Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“Not in sync” can describe several different Apple Watch problems: a broken connection, delayed Health or Activity data, one stale app, or an incomplete transfer to a new iPhone. Start with the low-risk connection checks below, then follow the section matching your symptom. Do not erase or unpair the watch until you have checked your backups if Health or Activity data is missing.
First, identify what is not syncing
- Red iPhone or red X icon: the watch is not currently connected to the iPhone.
- Notifications, calls, or messages missing: this may be a connection, Focus, or notification-settings problem.
- Health or Activity is stale: the watch may still be recording data locally while the iPhone has not imported or displayed it.
- Only Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Mail, or one third-party app is stale: the underlying pairing may still be working.
- The problem started after changing iPhones: the transfer or pairing process may not have finished.
Apple Watch communication is not controlled by Wi‑Fi alone. When the iPhone is nearby, the paired wireless connection is important; Wi‑Fi or cellular can provide independent connectivity for some features, but they do not guarantee that every app or data category updates immediately. Apple also advises keeping the devices close during setup and synchronization.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo these low-risk fixes first
- Bring the devices close together. Keep the watch unlocked and near the paired iPhone, especially during pairing, migration, updates, or restoration.
- Check wireless settings. On the iPhone, open Control Center and make sure Airplane Mode is off and Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are on. On the watch, press the side button to open Control Center and make sure Airplane Mode is off.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone and Apple Watch, keep them nearby for several minutes, and test the exact feature that failed.
- Install available updates. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. For the watch, open the Watch app and go to My Watch > General > Software Update.
A green iPhone icon in Apple Watch Control Center indicates that the watch has reconnected. If the red icon remains after these steps, Apple’s next major software remedy is to unpair and pair the watch again—but check your data preservation options first.

If Health or Activity is not syncing
Before erasing the watch, distinguish between data being recorded and data being shown on the iPhone. Keep both devices nearby and confirm that they use the intended Apple Account.
Check iCloud Health
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap your name, then iCloud.
- Tap See All or Saved to iCloud, depending on the current interface.
- Make sure Health is enabled.
Apple says Health and Activity data can be kept current across devices signed in to the same Apple Account when iCloud Health is enabled. After migration or restoration, some information may take time to appear, and Apple notes that some data can take days to populate.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume unpairing recovers every recent record. Activity, workouts, or settings changed after the latest backup may be lost. If you back up the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC, the backup must be encrypted to preserve Health and Activity content.

If only one app or data type is stale
Do not unpair immediately when the basic connection works.
- Contacts or Calendar: verify the relevant account on the iPhone and check the affected app’s settings in the Watch app.
- Messages or calls: verify the connection, Focus modes, notification permissions, and whether the iPhone is reachable.
- Reminders or Mail: check the account and permissions on the iPhone, then restart both devices.
- Third-party apps such as Strava, Spotify, Google Calendar, or Outlook: confirm that the iPhone app is installed, signed in, allowed to refresh, and compatible with the current iOS and watchOS versions. These steps vary by app.
About Reset Sync Data
Some older or version-specific Apple Watch troubleshooting instructions show Watch app > My Watch > General > Reset > Reset Sync Data. The control may not appear on every current iOS or watchOS version, and Apple’s current general connection article does not list it as a universal fix.
If the option is available, it may be worth trying for a limited built-in data-sync problem. Do not expect it to repair Health, Activity, third-party apps, or a broken pairing relationship. Apple Community documentation references the version-dependent control.

If the problem began after getting a new iPhone
Prioritize migration troubleshooting rather than treating the issue as an ordinary Bluetooth failure.
Before transferring
- Have the Apple Account credentials and Apple Watch passcode available.
- Connect both iPhones to Wi‑Fi.
- Charge the Apple Watch and new iPhone to at least 50%.
- Update the iPhone and Apple Watch as far as their compatibility allows.
- Enable iCloud Health, or create an encrypted computer backup.
Finish an incomplete transfer
- Back up the old iPhone and set up the new iPhone from the latest backup.
- Keep the watch unlocked, on your wrist, and close to the new iPhone.
- Open the Watch app.
- Go to My Watch > All Watches, select the affected watch, and tap Finish Pairing if that option appears.
If the old iPhone is unavailable, Apple’s recovery path is to erase the watch, pair it with the new iPhone, and restore the most recent watch backup when offered. Recent Activity or workout changes not included in that backup may be lost.
If pairing is stuck on the Apple logo, hold the Digital Crown and side button simultaneously until the watch restarts. Release them, firmly press the screen or hold the Digital Crown, tap Reset, and pair the watch again.

Unpair and pair the Apple Watch again
Use this as the final major consumer software remedy after checking backups and trying the steps above. Unpairing erases the watch and, when performed from the paired iPhone, creates a backup before erasing it.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the information button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch and follow the prompts.
- Pair it again and restore from the available backup when prompted.
Unpairing from the paired iPhone also removes Activation Lock, which is important if the watch is being sold or given away.
Erasing directly on the watch is different
On the watch, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This erases the watch but does not necessarily remove Activation Lock in the same way as unpairing from the paired iPhone. If the iPhone is unavailable, you may need the Apple Account and password originally used to set up the watch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a cellular model, review the cellular-plan choice before erasing. Keeping the plan is generally appropriate when pairing the watch again with the same iPhone; removing it may be appropriate when moving to another iPhone or canceling service. Carrier rules can affect the result.

Check compatibility before upgrading
Not every Apple Watch works with every current iPhone. Compatibility depends on the watch model, iPhone model, and operating-system versions. For example, Apple’s watchOS 26-era guide says Apple Watch SE, Series 6, Ultra, or later requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Older watches have different requirements.
Verify the exact model and software versions in Apple’s current setup and compatibility documentation before buying or upgrading a device.

Contact Apple Support or arrange service if the watch repeatedly disconnects after re-pairing, cannot power on or update, has physical or liquid damage, or still cannot transfer data after you have verified the Apple Account, iCloud Health, and backup status. If important Health or Activity records remain missing, avoid repeated erases until Apple has reviewed the available backup and account data.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Erasing the watch before checking iCloud Health or backup status.
- Assuming an unencrypted computer backup preserves all Health and Activity data.
- Treating one missing notification as proof that pairing is broken.
- Checking Wi‑Fi while Bluetooth or Airplane Mode is the actual problem.
- Unpairing when only one third-party app is failing.
- Assuming a cellular watch mirrors every iPhone feature when the iPhone is out of range.
- Assuming a direct factory erase removes Activation Lock.
The Bottom Line
Classify the symptom first: red connection icon means connection troubleshooting; stale Health or Activity data requires iCloud and backup checks; one stale app needs app-specific diagnosis; and a new-iPhone problem needs migration recovery. Restart and update both devices before unpairing, and protect Health and Activity data before any erase.
