case, class definition, deadlines, and administrator.

The Apple Watch band litigation is based on a real scientific question—whether PFAS such as PFHxA can be present on fluoroelastomer watch bands and what exposure, if any, results from wearing them. It is not yet a final finding that Apple sold dangerous bands or harmed users. The academic research involved only 22 bands, the plaintiffs’ Apple-specific testing is an allegation described in a pleading, and the court’s March 2026 decision addressed legal sufficiency rather than liability. Owners who are concerned can choose a different band, but should evaluate alternatives product by product and avoid unsupported “PFAS-free” promises.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this lawsuit prove that Apple Watch bands are dangerous?
No. The lawsuit and the March 16, 2026 order do not establish that every Apple Watch band is dangerous. A study found PFHxA in some fluoroelastomer bands, and plaintiffs allege a separate positive test involving one black Apple Watch Sport Band. The amount absorbed by a wearer and any resulting health risk remain unproven.
Which Apple Watch bands are named in the lawsuit?
The litigation identifies the Apple Watch Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, and Ocean Band because Apple describes them as using fluoroelastomer. It does not establish that every size, color, production year, or Apple Watch band model has the same chemical composition.
Has Apple recalled the affected Watch bands?
No verified recall is identified in the materials reviewed for this report. The case is an ongoing proposed class action, not a recall announcement or court-ordered replacement program.
Can Apple Watch owners currently file a lawsuit claim or receive a payout?
Not based on the docket information reviewed here. There is no verified settlement, certified class, claim form, or payout program identified. The March 16, 2026 ruling allowed some claims to proceed but was not a final judgment.
Is a silicone or nylon replacement band definitely PFAS-free?
Not automatically. The study found little or no detectable PFAS in the silicone samples it tested, but that result cannot be generalized to every silicone product. Material labels such as silicone, nylon, woven, leather, or metal are not by themselves proof that a finished band contains no PFAS.
How should I choose a replacement Apple Watch band?
Check the exact material, compatibility, size, seller disclosure, and any product-specific laboratory report. A useful report should identify the tested model or batch, analytes, detection limits, sample preparation, laboratory, and test date. Avoid treating general terms such as “eco-friendly” or “chemical-free” as testing evidence.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple faces an ongoing proposed class action over allegations that PFAS, particularly PFHxA, appear in some fluoroelastomer Apple Watch bands. The case has not established a recall, consumer payout, unlawful conduct, or a proven health injury. A replacement band may be a reasonable precaution, but no alternative should be called PFAS-free without product-specific evidence.
