According to reports, the company is developing three AI-focused wearables: smart glasses, a small camera-and-microphone pendant, and AirPods with visual sensors. The projects appear intended to give Siri and Apple Intelligence more context about what users see and hear.
The most recent reporting points to a possible late-2027 target for the glasses, not a confirmed release date. The pendant and camera-equipped AirPods have even less certain specifications and timelines.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on February 17, 2026, that Apple had accelerated work on all three categories. Bloomberg’s report described them as part of a broader effort to make Siri more aware of the user’s physical surroundings.
Apple’s reported smart glasses
The glasses are the clearest and apparently most advanced of the three projects. Reports describe a product closer to Meta’s camera-equipped smart glasses than to Apple Vision Pro: ordinary-looking eyewear with cameras, microphones, speakers, iPhone connectivity and AI features.

- 【Photochromic Lenses, Suitable for Any Scenes】Designed for all-day comfortable wear, AI glasses feature an ultra-lightweight frame and integrated photochromic lenses. The lenses automatically darken in sunlight for UV protection and return to a clear state indoors. A built-in 290mAh battery delivers long-lasting power for full-day use, fitting perfectly with all scenes of daily life, work and outdoor adventures.
Possible functions include identifying objects, interpreting scenes, translating text, answering questions about what the wearer sees, playing audio, handling calls and surfacing notifications. These capabilities remain reported possibilities, not confirmed specifications.
Later reporting said Apple was testing at least four frame styles, including conventional rectangular, oval and circular designs. That suggests the company may be treating the product as everyday eyewear rather than as a specialist headset. TechCrunch reported on the multiple designs.
They may not be AR glasses at first
The most important distinction is that the first version reportedly will not have a display embedded in the lenses. That would make it a camera-and-audio smart-glasses product, not a full augmented-reality system.

Users might hear answers through built-in speakers or look at an iPhone for visual results. This would be less immersive than Vision Pro or future display-based AR glasses, but it could also make the product lighter, less expensive and more suitable for daily wear. A true augmented-reality model is reportedly several years farther away. MacRumors covered the reported distinction and schedule.
What the pendant might be
The pendant is the least clearly documented product. Reports describe a small wearable, possibly comparable in size to an AirTag, with a camera and microphone. It could connect to an iPhone and provide Siri or Apple Intelligence with visual context without requiring glasses or earbuds.
“Apple AI Pin” should not be treated as an official name. Apple has not confirmed the product’s name, design, price, launch date or even whether the final device will be a pendant, pin or another form of accessory.
A pendant could appeal to people who do not wear glasses or earbuds. It might also be easier to remove or disable. However, it would introduce another device to carry and charge while overlapping with functions already offered by an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. A chest- or neck-mounted camera would create privacy questions of its own.

MacRumors reported that the pendant project remained active, but the available details are substantially thinner than those surrounding the glasses.
Why would AirPods need cameras?
Apple has reportedly explored adding cameras or infrared sensors to AirPods. The goal may not be ordinary photography. Lower-resolution cameras or infrared sensors could instead help the earbuds understand nearby objects, movement or surroundings and pass that information to Siri.
A user might ask what is in front of them, request an explanation of a sign, or receive audio guidance without taking out an iPhone. The phone would likely remain important for connectivity, account services and possibly much of the processing.
The sensor configuration is unknown. So are the final design, battery capacity, price and product name. Reports have speculated about an “AirPods Ultra” tier, but that branding is not confirmed.

The earbuds might need longer stems or a bulkier design, camera use could reduce battery life, and users might need to wear both earbuds for the intended experience. Cameras positioned near someone’s face could also be more uncomfortable for bystanders than cameras on conventional glasses.
The common idea: giving Siri eyes and ears
These are not necessarily three unrelated products. The reported strategy is to distribute sensors around the user so Apple’s assistant can understand physical context.
That could connect with Apple’s Visual Intelligence direction, in which software interprets objects, text and scenes around the user. MacRumors reported that Visual Intelligence could become central to Apple’s wearable plans.

In practice, the iPhone may remain the central computer while the wearable supplies a convenient camera, microphone or audio interface. This is different from replacing the phone with an independent AI computer. Current reporting instead points toward close iPhone integration.

The usefulness of the products will depend on more than hardware. Siri must reliably understand visual questions, respond with low latency and take correct actions. Connectivity, cloud versus on-device processing, battery life, privacy controls and the accuracy of Apple Intelligence will all matter.
The launch timeline has already moved
Earlier reports suggested that Apple’s glasses might be unveiled in late 2026, enter production around that period or become available in early 2027. Later reporting in May 2026 moved the expected target to late 2027.
That change is important. It means a 2026 prototype appearance, internal testing report or announcement would not necessarily indicate a 2026 retail launch. A target can change again, and Apple could delay, redesign or cancel any of these projects.
The glasses have reportedly been associated with the internal code name N50, but that is not a consumer product name. The release timing for the pendant and camera AirPods is even less certain. 9to5Mac also reported the later glasses schedule.
How they would compare with Apple’s current products
Vision Pro
Apple Vision Pro is a display-based spatial-computing headset with cameras, visionOS and immersive virtual screens. The rumored glasses would be designed for ordinary daily wear, probably with audio and cameras but no in-lens display in the first generation.
They should not be viewed as a smaller Vision Pro. Vision Pro offers an immersive visual interface; the reported glasses would be more discreet and portable but would provide a much narrower experience if they lack a display. Apple’s current Vision Pro buying page also emphasizes specialist demonstrations and ZEISS optical inserts, reinforcing that it is a different category.

Current AirPods
Apple already sells AirPods Pro 3, listed at $249 on the U.S. store page used for this report. They are an immediately available choice for iPhone users seeking wireless audio and Siri interaction, but they do not provide the rumored visual-awareness functions.
Readers specifically interested in scene recognition or a wearable camera would be considering a different, unannounced product rather than an existing AirPods feature. The current product page is Apple’s official AirPods Pro 3 store page.
Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses
Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses are the closest existing comparison: camera-equipped everyday glasses with microphones, speakers, photography and video features, and AI functions. They are available now through Meta and Ray-Ban.
That comparison explains why Apple’s first glasses are expected to be camera-and-audio glasses rather than AR glasses. It does not confirm Apple’s final design, feature set or competitive positioning.

Privacy and recording
Any camera on glasses, AirPods or a pendant will need clear recording indicators, permissions and controls. Readers will want to know whether cameras can be disabled, how bystanders can tell when recording is active, how long data is retained and whether visual information is processed on the device, on an iPhone or in the cloud.
Workplaces, schools, hospitals and private venues may impose their own restrictions. Apple has not published the controls or policies for these unannounced products, so no specific privacy feature should be assumed.

Continuous sensing, wireless communication and AI processing all consume power. Glasses must remain comfortable, AirPods have limited space for batteries, and a pendant would need to be small enough to wear. The more often cameras operate, the more significant these constraints become.

The value of a display-free experience
Without a lens display, the glasses may be lighter and less distracting, but users will often receive answers through audio or have to consult an iPhone. That could be sufficient for translation, identification and short questions, but it would not offer the persistent overlays associated with full AR.
Will all three launch?
No. Development reports do not establish that Apple will release every project. The products may be delayed, combined, redesigned or canceled. They may also target different customers: glasses for the broadest visual field, AirPods for existing earbud users and a pendant for people who want a body-worn camera without either.
What this means for buyers now
There is no Apple product to preorder, reserve or buy under these reports. Any website claiming to sell the rumored glasses, pendant or camera-equipped AirPods should be treated as unofficial or potentially misleading.
- Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you want an Apple wearable for audio and current Siri-related functions now.
- Choose Vision Pro if you specifically want Apple’s existing immersive spatial-computing platform.
- Consider Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses if you want to try camera-and-audio smart glasses before Apple’s reported product arrives.
Do not buy based on rumored Apple prices, supposed preorder dates or speculative names such as “AirPods Ultra.”
Bottom line
Apple is reportedly pursuing an AI-wearable ecosystem built around cameras, microphones, audio and a more context-aware Siri. The glasses appear to be the leading project, with later reports pointing to a possible late-2027 target and no in-lens display at launch. The pendant and camera-equipped AirPods remain much less defined.
The defensible conclusion is limited but meaningful: these are reported internal development projects, not announced Apple products. Their eventual usefulness will depend on Siri’s reliability, iPhone integration, battery life and privacy design as much as on the hardware itself.
