The Apple Watch Series 10 rumor was substantially right: Apple announced the watch on September 9, 2024, and released it on September 20 with larger displays and a thinner case. The 2024 model comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, measures 9.7mm thick, and keeps the familiar Apple Watch shape rather than introducing the radical anniversary redesign some reports called “Apple Watch X.”
What changed in the Series 10 design?
Series 10 replaced the previous 41mm and 45mm case sizes with 42mm and 46mm options. Apple lists the cases at 36mm and 39mm wide, respectively, and 9.7mm deep in both sizes. The larger footprint and slimmer bezels help make room for more display area without turning the watch into a wholly different form factor.
Apple described the case as nearly 10 percent thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9. The watch retains the rounded rectangular case, Digital Crown, side button, and interchangeable-band approach. Available finishes include jet black, rose gold, and silver aluminum, plus slate, gold, and natural titanium. Aluminum models use Ion-X front glass; titanium models use sapphire crystal. Apple’s technical specifications detail the dimensions and materials.
How much bigger is the display?
Apple’s stated display figures show the difference between the two Series 10 sizes:

| Case size | Display area | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| 42mm | 989 sq mm | 374 × 446 |
| 46mm | 1,220 sq mm | 416 × 496 |
Apple says the displays offer up to 30 percent more active screen area than Series 4, Series 5, Series 6, and the first-generation SE, or up to 9 percent more than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9. Those are comparisons with specified generations, not a claim that every owner will see the same increase. The Series 10 uses a wide-angle OLED display that Apple says is up to 40 percent brighter when viewed at an angle. It also has an Always-On Retina display with up to 2,000 nits peak brightness. These figures are Apple’s specifications, not a guarantee of identical viewing conditions in every situation.
How did Apple make it thinner?
Apple redesigned the back and integrated the antenna into the metal housing, combining components in a way that reduced thickness. The larger case footprint also gave Apple more space to arrange internal components. The result is a thinner watch, but not a different silhouette or a larger battery rating.

Apple rates Series 10 for up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Actual battery life varies with settings and use. In practical terms, thinness may improve how the watch feels on the wrist, but it does not remove the usual daily charging expectation.
What came with the redesign?
Series 10 added changes beyond the display and case. It uses the S10 SiP, a 64-bit dual-core processor, a four-core Neural Engine, and 64GB of storage. Apple also added sleep-apnea notifications, faster charging, water-depth sensing to 6 meters, water-temperature sensing, and media playback through the built-in speaker.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Charging: Apple says the watch can reach up to 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes. Its stated fast-charge examples include up to 8 hours of normal use from a 15-minute charge, or up to 8 hours of sleep tracking from an 8-minute charge.
- Water and dust: Series 10 is rated water-resistant to 50 meters and carries an IP6X dust-resistance rating. The depth gauge measures to 6 meters; that does not make Series 10 an Ultra-style dive watch.
- Health functions: The specifications include ECG, heart-rate notifications, temperature sensing, cycle tracking, sleep tracking, and sleep-apnea notifications. Availability depends on country or region, regulatory authorization, model, software, and setup. Sleep-apnea notifications are not a diagnosis or a substitute for clinical evaluation.
Apple announced Series 10 at a U.S. starting price of $399. That was its launch price, not a statement of the watch’s current price or availability. Apple’s announcement also says older 41mm and 45mm bands work with the new 42mm and 46mm cases. Apple’s launch announcement lists the announcement, preorder, and release details.
What did the pre-launch reports get right—and wrong?
Before launch, reports predicted a larger display and thinner body, and raised the prospect of a tenth-anniversary model called “Apple Watch X.” Bloomberg’s pre-launch coverage also described uncertainty around the branding and timing of a broader redesign. The display and thickness predictions proved accurate; the product was named Apple Watch Series 10, not Apple Watch X. Bloomberg’s July 2024 report captures that pre-launch uncertainty.

The finished watch was a meaningful refinement, not a complete visual reinvention. It kept the recognizable Apple Watch controls and shape, while adding a larger screen, slimmer case, new finishes, and internal changes. The thin design also did not bring a higher advertised normal-use battery rating.

Owners of Series 4, 5, 6, or first-generation SE
The upgrade case is stronger if a larger display is your priority: Apple’s comparison says these models can see up to 30 percent more active screen area. You may also value the thinner case, faster charging, sleep-apnea notifications where available, and depth and water-temperature sensing.

Owners of Series 7, 8, or 9
The screen-area increase is smaller—up to 9 percent by Apple’s comparison—and Series 10 keeps the same up-to-18-hour normal-use battery rating. Upgrading makes more sense if you specifically want the thinner body, faster charging, or one of the new features; otherwise, a functioning recent model may not feel like a major change.
Buyers choosing among Apple Watch models
- Consider Series 10 if you want a large display in the regular line, a thinner case, fast charging, or its added sensing features.
- Consider an SE model if price matters more than the Series 10 display and advanced health functions. Apple’s 2024 announcement set the SE’s U.S. launch price at $249; that is a historical launch figure, not a current price.
- Consider an Ultra model if rugged construction, outdoor-focused controls, or longer battery life matter more than a thin, light standard watch.
- Check refurbished Series 10 stock if you want this generation at a lower price. Apple’s refurbished configurations can vary; verify the case material, size, GPS or cellular configuration, included band, warranty, battery condition, and return terms before buying.
Series 10 was announced on September 9, 2024, with preorders beginning that day and retail availability starting September 20, 2024. These dates and the $399 U.S. launch price are historical launch details, not current pricing guidance.
Compatibility and availability to check
Apple’s current compatibility page lists iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later, and watchOS 11 or later, as the baseline for Series 10. Apple Watch cannot be paired with Android. Cellular models require compatible carrier service and may involve a separate plan; GPS models can use a paired iPhone and Wi-Fi. Carrier availability, international roaming, and emergency-calling support vary.
Health features are not universal: country or regional rules, regulatory authorization, software, device model, and user setup may affect access. Blood Oxygen functionality in particular has region and model restrictions. Check Apple’s compatibility information and the applicable regional feature details before purchasing.
