In 2026, though, it is no longer the default cheap Apple Watch: the SE 3 adds an always-on display, faster charging and newer hardware. The SE 2 is worth considering mainly as a substantially discounted or refurbished watch for basic Apple Watch features.
What made the Apple Watch SE 2 a strong budget upgrade?
Compared with the first-generation SE, the 2022 SE 2 brought Apple’s S8 SiP, Crash Detection and improved motion-sensing capabilities to the lower-cost line. It kept the familiar Apple Watch experience: notifications, calls and messages, Apple Pay, Siri, third-party apps, GPS workout tracking and safety features including Fall Detection and Emergency SOS.
Apple’s specifications list 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases, 32GB of storage, GPS or GPS + Cellular configurations, and 50-meter water resistance. The watch also supports sleep-stage tracking, heart-rate notifications and irregular-rhythm notifications. Those capabilities made it a practical first Apple Watch for an iPhone owner who did not need the flagship models’ advanced sensors. Apple’s SE 2 specifications detail the hardware and features.
That value was about access to Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem, not matching a flagship feature for feature. A contemporaneous Wareable review highlighted its suitability for first-time buyers and Family Setup, while calling out the aging design and lack of an always-on screen.

What is the everyday trade-off?
The screen turns off
The SE 2 has no always-on display. To see the time or workout metrics, you need to raise your wrist or tap the screen. That affects routine glances, not just the spec sheet: the watch cannot show information continuously while your arm is still. It is one of the most noticeable differences from newer models.
Core smartwatch functions are the strength
For an iPhone owner, the SE 2 brings Apple notifications, communications, Apple Pay, apps, Siri and workout tracking in one device. It is a better fit for general smartwatch use than for someone whose first priority is specialized training analysis or multi-day battery life.
Health and safety features have limits
The SE 2 can provide heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, plus Fall Detection and Crash Detection. These are health notifications and safety tools, not a diagnosis or a substitute for professional medical care. Irregular-rhythm notifications are not an ECG: the SE 2 has no ECG app, blood-oxygen measurement hardware or wrist-temperature sensor. Feature availability can also depend on country, language, age, setup and software.

Where the SE 2 cuts corners
- No always-on display: the screen wakes when you raise your wrist or tap it.
- No ECG or wrist-temperature sensing: buyers seeking those measurements need a different model.
- No fast charging: Apple lists about 1.5 hours to reach 80 percent under its test conditions.
- Daily charging: Apple rates the battery for up to 18 hours under a defined test involving time checks, notifications, app use and a workout. Actual endurance varies with cellular and GPS use, signal, settings and battery age.
- Older design and display: the Retina LTPO OLED display uses Ion-X glass and reaches up to 1,000 nits.
- iPhone-only compatibility: Apple lists an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later as the minimum for the SE 2.
For sleep tracking, the battery rating means charging needs planning: charge before bed or after waking, rather than assuming the watch will comfortably cover a full day and night. A used unit’s battery may be further diminished by age.
The 50-meter water-resistance rating is intended for shallow-water activities such as swimming. It does not make the watch suitable for scuba diving, waterskiing or high-velocity water activities. Water resistance can also be affected by wear or damage. Apple’s specifications and usage notes set out the limits.
SE 2 versus SE 3: what changed?
Apple announced the SE 3 on September 9, 2025, with availability starting September 19. It keeps the same nominal battery rating as the SE 2 but adds an always-on display, S10 chip, fast charging, 5G in supported markets and newer health features. Apple says the SE 3 glass is four times more crack-resistant than the SE 2’s; that is Apple’s comparison, not an independent durability test. The SE 3 is the stronger long-term purchase when the price difference is small, especially if you want to glance at the screen without raising your wrist or track sleep without a long charging break. The SE 2’s case is strongest when a large discount outweighs those compromises and you only need the core Apple Watch experience.
Is the SE 2 worth buying in 2026?
Use the price gap as the first test, then consider condition, software longevity and the features you will actually use. There is no fixed discount threshold that applies to every country or used unit; compare the price of the exact SE 2 configuration and condition with a new SE 3 before buying. A current buying guide from Tom’s Guide positions the SE 3 as the cheap Apple Watch choice for iPhone owners.

- Consider the SE 2 if it is substantially cheaper, the battery is in good condition, and notifications, basic workouts, Apple Pay and safety features meet your needs.
- Choose the SE 3 if prices are close, you plan to keep the watch for years, or you want its always-on display, fast charging and newer sensors.
- Look at a Series model if you specifically need ECG, a more advanced health-sensor suite or other premium display and durability features. Neither SE model has ECG.
- Choose another platform if you use Android, prioritize long battery life, or want sport-focused training tools over Apple’s communications and app ecosystem.
Software support is part of the value calculation. A June 2026 TechRadar report says the SE 2 is excluded from watchOS 27 compatibility. Treat that as third-party reporting rather than an official Apple compatibility statement; check Apple’s current software-support documentation before making a purchase based on a specific future update.

Who is the SE 2 for?
First-time Apple Watch buyers
If you already use an iPhone and mainly want notifications, calls, workouts, Apple Pay and basic health notifications, a discounted SE 2 can deliver the essential Apple Watch experience. It is less compelling if you expect the screen to stay visible or want to avoid daily charging.
Parents considering Family Setup
A GPS + Cellular model may suit a child or family member who does not have their own iPhone, but cellular service requires a supported carrier plan and may add recurring costs. Family Setup does not make every Apple Watch feature available. Check Apple’s Family Setup support information for current requirements and limitations.
Fitness-first buyers
For casual workouts and GPS tracking, the SE 2 is a capable companion. Runners focused on structured training, longer sessions and sport-specific analytics may be better served by a running watch such as the Garmin Forerunner 165, which prioritizes training over the SE 2’s broader smartwatch functions.

Battery-first or cross-platform buyers
The Amazfit Active 2 is a lower-cost alternative with Android and iOS compatibility, onboard GPS, offline maps and longer battery life, according to Tom’s Guide’s comparison. Its smartwatch software and iPhone integration are less refined than Apple Watch. Fitbit devices may also suit buyers seeking simpler cross-platform activity and health tracking, but check the current app experience and whether features you want require a subscription.
Checklist for buying a used or refurbished SE 2
- Check battery condition. Ask for the Battery Health reading and assess whether it can support your expected day. A several-year-old watch may need more frequent charging than a new one.
- Confirm Activation Lock is removed. The seller should unpair the watch and remove it from their Apple Account so you can set it up.
- Inspect the glass, case and buttons. Cracks or other damage can affect usability and undermine water resistance; do not rely on a damaged watch for swimming.
- Verify the configuration. Confirm 40mm or 44mm, GPS or GPS + Cellular, and—if cellular matters—carrier compatibility and service availability in your region.
- Check what is included. Confirm that a compatible charger is included and working; a low price may not include one.
- Get a return option. Prefer a seller with a clear return policy in case setup, battery performance or cellular service does not match the listing.
- Confirm iPhone compatibility. The SE 2 requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later, according to Apple’s current specifications.
Alternatives by priority
| If your priority is… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The current entry-level Apple Watch | Apple Watch SE 3 | Newer hardware, always-on display and fast charging; see Apple’s buying page for current availability. |
| Running and structured training | Garmin Forerunner 165 | More sport-focused tools and workout endurance; less capable as a general-purpose smartwatch. |
| Low price, long battery and phone flexibility | Amazfit Active 2 | Works with Android and iOS, but offers weaker iPhone integration and a less refined smartwatch ecosystem. |
| Advanced Apple health and display features | An Apple Watch Series model | Consider the extra cost only if its additional capabilities matter to you; compare current models on Apple’s comparison page. |
Cellular service is a separate cost, not a free feature of the GPS + Cellular model. Check Apple’s cellular information and a supported carrier’s terms before choosing that configuration.
