Apple’s finished product retained 40mm and 44mm cases, while adding a more important display upgrade: an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED screen.
Here is what the rumor said, what the measurements did—and did not—prove, and what Apple ultimately shipped.
What the Apple Watch SE 3 display rumor said
On April 29, 2025, reports based on display analyst Ross Young’s information said that two Apple Watch SE 3 display panels had entered production. The panels were estimated at approximately 1.6 inches and 1.8 inches diagonally.
Those figures were reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac. They were supply-chain reporting and estimates—not specifications confirmed by Apple.

The report also did not establish the watch’s case dimensions. A display’s diagonal measurement is not interchangeable with Apple’s case-size labels. A 41mm or 45mm watch refers broadly to case height, while 1.6 inches or 1.8 inches refers to the screen’s diagonal. Bezel size, aspect ratio, rounding, and measurement methods can all affect the relationship between those numbers.
Why 41mm and 45mm cases became a possibility
The second-generation Apple Watch SE used the older 40mm and 44mm case family associated with the Series 4, Series 5, and Series 6 design era. Apple’s newer premium watches moved to 41mm and 45mm cases, followed later by 42mm and 46mm options.
That made several interpretations plausible:
- The SE 3 could adopt a newer, slightly larger chassis.
- Apple could keep the 40mm and 44mm cases but reduce the bezels, creating more usable screen area.
- The reported figures could have been rounded or estimated using a different measurement convention.
- Apple could reuse another modern chassis without adopting the same case labels as the current Series models.
Contemporary coverage also discussed the possibility of a design derived from a newer generation of Apple Watch rather than the SE 2’s older housing. But those were inferences. Neither 41mm nor 45mm was an announced SE 3 specification.

What Apple actually changed
The Apple Watch SE 3 comes in familiar 40mm and 44mm case sizes. The 40mm model measures 34 × 40mm and has a 324 × 394-pixel display with a 759mm² display area. The 44mm model measures 38 × 44mm and has a 368 × 448-pixel display with a 977mm² display area.

Both use an Always-On Retina OLED display with LTPO technology, up to 1,000 nits of brightness, and a minimum brightness of 2 nits. Apple rates the display at 326 pixels per inch.
The Always-On feature is the most meaningful confirmed display change. It lets the watch face remain visible at reduced brightness instead of requiring a wrist raise or tap every time you want to check the time or a complication.
The SE 3 also adds the S10 chip, 64GB of storage, fast charging, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, and wrist-temperature sensing. Apple claims up to 18 hours of normal battery life or up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode, with charging to 80% taking approximately 45 minutes.

There is no responsible one-word answer. The rumor’s 1.6-inch and 1.8-inch figures cannot be directly compared with Apple’s official specifications unless the same diagonal measurement method is known. Apple’s product page emphasizes case dimensions, resolution, and display area rather than publishing a matching diagonal figure.
So it would be incorrect to say that Apple confirmed 41mm and 45mm cases, and too strong to say the entire display rumor was false. The reported production information may have reflected real development hardware. However, the final marketed watch kept the 40mm and 44mm case labels.

The safest conclusion is that the rumor pointed toward updated display hardware, but not necessarily a new case-size family. Apple ultimately delivered a clear display-function upgrade—Always-On capability—without presenting the SE 3 as a 41mm/45mm redesign.
What a larger display would mean in everyday use
A modest increase in usable screen area would mainly improve convenience rather than transform the watch. More room can make text, notifications, complications, maps, and workout metrics easier to read at a glance. It can also give watch faces more space for information and may allow smaller bezels if the outside dimensions remain similar.

But a larger panel alone does not guarantee higher brightness, longer battery life, better health sensors, or greater durability. Those depend on the display technology, power management, sensors, materials, and software—not simply the diagonal measurement.
The final SE 3’s Always-On display and 1,000-nit maximum brightness matter more in daily use than an uncertain difference of a few tenths of an inch. The 44mm version provides the larger viewing area, while the 40mm version is generally the more natural choice for smaller wrists. Case size can affect comfort even when the change is not large on paper.

The SE 3 remains Apple’s lower-cost smartwatch rather than a smaller version of the premium Series range. Apple added several capabilities that were missing from earlier SE models while keeping aluminum construction, 40mm and 44mm sizing, and a lower starting price.

At launch, U.S. pricing started at $249 for GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular, although current prices and configurations can change. Apple’s official buying page is the appropriate place to confirm current pricing, connectivity options, band choices, and availability.
The SE 3 is a better fit for buyers who want an Always-On display, current watchOS support, standard fitness and safety tools, and a lower entry price. The Series 11 is the more appropriate direction for buyers who need premium health capabilities, a brighter display, or a larger 42mm/46mm case family. Apple lists the SE 3 at up to 1,000 nits and the Series 11 at up to 2,000 nits.
Should an older Apple Watch SE owner upgrade?
Apple Watch SE 1 owners
The SE 3 is a substantial generation change for an SE 1 owner. The Always-On display, newer S10 chip, additional storage, faster charging, and newer health and sleep features are all relevant upgrades, subject to iPhone compatibility and personal needs.
Apple Watch SE 2 owners
The upgrade is less about a larger case and more about the Always-On display, S10 performance, 64GB storage, faster charging, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, and wrist-temperature sensing. If your SE 2 already meets your needs and you do not care about those features, the case-size change alone is not a reason to upgrade.
Apple Watch Series 7, 8, or 9 owners
The value proposition is less obvious. Those watches may already provide a larger or more modern display and premium health features that the SE 3 does not offer. Moving to the SE 3 could make sense for a lower-cost replacement, but it should not be treated as an automatic display upgrade.

- Choose the size: The 40mm model weighs 26.3g in GPS form; the 44mm model weighs 32.9g. The 44mm screen is easier to read, while the 40mm case may suit smaller wrists better.
- Choose connectivity: GPS models generally rely on a nearby iPhone for calls and messages. GPS + Cellular offers more independence but may require a compatible carrier plan and additional charges.
- Check your iPhone: watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch SE 2 or later and requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.
- Set battery expectations: The SE 3 remains approximately a one-day smartwatch, not a multi-day fitness tracker.
- Check health requirements: The SE 3 does not include the ECG app and does not provide the complete premium health feature set.
- Verify bands: Check band sizing when moving between case generations or buying a replacement band.
Verdict
The April 2025 report was a legitimate rumor about display panels entering production, but its estimated 1.6-inch and 1.8-inch measurements never translated into officially marketed 41mm and 45mm Apple Watch SE 3 cases.
Apple shipped the SE 3 in 40mm and 44mm sizes. The important confirmed display improvement was an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED screen, supported by up to 1,000 nits of brightness, rather than a clearly documented move to larger case dimensions. The rumor was therefore neither a clean success nor a complete miss: it suggested display changes, while the final product delivered those changes within the familiar SE size range.
