Apple agreed to a $20 million settlement resolving claims about alleged battery-swelling problems in certain early Apple Watch models. A federal court gave the settlement final approval in 2025. The class covered only eligible U.S. residents whose qualifying reports appeared in Apple’s records—not every owner of an included watch—and the settlement did not establish Apple’s liability.
What the Apple Watch battery swelling case alleged
Plaintiffs alleged that battery swelling in First Generation, Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 Apple Watches could cause the display to detach, crack or shatter, potentially creating a risk of cuts or other injury. The official settlement FAQ describes the case as involving issues “allegedly related to battery swell” and claims including alleged consumer-protection violations and breach of warranty: official settlement FAQ.
Those were allegations resolved through a settlement, not findings that the problem occurred in every covered watch or that Apple was legally responsible. The final approval order says the court found the settlement fair, adequate and reasonable; it does not make the alleged defect a proven fact. Read the court’s final approval order for the terms the court approved.
Which Apple Watch models were included?
- First Generation
- Apple Watch Series 1
- Apple Watch Series 2
- Apple Watch Series 3
Series 4 and later were not part of this settlement class. The preliminary approval order explains that plaintiffs narrowed the proposed class to the original watch and Series 1–3 after discovery; owners of later models were outside this class and did not release claims through this settlement. Who qualified for the settlement?
The class definition required all of the following:
- You were a natural person residing in the United States.
- You owned a First Generation, Series 1, Series 2 or Series 3 Apple Watch for personal or household use.
- Your report of an issue potentially related to battery swelling appeared in Apple’s records during the period from April 24, 2015 through February 6, 2024.
Owning one of the listed models by itself was not enough. The Apple-recorded report requirement was part of the class definition, as stated in the settlement FAQ and final approval order.

How much was the settlement payment?
The court described a payment of $20 per covered device, subject to a pro-rata reduction below $20 if the fund balance required it. Payments could increase to as much as $50 per device if more than $50,000 remained after allocated costs. These were settlement terms, not a guarantee that every class member received a particular amount.
Plaintiffs estimated approximately $25 per covered device, according to the court order. That estimate is not a guaranteed payment or a confirmed final average distribution.

Was the $20 million paid directly to watch owners?
No. The $20 million was the gross, non-reversionary settlement fund, which also covered court-approved attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses, administration costs and incentive awards. The court approved $5 million in attorneys’ fees, $433,417.83 in litigation expenses and $27,000 in total incentive awards. Those amounts help explain why the headline fund should not be read as $20 million divided among owners.
The preliminary approval order also discussed plaintiffs’ damages analyses that included a $79 service-cost figure and a $156 per-unit impairment figure. Those were case-related analyses, not a general repair quote or an established loss for every owner.

Did eligible owners need to file a claim?
The final order said class members could receive payment without filing a claim if the settlement administrator had valid, current payment information confirmed. The official settlement information instructed eligible people to confirm or update their payment information. The settlement documents establish those procedures, but they do not establish whether a particular person has been paid or whether administrator support remains active today.
What did final approval mean for class members?
The court held the final fairness hearing on April 10, 2025, and granted final approval. The case began in December 2021; the parties mediated in November 2023, and the court granted preliminary approval on October 25, 2024.
