It is thinner, has a larger and much brighter off-angle display, doubles storage from 32GB to 64GB, charges substantially faster, adds sleep-apnea notifications and shallow-water depth tracking, and has the stronger long-term software outlook.
But Series 8 owners should not upgrade automatically. Both watches still offer an 18-hour normal-use battery rating, ECG, temperature sensing, sleep tracking, fall and crash detection, heart-rate alerts, IP6X dust resistance, and 50-meter water resistance. The Series 10 upgrade is most noticeable in the display, comfort, charging routine, sleep-apnea feature, water sensors, and future watchOS support—not in basic notifications or ordinary heart-rate tracking.
U.S. buying context as of August 10, 2026: Apple no longer sells Series 8 new. Apple’s refurbished store has listed Series 10 configurations such as a 46mm GPS aluminum model at $319, while the current Series 11 starts at $399. Prices and inventory change frequently, so Series 10 only makes sense when the discount from Series 11 is meaningful. Check Apple’s refurbished Series 10 listings and current Series 11 pricing.
Apple Watch Series 10 vs Series 8: the short answer
| Best for | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most new or refurbished buyers | Series 10 | Larger, brighter display; thinner case; faster charging; 64GB; sleep-apnea notifications; water-depth and temperature sensors; longer expected software life. |
| Existing Series 8 owners | Keep Series 8 unless you need specific upgrades | Core health, safety, workout, notification, and Apple Pay features remain broadly similar. |
| Budget buyers | Series 8 only at a substantial discount | It remains capable, but its battery is older and it is absent from Apple’s announced watchOS 27 compatibility list. |
| Buyers comparing Series 10 with a new watch | Consider Series 11 if prices are close | Series 11 starts at $399 in the U.S., making a lightly discounted Series 10 difficult to justify. |
The Series 10 launched in 2024, two years after the Series 8 launched in 2022. The detailed specifications below come from Apple’s Series 10 technical specifications, Series 8 technical specifications, and Apple’s comparison page.
At-a-glance comparison

|---|---|---|---|
| Introduced | 2024 | 2022 | Series 10 has newer hardware and a better future-support position. |
| Case sizes | 42mm, 46mm | 41mm, 45mm | These are new nominal sizes, not direct 1mm-for-1mm case matches. |
| Case thickness | 9.7mm | 10.7mm | Series 10 is about 1mm thinner. |
| Case materials | Aluminum or titanium | Aluminum or stainless steel | Series 10 replaces stainless steel with titanium in the premium models. |

| Maximum brightness | 2,000 nits | 1,000 nits | Series 10 is easier to read in bright conditions and from an angle. |
| Display | LTPO3 OLED, wide-angle OLED, Always-On | LTPO OLED, Always-On | The biggest visible hardware improvement is the Series 10 display. |
| Processor | S10 SiP, dual-core, four-core Neural Engine | S8 SiP, dual-core | Series 10 uses newer hardware, but Apple does not publish a direct speed percentage. |
| Storage | 64GB | 32GB | Series 10 has twice as much room for apps and offline audio. |
| Normal battery rating | Up to 18 hours | Up to 18 hours | There is no headline improvement in rated normal-use runtime. |

| ECG | Yes | Yes | No meaningful advantage for Series 10. |
| Wrist-temperature sensing | Yes | Yes | Both support temperature-based cycle tracking. |
| Depth gauge | Up to 6 meters | No | Useful for snorkeling and shallow-water tracking, not scuba diving. |
| Water-temperature sensor | Yes | No | Useful for water-activity measurements. |
| Water resistance | 50 meters; swimming and Apple-stated snorkeling limits | 50 meters; swimming | Neither watch is a scuba-diving computer. |
| Dust resistance | IP6X | IP6X | No difference. |
| Speaker media playback | Yes | No | Series 10 can play some audio directly through its speaker. |
| Double Tap | Yes | No | Series 10 adds Apple’s two-finger gesture control. |
| Software outlook | Included on Apple’s published watchOS 27 compatibility list | Omitted from that list | Series 10 is the safer long-term purchase. |
The six differences you will actually notice
1. Series 10 has a meaningfully better display
The Series 10 display is larger in both sizes:
- 42mm Series 10: 374 × 446 pixels and 989 sq. mm.
- 41mm Series 8: 352 × 430 pixels and 904 sq. mm.
- 46mm Series 10: 416 × 496 pixels and 1,220 sq. mm.
- 45mm Series 8: 396 × 484 pixels and 1,143 sq. mm.
The numbers understate the practical difference. Series 10 combines thinner bezels, a more edge-to-edge presentation, a wide-angle OLED design, and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits versus 1,000 nits on Series 8. Apple says Series 10 can be up to 40% brighter when viewed at an angle.

That matters when reading notifications, checking workout complications, using the on-screen keyboard, or glancing at the watch while your wrist is not perfectly rotated toward your face. The difference is less important if you mainly use haptic alerts, Siri, or a simple watch face.
Independent testing found the off-angle improvement is real but not always dramatic against the immediately previous Series 9. Against Series 8’s older 1,000-nit display, the advantage should be easier to see. DC Rainmaker’s Series 10 review provides useful real-world display and battery context.
2. Series 10 is thinner and generally more comfortable
Both generations have rounded rectangular cases, but Series 10 is 9.7mm thick compared with 10.7mm for Series 8. That 1mm difference sounds minor, yet it is noticeable when sleeping in the watch, wearing tight sleeves, or resting your wrist on a desk.

The size labels changed as well. Series 10 comes in 42mm and 46mm, while Series 8 comes in 41mm and 45mm. The larger Series 10 display is not simply the result of stretching the Series 8 case by 1mm; it uses a redesigned case and display layout.
| Model | Height × width × depth | Aluminum weight |
|---|---|---|
| Series 10 42mm | 42 × 36 × 9.7mm | 30g GPS; 29.3g GPS + Cellular |
| Series 10 46mm | 46 × 39 × 9.7mm | 36.4g GPS; 35.3g GPS + Cellular |
| Series 8 41mm | 41 × 35 × 10.7mm | 31.9g GPS; 32.2g GPS + Cellular |
| Series 8 45mm | 45 × 38 × 10.7mm | 38.8g GPS; 39.1g GPS + Cellular |
Materials make comparisons more complicated. Series 8 premium models are stainless steel; Series 10 premium models are titanium. Series 10 titanium weighs 34.4g in 42mm and 41.7g in 46mm, while Series 8 stainless steel weighs 42.3g in 41mm and 51.5g in 45mm. That makes titanium dramatically lighter than stainless steel, but it is not a direct aluminum-to-aluminum comparison.
For durability, aluminum versions of both generations use Ion-X front glass. Series 8 stainless-steel models use sapphire crystal, and Series 10 titanium models also use sapphire crystal. Do not assume every Series 10 has sapphire: only the titanium models do.
3. Series 10 charges much faster, but it does not last longer by Apple’s headline rating
Both watches are rated for up to 18 hours of normal use. Series 10 is therefore not a longer-lasting replacement in the simplest battery-life comparison. It is the easier watch to keep charged.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple rates Series 10 for:
- Up to 80% charge in about 30 minutes with Apple’s specified magnetic fast charger and a 20W USB-C power adapter.
- Up to 8 hours of normal use from about 15 minutes of charging.
- Up to 8 hours of sleep tracking from about 8 minutes of charging.
- Up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode.
Series 8 takes about 45 minutes to reach 80% under Apple’s test conditions. In practice, Series 10 is much better suited to a sleep-tracking routine: charge while showering or getting ready, wear it overnight, and top it up again in the morning.
Actual runtime varies with cellular use, GPS workouts, display settings, signal strength, temperature, and battery health. A used Series 8 with a worn battery may last substantially less than its original rating, so battery health is more important than the specification sheet when comparing second-hand examples.
4. Series 10 adds sleep-apnea notifications
Sleep-apnea notifications are one of the largest functional differences between the two watches. Series 10 can look for breathing-disturbance patterns during sleep and notify an eligible wearer when its data suggests possible signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea. Series 8 does not support this feature.
Apple says the feature is intended for people aged 18 or older who do not already have a sleep-apnea diagnosis. Availability also depends on regulatory approval and region. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis and not a substitute for medical evaluation.

If sleep tracking is central to your purchase and you specifically want Apple’s sleep-apnea notification feature, Series 10 is the clear choice. If you only want sleep duration and sleep stages, both watches can provide those basics.
5. Series 10 is better for snorkeling and water data
Both watches are water resistant to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010 and can track swimming. Series 10 adds a depth gauge rated to 6 meters and a water-temperature sensor, along with the Depth app and expanded water-activity support. That makes it the more useful model for snorkeling, shallow-water exploration, and people who want water temperature or depth data.
Neither model should be called waterproof. Water resistance can diminish with age, impact, chemical exposure, soap, or repairs. Apple advises against using them for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other high-velocity water activities. Series 10’s depth gauge does not turn it into a dive computer. See Apple’s water-resistance guidance before using either watch in water.
6. Series 10 has the much better software runway
This is the most important difference for a buyer in 2026. Apple’s latest listed watchOS 26 security release, watchOS 26.6 on July 27, 2026, supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later, so Series 8 remains supported on the current major software generation.
However, Apple’s published watchOS 27 compatibility list includes Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, SE 3, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3—but not Series 8. Apple lists watchOS 27 as coming in fall 2026, so the correct wording is that Series 8 has been omitted from the announced compatibility list, not that it has already stopped receiving updates.
This gives Series 10 a safer outlook for several more years of major watchOS releases, new APIs, apps, Siri capabilities, and resale value. It also reduces the chance that a watch bought cheaply today becomes the next forced upgrade sooner than expected.
For the newest watchOS generation, Apple lists an iPhone 11 or later with the relevant iOS 27 software requirement. At launch, Series 8 required an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16 or later, while Series 10 originally required an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. Always check the current device requirements before buying a used watch for an older iPhone.
What Series 10 and Series 8 have in common
Series 10 is newer, but it is not a complete replacement for every feature in Series 8. Both models still provide:
- ECG through the electrical heart sensor.
- Third-generation optical heart sensing.
- High- and low-heart-rate notifications.
- Irregular-rhythm notifications.
- Wrist-temperature sensing and temperature-based cycle-tracking features.
- Sleep tracking, including sleep stages.
- Fall Detection and Crash Detection.
- Noise monitoring.
- Emergency SOS.
- GPS workout tracking.
- Apple Pay and standard Apple Watch notifications.
- IP6X dust resistance.
- 50-meter water resistance.
- An Apple-rated 18-hour normal-use battery life.
In the United States, ECG and other health features can depend on regulatory authorization, software, age, and region. Cellular calling and data also require the GPS + Cellular model, a supported carrier, and an eligible service plan; cellular availability and roaming vary by country.
Health features: what changed and what did not
Shared health platform
For everyday heart monitoring, Series 8 owners do not lose much by staying put. Both watches can record heart rate, notify you about unusually high or low readings, identify irregular rhythms, take an ECG, track sleep, and use wrist-temperature data for cycle tracking.
These features are wellness and monitoring tools, not a replacement for a clinician. ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, and other features have specific limitations and may not be available in every country.
Series 10-only health and water features
Series 10’s meaningful additions are sleep-apnea notifications, depth measurement to 6 meters, water-temperature measurement, and the related Depth app and water-activity functions. It also has on-device Siri processing and newer software-dependent Siri and health-data capabilities, although availability depends on watchOS, iPhone, language, and region.

Blood Oxygen: the U.S. situation is more complicated than “yes” or “no”
Both generations contain Blood Oxygen hardware, but the experience depends on where and when the watch was purchased.
For qualifying U.S. Apple Watch units purchased on or after January 18, 2024, Apple says the Blood Oxygen analysis is performed on the paired iPhone and results are viewed in the Health app. Apple’s current watchOS documentation says Blood Oxygen data is not available in the Vitals app on those U.S. models. Series 10 U.S. units are particularly likely to fall into this category because Series 10 launched in September 2024.
If Blood Oxygen is important, check the unit’s part number and Apple’s current documentation. A qualifying U.S. unit commonly has a part number ending in LW/A. Do not describe every U.S. Series 10 as simply having “no Blood Oxygen”; the iPhone-based experience and Vitals-app limitation are more precise. Blood Oxygen is a wellness feature, not a medical diagnostic measurement. Apple’s details are in its Blood Oxygen support article and Vitals documentation.
Performance, storage, and connectivity
Series 10 uses Apple’s S10 SiP, a 64-bit dual-core processor, four-core Neural Engine, and 64GB of storage. Series 8 uses the S8 SiP, a 64-bit dual-core processor, and 32GB of storage. Both support Bluetooth 5.3.
Series 10’s extra storage is useful if you keep music, podcasts, apps, or other offline content on the watch. It is less important if the watch is mainly a notification screen and workout tracker.
The S10 is newer and better positioned for future software features, but Apple does not publish a direct S10-versus-S8 speed percentage. It would be misleading to promise a specific performance gain. A healthy Series 8 remains responsive enough for ordinary use; the more visible Series 10 improvements are the display, charging, sensors, and support outlook.
Series 10 includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, while Series 8 includes Apple’s U1 chip. The practical importance depends on which supported iPhone, finding, and location features you use.
Materials, sizes, and display protection
| Series 10 option | Series 8 closest category | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum: Jet Black, Rose Gold, Silver | Aluminum: Midnight, Starlight, Silver, Product Red | Both use Ion-X glass and are the lighter, lower-cost configurations. |
| Titanium: Slate, Gold, Natural | Stainless steel: Graphite, Silver, Gold | Both premium categories use sapphire front crystal, but the materials, finish, weight, and used prices differ. |
Series 10 titanium is lighter than Series 8 stainless steel, but do not use that comparison to claim that every Series 10 is lighter than every Series 8. Size and material determine the result. The aluminum Series 10 is only modestly lighter than comparable aluminum Series 8 models, while its thinner case can make it feel more comfortable than the scale suggests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBand compatibility
Changing from Series 8 to Series 10 usually does not require replacing your bands:
- Bands for 38mm, 40mm, and 41mm cases are mutually compatible.
- Bands for 42mm, 44mm, and 45mm cases are mutually compatible.
- Bands designed for 46mm cases are compatible with 44mm, 45mm, and 46mm cases.
Most 41mm Series 8 bands therefore fit the 42mm Series 10, and most 45mm Series 8 bands fit the 46mm Series 10. Check specialty bands, Solo Loop sizing, and unusually tight lugs before purchasing. Apple’s complete guidance is in its band compatibility article.
Who should upgrade from Series 8 to Series 10?
Upgrade if the display is your daily frustration
The Series 10 is a worthwhile upgrade if you frequently struggle to read a Series 8 outdoors or when looking at it from an angle. The larger display also makes complications, text entry, and apps more comfortable. This is the most universal reason to upgrade.

Upgrade if you track sleep
Series 10’s faster charging makes overnight wear much easier. It is also the only one of the two with sleep-apnea notifications. If you want both sleep tracking and the possibility of apnea-related alerts, Series 10 is the obvious choice.
Upgrade if you snorkel or want water data
Choose Series 10 for the 6-meter depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, and Depth app. For ordinary pool swimming, Series 8 already covers the fundamentals, so the upgrade is unnecessary unless those extra measurements matter to you.
Upgrade if you plan to keep the watch for years
Series 10’s inclusion on the announced watchOS 27 compatibility list makes it the more sensible long-term purchase. The software difference is especially important when buying a watch in 2026 rather than comparing the models at Series 10’s 2024 launch.
Keep Series 8 if your needs are ordinary
Keep a healthy Series 8 if you mainly use notifications, workouts, Apple Pay, sleep tracking, ECG, heart-rate alerts, and safety features. Do not upgrade merely because the S10 label sounds faster; Apple has not published a direct performance comparison, and the day-to-day difference may not justify the cost.
A Series 8 stainless-steel owner may also prefer the existing premium finish and sapphire crystal. Series 10 titanium is lighter, but it has a different appearance and is not necessarily a like-for-like replacement.

Series 8 is still sensible as a used or refurbished purchase only when all of the following are true:
- It costs substantially less than a comparable Series 10.
- Battery health is strong enough for your routine.
- You do not need sleep-apnea notifications, snorkeling depth, or water-temperature data.
- You accept that it is absent from Apple’s announced watchOS 27 compatibility list.
- The seller provides a return window or meaningful warranty.
- Activation Lock has been removed before you pay.
There is no universal fair price because size, material, cellular capability, battery health, condition, and warranty all matter. A used Series 8 should not be priced close to an Apple-certified refurbished Series 10 simply because the Series 8 originally cost $399. Older battery age and shorter major-software runway need to be reflected in the discount.
2026 pricing: Series 10 versus Series 11
U.S. price context checked for August 10, 2026: refurbished and marketplace prices change frequently, and Apple’s refurbished inventory is configuration-dependent.
Series 8 launched at $399 in the United States, and Series 10 also launched at $399. Those are historical launch prices, not current recommendations. Series 8 is now primarily a used-market product.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Apple’s current standard model is Series 11, starting at $399. Apple’s refurbished store has listed a 46mm GPS aluminum Series 10 at $319, although exact configurations and stock change. That $80 difference can make Series 10 attractive, particularly if you want its display, fast charging, sleep-apnea notifications, or water sensors.
As Series 10 pricing approaches $399, the decision changes. Series 11 retains the S10 platform and display family while offering newer-generation support and longer battery life. In that situation, buy Series 11 rather than paying nearly-new-watch money for a previous-generation Series 10.

The Apple Certified Refurbished program is preferable to an unknown marketplace seller when its price and configuration are competitive because warranty coverage and return terms matter. Also consider the less expensive SE 3, which starts at $249 but omits premium features such as ECG and sleep-apnea notifications. Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 are better suited to multi-day battery life, rugged outdoor use, and serious water activities, but they are substantially larger and more expensive.

- Check battery health: On the watch, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health. A low maximum-capacity reading should materially reduce the price.
- Verify Activation Lock: The seller must erase the watch and remove it from their Apple Account. Do not accept a promise that they will do it later.
- Confirm the model: Check 41mm or 45mm, aluminum or stainless steel, and GPS or GPS + Cellular.
- Check cellular compatibility: A cellular watch still needs a supported carrier and service plan. Confirm the model works with your carrier and region.
- Inspect the case and display: Look for cracked glass, deep scratches, bent edges, corrosion, and damaged band slots.
- Be cautious about water: The original 50-meter rating does not guarantee that an older, repaired, or damaged watch remains water resistant.
- Confirm the charger: Make sure a compatible Apple Watch magnetic charging cable is included.
- Require return protection: Battery replacement or repair can cost too much relative to the watch’s used value.
For a refurbished or used Series 10
- Compare against Series 11 first: If Series 10 is close to $399, the newer model may be the better purchase.
- Identify the material: Aluminum uses Ion-X glass; titanium uses sapphire crystal and costs more.
- Confirm the charging cable: Series 10’s fast-charging results require the appropriate magnetic USB-C charging cable and power adapter.
- Check battery health and warranty: Verify remaining warranty coverage and whether AppleCare+ can still be added.
- Check GPS versus Cellular: Cellular models cost more and require carrier support.
- Check Blood Oxygen status: If buying in the U.S. and the feature matters, inspect the part number and determine whether it ends in LW/A. Qualifying units use the iPhone-based Blood Oxygen experience and do not show the data in the watch’s Vitals app.
- Verify Activation Lock and returns: The watch should be ready to pair with your Apple Account and come with a clear return policy.
Apple’s watch identification guide can help verify the model and case details.
Decision guide by buyer type
| If you are… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| An existing Series 8 owner who wants a larger, easier-to-read screen | Series 10 | The display-area and brightness improvements are immediately visible. |
| An existing Series 8 owner satisfied with notifications and workouts | Keep Series 8 | Core functionality remains close, and the upgrade may not repay its cost. |
| A first-time buyer at a reasonable refurbished price | Series 10 | It offers the strongest balance of features and remaining support. |
| A strict budget buyer | Series 8, but only deeply discounted | It is capable, but battery condition and software life are risks. |
| Someone specifically concerned about possible sleep apnea | Series 10 | It supports sleep-apnea notifications; Series 8 does not. |
| A swimmer who only uses pool workout tracking | Either | Both support swimming and 50-meter water resistance. |
| A snorkeler or water-temperature enthusiast | Series 10 | It adds the depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, and Depth app. |
| A buyer who wants a premium lighter case | Series 10 titanium | It replaces Series 8 stainless steel with a lighter titanium option and sapphire crystal. |
| A buyer with an older iPhone | Check compatibility before either purchase | Current watchOS requirements may rule out an older iPhone, especially for future releases. |
| A buyer keeping the watch for several years | Series 10 or Series 11 | Series 8 is omitted from Apple’s announced watchOS 27 list. |
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Apple Watch Series 10 worth upgrading to from Series 8?
It is worth upgrading when you value the larger and brighter display, thinner case, faster charging, sleep-apnea notifications, water-depth or temperature tracking, or longer expected software support. If you mainly use notifications, workouts, ECG, sleep tracking, and heart-rate alerts, Series 8 remains close enough that keeping it may be the better value.
Does Apple Watch Series 10 last longer than Series 8?
Not according to Apple’s normal-use rating: both are rated for up to 18 hours. Series 10’s advantage is charging speed, reaching 80% in about 30 minutes versus about 45 minutes for Series 8. Actual battery life varies with settings, workouts, cellular use, temperature, and battery health.
Does Series 8 support sleep-apnea notifications?
No. Sleep-apnea notifications are available on Series 10 but not Series 8. The feature is intended for eligible adults, may vary by region, and is not a medical diagnosis or substitute for clinical evaluation.
Does Apple Watch Series 10 have Blood Oxygen in the U.S.?
The answer depends on the unit and purchase date. Qualifying U.S. Apple Watch units purchased on or after January 18, 2024 use an iPhone-based Blood Oxygen analysis experience, with results viewed in the Health app; Apple says the data is unavailable in the watch’s Vitals app. Check the part number, including whether it ends in LW/A, and Apple’s current documentation.

Can I use Series 8 bands with Series 10?
Usually, yes. Most bands for 38mm, 40mm, and 41mm cases are compatible with one another, and most bands for 42mm, 44mm, 45mm, and 46mm cases are compatible within that larger band family. Most 41mm Series 8 bands fit 42mm Series 10, and most 45mm Series 8 bands fit 46mm Series 10. Specialty bands and Solo Loops should be checked individually.
Is Series 10 waterproof or suitable for scuba diving?
Neither watch should be described as waterproof. Both are water resistant to 50 meters under Apple’s stated standard. Series 10 adds shallow-water depth tracking to 6 meters, but neither model is intended for scuba diving, waterskiing, or high-velocity water activities.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line
Buy Apple Watch Series 10 when its price is clearly below Series 11 and you want the substantially better display, thinner design, faster charging, sleep-apnea notifications, water sensors, or stronger long-term software outlook.
Keep your Series 8 if it has good battery health and your needs are ordinary smartwatch, workout, safety, and health-tracking functions. It still supports the current watchOS 26 generation as of August 10, 2026.

Buy Series 8 used only at a substantial discount and after checking battery health, Activation Lock, cellular compatibility, water-related wear, and return protection. Its omission from Apple’s announced watchOS 27 compatibility list should be reflected in the price.
Choose Series 11 instead when a refurbished Series 10 approaches the current $399 Series 11 starting price. Series 10 is the better value at the right discount; Series 11 is the better new purchase when the gap is small.
