The Longines Spirit Zulu Time is an automatic GMT watch collection built around a practical second-time-zone display. The reviewed official models include 39 mm and 42 mm steel versions and a 39 mm titanium version; shared headline specifications include a silicon balance spring, up to 72 hours of power reserve and GMT/date functionality. The right choice depends chiefly on case size, material, dial and bezel design, and the exact strap or bracelet configuration.
What is the Longines Spirit Zulu Time?
Spirit Zulu Time models combine a conventional local-time display with a dedicated GMT hand that can indicate another time zone against a 24-hour scale. Longines positions the collection within its history of watches showing multiple time zones. The brand says its first dual-time-zone wristwatch was made in 1925 and carried a Zulu flag on the dial; it explains “Zulu” as the letter Z used to designate universal time for aviators. This is Longines’ account of the collection’s heritage.
The collection also includes the Spirit Zulu Time 1925 campaign. Longines’ campaign asks, “What time is it there?” and features Henry Cavill. The campaign copy does not establish that Cavill made that statement himself.
How does the GMT display work?
The L844 instruction manual identifies the GMT/24-hour hand, rotating bezel, local hour and minute hands, seconds hand, date, and second-time-zone display. In practical use, the GMT hand and 24-hour scale provide the reference for a second time zone. The manual also describes using the rotating bezel to display a second zone.

The manual says local time can be adjusted in successive whole-hour steps without changing the minutes, seconds, or second-time-zone indication. That is useful when changing time zones: the local hour can be moved while the GMT reference remains in place. For the exact setting sequence, follow the manual for the particular watch and crown configuration.
- Before setting: If the watch has a screw-in crown, unscrew it before winding or adjusting.
- Set the second zone: Use the manual’s instructions to align the GMT hand with the 24-hour bezel scale. The bezel can also be used as described in the manual to display a second zone.
- Adjust local time as needed: Move the local hour in whole-hour increments when changing time zones, preserving the GMT indication.
- Secure the crown: After setting, push in or screw down the crown as applicable.

Longines publishes 25,200 vibrations per hour and up to 72 hours of power reserve for the reviewed specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. At collection level, Longines says the calibres have silicon balance springs, resistance to magnetic fields, and COSC chronometer certification. Those are manufacturer claims; the reviewed sources do not provide independent performance testing.
How to choose between the models
- Case diameter: Compare the 39 mm and 42 mm versions. The specification alone cannot determine how a watch will sit on a particular wrist; the reviewed sources do not establish wrist fit or comfort.
- Material: The examples include stainless steel and titanium. Check the exact reference because case and bracelet materials differ among configurations.
- Dial and bezel: Longines lists multiple dial and strap variations, and the reviewed references include bezel differences. Compare the precise reference rather than assuming every model shares the same finish or setup.
- Strap or bracelet: Confirm what is included with the specific listing. The available sources do not establish generic third-party strap compatibility; check attachment and clasp compatibility for the reference before buying a replacement.
- Price and availability: Use the Longines listing for your region and verify the reference. The cited US price is a dated snapshot for one 42 mm steel model, not a price for the whole collection.
Water resistance, setting and care
The reviewed steel references are listed at 10 bar water resistance. The L844 manual equates 10 bar with 100 m under its stated standard overpressure, but that rating is not a blanket assurance of suitability for every water activity. Water resistance can be affected by dried gaskets or an accidental shock to the crown.
