The most effective way to use Smart Stack is to treat it as a secondary, context-aware dashboard—not a replacement for your watch face. Put information you need instantly on the watch face, pin the few widgets you check most often, and leave occasional or activity-based content available for Smart Stack to surface when relevant.
The steps below reflect watchOS 26. Labels and available widgets can differ in earlier versions.
What Smart Stack does
Smart Stack is a vertically scrolling collection of widgets that you can access independently of the watch face. It combines information and quick actions from Apple and supported third-party apps, including items such as weather, calendar events, activity, sleep, battery, reminders and Home controls.
It is not simply a static pile of widgets. Apple Watch can use factors such as time, location, activity and routine to influence which unpinned content is most relevant. Apple says some suggestions, including workout-related ones, may take time to become useful as the watch learns your routine. These suggestions use on-device data and trends, according to Apple. Apple’s Smart Stack guide explains the current behavior.

Smart Stack contains several different kinds of content:
- Standard widgets: glanceable information or controls from Apple and supported apps.
- Pinned widgets: widgets you keep in a predictable, user-controlled position.
- Unpinned widgets: content whose prominence and ordering can be influenced by context.
- Live Activities: ongoing events such as workouts, timers and music playback. These appear at the top while active and multiple activities may be available to scroll through.
- Smart Stack hints: in watchOS 26, the watch may give a gentle wrist tap and show a small icon at the bottom of the watch face when it thinks a Smart Stack suggestion is immediately useful.
Music, Workouts and Messages also appear for quick access at the bottom of Smart Stack.
How to open Smart Stack
From any watch face, use one of these methods:
- Turn the Digital Crown upward. This is usually the most reliable method, especially when swiping is awkward.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the display. This is convenient when the watch is awake and you have a free finger.
- Use double tap, where supported and enabled. This can be useful when your other hand is occupied, but it is not available in the same way on every Apple Watch model or configuration.
Scroll to the widget you want and tap it to open its associated app. Press the Digital Crown to return to the watch face. If Smart Stack does not open, first check that the watch is actually displaying a watch face rather than an app, Control Center or another screen.
How to customize Smart Stack
To edit the stack:
- Open Smart Stack.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose the action you need.
- Tap Done when finished.
Add a widget
In the Edit view, tap the add button and select an available widget. Some apps offer more than one widget. The list depends on the apps installed, the watchOS version and whether the app developer provides Apple Watch Smart Stack support.
Remove a widget
Tap the delete control beside the widget you no longer want. Removing a widget does not remove the associated app from your Apple Watch.
Pin a widget
Tap the pin control for a widget that should remain in a predictable position. Pinning is useful for essential information such as your next calendar event or a frequently used Home control.

Reorder pinned widgets
Touch and hold a pinned widget, then drag it to the position you prefer. Put the widget you reach for most near the top.
Configure a widget
Some widgets provide a configuration or expand control. Use it to choose the relevant source, accessory, list, location or data view, then save the change. For example, a configurable Home widget may let you select a particular light, lock, scene or other frequently used accessory.

Pinned versus unpinned widgets
Pinning and automatic ordering serve different purposes:
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Pinned | Information or controls you need in a consistent location | Less room for contextual content to change prominence |
| Unpinned | Occasional, temporary or context-sensitive information | Its position and prominence may change |
A useful compromise is to pin two or three high-value widgets and leave secondary content unpinned. Pinning everything turns Smart Stack into a manually ordered list and reduces the value of its contextual behavior. Pinning also does not prevent Live Activities or other system content from being surfaced separately.
Practical Smart Stack setups
Minimal everyday stack
Pin your calendar or upcoming events, weather, and one health metric such as Activity or sleep. Leave Live Activities and less frequently needed widgets unpinned.

Workday stack
Prioritize Calendar, Reminders, Timer, Weather and Messages. Pin Calendar if appointments are the main reason you check the watch. Keep the watch face reserved for the time and information you need without scrolling.
Fitness stack
Prioritize Activity, workout-related information, heart-rate or recovery information where supported, Weather and Timer. Keep workout suggestions enabled if automatic prompts are helpful. If a suggestion is irrelevant on a particular day, mute that hint for 24 hours rather than rebuilding the entire stack.
Smart-home stack
Use a configurable Home widget when available and select one or two actions you actually use, such as a front-door lock, bedside light or scene. Adding every light and accessory creates unnecessary scrolling and makes the control less useful.
Travel stack
Weather, Calendar, Timer and Reminders are sensible starting points. A travel or event app may also provide a widget or Live Activity, but availability and configuration depend on that app’s developer.

How to use Smart Stack hints
A Smart Stack hint is a suggestion, not a normal notification. In watchOS 26, Apple Watch may tap your wrist and show a small icon at the bottom of the watch face when it believes something in Smart Stack is immediately useful.
Tap the hint to open the suggested Smart Stack content. If it is not useful, swipe down on the hint to mute that specific hint for 24 hours. Workout suggestions may become more relevant only after the watch has had time to learn your routine, and a hint should not be treated as a guaranteed prediction or schedule.

Hints, Live Activities and notifications are separate mechanisms. Changing notification settings will not necessarily stop Smart Stack hints, and a Live Activity may still appear even if a hint has been muted.
How to control Live Activities
If a workout, timer or music session is active, its Live Activity can appear at the top of Smart Stack. By default, Smart Stack may remain open when you lower your wrist while a Live Activity is running. That is useful when you need to monitor an activity, but inconvenient if you want the watch face to reappear normally.
To adjust this behavior:
- Open Settings on Apple Watch.
- Tap Smart Stack.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Adjust the available options.
Use this menu if the watch repeatedly returns to an activity view, a timer or workout takes over the top of Smart Stack, or music controls appear more often than you want. You do not need to turn off Smart Stack itself to control Live Activities.
Smart Stack versus complications and the Dock
| Use | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Information must be visible immediately | Watch-face complication | No gesture or scrolling required |
| Several occasional information sources | Smart Stack | Provides a separate, scrollable dashboard |
| Content should adapt to time, activity or routine | Smart Stack | Unpinned items can be surfaced contextually |
| Launching or returning to apps | Dock | The Dock is designed around recent or favorite apps |
Use complications for facts you check constantly, such as the date, next appointment or a central health metric. Use Smart Stack for information that matters but would overcrowd the watch face, plus occasional actions and context-sensitive content. Use the Dock when your goal is to switch between apps rather than glance at widgets.

Smart Stack will not open
- Confirm the watch is showing a watch face.
- Turn the Digital Crown upward instead of swiping.
- If swiping, start from the very bottom edge of the display.
- Confirm that the watch is running a supported version of watchOS.
- Restart the Apple Watch if the Digital Crown and gestures are not responding normally.
- Make sure you are not confusing Smart Stack with Control Center or the Dock.
A desired widget is missing
The app may not provide an Apple Watch widget, may not be installed or available on the watch, or may not support Smart Stack in your watchOS version. The widget may also already be present lower in the stack or require configuration before it becomes useful. An iPhone widget does not automatically guarantee an Apple Watch Smart Stack widget.
A widget keeps moving or disappearing
It is probably unpinned. Open Smart Stack, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit, and pin it if predictable placement matters more than automatic ordering.

An unwanted activity keeps appearing
Check Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities. Workouts, timers and music are common examples of activities that can be surfaced there. Adjust the relevant options rather than disabling Smart Stack altogether.
A hint is inaccurate
Swipe down on the hint to mute it for 24 hours. For recurring needs, pin the relevant widget so you are not dependent on suggestions. If the suggestion relates to a routine, allow time for the watch to make it more relevant.
Double tap does not work
Use the Digital Crown or the swipe gesture as the primary methods. Double tap is an additional access method where the Apple Watch model and gesture settings support it; it should not be treated as universal.
Older instructions do not match
This guide uses watchOS 26 labels and behavior. Earlier releases may not include Smart Stack hints, the same configurable-widget controls or identical Live Activity behavior. Apple identifies hints and configurable widgets as watchOS 26 additions in its watchOS update documentation.
watchOS 26 compatibility
watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later. Updating requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running iOS 26. Not every watchOS 26 feature is available on every compatible model. See Apple’s watchOS compatibility and update requirements before troubleshooting a missing feature.
Apple’s update documentation reviewed for this guide lists watchOS 26 as published on July 28, 2026. Because labels and feature availability can change between releases, check the version shown in the Watch app before following older instructions.
