For Apple’s 2024 lineup, choose Series 10 for a larger, thinner everyday display; Ultra 2 for rugged sports use and Apple’s longer battery-life claims; or SE 2 if a simpler Apple Watch meets your needs. The prices below are historical U.S. launch prices, not current offers, and Apple’s comparison page now includes newer generations.
Which Apple Watch should you buy?
| Model | Best suited to | What stands out | 2024 U.S. launch price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 10 | Everyday use with a display-focused design | 42 mm or 46 mm case; larger active display; sleep apnea notifications; faster charging; depth and water-temperature sensing | $399 starting price, according to Apple’s September 2024 announcement. Apple, 2024 |
| Apple Watch Ultra 2 | Rugged sports and outdoor use | 100-meter water-resistance rating; up to 36 hours of regular-use battery life and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, per Apple | $799 starting price, according to Apple’s September 2024 announcement. Apple, 2024 |
| Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) | A simpler, lower-cost Apple Watch, if its features meet your needs | Apple’s current comparison page identifies it as an earlier model. The 2024 Series 10 announcement gave a $249 starting price for the SE family, not an SE 2-specific current price. Apple comparison page | SE 2-specific launch price: not stated in the cited 2024 announcement. |

How do Series 10 and Ultra 2 differ?
Display and everyday wear
Series 10 came in 42 mm and 46 mm aluminum or titanium cases. Apple described it as nearly 10 percent thinner than Series 7, 8 and 9. Apple also said its display offered up to 30 percent more active screen area than Series 4–6 and up to 9 percent more than Series 7–9; its wide-angle OLED was up to 40 percent brighter than Series 9 when viewed at an angle. These are Apple’s comparisons, with “up to” applying to the stated gains. Apple, September 2024
Ultra 2 is the choice in this comparison for a more rugged sports-oriented design. In September 2024 Apple added a black titanium finish to the existing model and described its display as bright and its GPS as the most accurate in an Apple sports watch. Those are Apple’s product claims, not independent comparative test results. Apple, September 2024

Battery life and charging
Apple lists Series 10 for up to 18 hours of regular use and Ultra 2 for up to 36 hours; Ultra 2 is listed for up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple’s 2024 Series 10 announcement says it can charge to 80 percent in about 30 minutes and provide up to eight hours of normal daily use after 15 minutes of charging. These are manufacturer estimates under Apple’s test procedures, not independent measurements; actual battery life varies with use, configuration, network and other conditions. Health features
Apple introduced sleep apnea notifications on Series 10 in 2024. Apple’s comparison-page footnote says ECG is available on Series 4 and later except SE models, and on all Ultra models; it can generate an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram and is intended for people aged 22 and older. A notification or ECG feature is not a diagnosis and does not replace medical care. Feature availability and eligibility may depend on region, age, device and software. Which model fits swimming and outdoor use?
Water-resistance ratings do not mean that every watch is suitable for every water sport. Apple states that Series 2 and later, and SE and later, are rated to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010 and suitable for shallow-water activities such as swimming. Apple says Series 10 and later can also be used for snorkeling to 6 meters, but should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing or other high-velocity water sports. Ultra models are rated to 100 meters. Series 10 adds a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. Check Apple’s guidance for the activity rather than treating a rating as blanket approval for diving. Is Apple Watch SE 2 enough?
SE 2 is the simpler choice if you want an Apple Watch and do not need the particular features that distinguish Series 10 or Ultra 2. In particular, Apple’s comparison footnote excludes SE models from ECG availability. Compare the features you personally require against Apple’s model-specific specifications before choosing: the 2024 $249 figure was for the SE family and does not establish a current SE 2 price. Will your existing band fit Series 10?
Apple says older 41 mm bands are compatible with the 42 mm Series 10 case, and older 45 mm bands with the 46 mm case. Apple also says new 42 mm and 46 mm bands are compatible with older Apple Watch models. Check the individual band’s fit details before buying; case-size compatibility does not by itself establish fit for every band. Apple, September 2024
