Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 review: quietly excellent in 2023, selectively worth buying in 2026

The Series 9 is the better Apple Watch for most iPhone owners; the Ultra 2 is the better outdoor tool. Here is what changed, what did not, and whether either discontinued model is worth buying in 2026.

Short answer: the Apple Watch Series 9 was the better choice for most iPhone owners, while the Apple Watch Ultra 2 was the better specialist tool for outdoor users who could justify its size, price, and weight. Both were excellent watches when they launched in September 2023, but neither represented a dramatic redesign or a compelling upgrade from a Series 8 or first-generation Ultra.

The important changes were mostly inside: the S9 SiP, on-device processing for supported Siri requests, Double Tap, brighter displays, 64GB of storage, and second-generation Ultra Wideband. As of August 9, 2026, both models are discontinued from Apple’s main retail lineup. They still make sense used or refurbished only at a substantial discount, with battery health, software compatibility, cellular status, and the United States Blood Oxygen situation checked before purchase.

Table of Contents

The verdict

The Series 9 and Ultra 2 were quietly excellent because Apple improved the parts of the watch that users interact with every day without changing the familiar cases. The S9 made supported Siri requests faster and more private, enabled Double Tap, and delivered more machine-learning capability. The brighter screens were useful in sunlight, the storage doubled to 64GB, and watchOS 10 gave both watches a more capable interface.

But the launch-era praise needs a clear boundary. These were excellent new purchases, not especially exciting annual upgrades. A Series 8 already had nearly the same health, fitness, safety, and smartwatch features. The first-generation Ultra already had the large display, titanium case, Action button, long battery life, and outdoor orientation. Contemporary reviews reached much the same conclusion: the two watches were the best Apple offered in 2023, but existing owners had little reason to replace a healthy previous-generation model. MacRumors’ contemporary review is a useful summary of that consensus.

For most people: choose the Series 9 because it is smaller, lighter, less expensive, and available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. For outdoor athletes: choose the Ultra 2 if you need its roughly two-day battery rating, dual-frequency GPS, sapphire crystal, titanium construction, Action button, siren, or diving features.

For a 2026 buyer: compare either discontinued model against Apple’s current Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 before looking at used stock. Apple currently lists the Series 11 from $399, the SE 3 from $249, and the Ultra 3 at $799 on its United States buying pages. A used Ultra 2 should not be priced close to a new Ultra 3, and a used Series 9 should not be priced close to a new Series 11 unless its condition, cellular configuration, or warranty makes up the difference. See Apple’s current Apple Watch lineup.

What changed from the Series 8 and original Ultra?

Visually, not much. The Series 9 retained the Series 4–8-era rounded design, and the Ultra 2 looked almost identical to the original Ultra. The more consequential changes were functional:

  • S9 SiP: a new system-in-package with a four-core Neural Engine.
  • On-device Siri for supported requests: some requests, including supported Health-data queries, can be processed locally.
  • Double Tap: a wrist gesture for carrying out the primary action in supported contexts.
  • Brighter displays: the Series 9 rose to a stated peak of 2,000 nits and the Ultra 2 to 3,000 nits.
  • 64GB storage: double the 32GB available on the preceding generation.
  • Second-generation Ultra Wideband: useful for supported location and proximity features, but dependent on a compatible iPhone.
  • watchOS 10: redesigned apps, the Smart Stack, new watch faces, cycling functions, and improved hiking tools.

Apple’s launch material described the S9 as up to 30 percent faster than the previous generation and said its Neural Engine could process machine-learning tasks up to twice as fast as the Series 8. Those are Apple’s stated performance claims, not a guarantee that every app opens 30 percent faster. In practice, the S9’s main significance was enabling new interactions and local processing rather than transforming ordinary app-launch times. Apple’s Series 9 launch announcement explains the claimed improvements.

The S9 chip in daily use

On-device Siri is useful, but not all Siri is offline

The S9 allows some Siri requests to be handled on the watch rather than sent away for processing. That matters most when asking for supported information from Health or logging certain health data. Apple says supported Health-data requests are processed on-device, so that information does not leave the watch for those requests.

The limitation is important: this does not mean that every Siri request works without an internet connection. General Siri functions can still require connectivity, compatible services, appropriate language support, and the relevant watchOS version. The Health-data functions initially required watchOS 10.2 and had limited language and regional availability; Apple’s documentation listed United States English and Mandarin Chinese for the supported Health-data requests at the time. Apple’s Siri and Health-data support page describes the conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Series 8 owner, this is a meaningful capability difference only if on-device Health-data Siri is something they will use. It is not a reason by itself to expect the whole watch to feel like a new generation.

Double Tap is a good shortcut, not a new operating system

Double Tap detects two taps of the thumb and index finger on the hand wearing the watch. In supported situations, it performs the primary action shown by the app. Examples include:

  • Answering or ending a phone call.
  • Playing or pausing media.
  • Stopping a timer.
  • Replying to a message.
  • Opening and scrolling through the Smart Stack.
  • Taking a picture with Camera Remote.
  • Recording a voice memo.
  • Snoozing an alarm.
  • Pausing or resuming a stopwatch.

Its best use is situational: when the other hand is holding a bag, a leash, a tool, a phone, or a bicycle handlebar, or when the fingers are wet, dirty, or gloved. It is less impressive when the watch is already easy to operate with the free hand. That explains the split in launch reviews: some reviewers found it an excellent one-handed convenience, while others considered it pleasant but nonessential. Tom’s Guide’s Series 9 review discusses the feature’s practical limitations.

Double Tap is context-dependent and does not replace touch, buttons, or the full interface. It is unavailable when the display is inactive, the watch is locked, Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is active, certain accessibility hand gestures are enabled, or the watch is configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids. It is also unavailable while using the Depth app or taking an ECG. Apple lists the supported actions and restrictions in its Double Tap support documentation.

Second-generation Ultra Wideband has an iPhone dependency

Both watches contain second-generation Ultra Wideband hardware. That does not make every UWB feature universally available. For example, Precision Finding for a nearby iPhone requires a compatible iPhone—Apple’s current documentation specifies iPhone 15 or later for that feature—along with the relevant regional and software support. Check Apple’s Ultra Wideband compatibility requirements.

In other words, the Series 9 has the hardware, but a person pairing it with an older iPhone should not buy it specifically for Precision Finding and assume the feature will work.

Apple Watch Series 9 review

Comfort and size make it the better default

The Series 9 is the watch most iPhone owners should start with. The 41mm case is easier to wear overnight and suits smaller wrists, while the 45mm version gives a larger reading area without becoming as imposing as the Ultra 2. The aluminum models are especially light; stainless-steel versions feel more substantial and use sapphire crystal, but weigh more and were more expensive at launch.

The Ultra 2 is not simply a larger Series 9. It is 49mm wide, 12mm thick, and roughly 61g before the band. That difference is obvious during sleep, exercise, and ordinary desk use. People who prefer discreet or dressier watches, have small wrists, or dislike a bulky case should choose the Series 9 even if they can afford the Ultra 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screen is excellent, with a brightness caveat

The Series 9 has an always-on LTPO OLED display with a stated peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a 1-nit minimum. That is twice the advertised peak of the Series 8. In direct sunlight, the extra headroom is valuable, particularly for checking workout data or directions without shielding the screen with a hand.

Peak brightness is not the same as sustained everyday brightness. The watch does not operate permanently at 2,000 nits, and one contemporary review found the difference difficult to notice in many indoor and outdoor situations without an older watch beside it. The improvement is real, but it is most relevant in bright or difficult conditions rather than as a constant indoor revelation. The Guardian’s review provides useful context on the screen and chip changes.

Aluminum Series 9 models use Ion-X glass, while stainless-steel models use sapphire crystal. Neither should be called scratch-proof, but sapphire is generally the more reassuring choice for frequent contact with hard surfaces.

Performance, health, and workouts

The Series 9 handles notifications, apps, payments, music controls, calls, workouts, and Apple’s health features smoothly. It includes the same mainstream health platform as the Ultra 2: ECG, a third-generation optical heart sensor, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, wrist-temperature sensing, Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep tracking and sleep stages, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, noise monitoring, Medications, and Mindfulness.

For ordinary road running, walking, cycling, gym sessions, and swimming, its standard L1 GPS/GNSS is usually sufficient. It is not the right choice if a buyer regularly navigates steep mountains, dense city streets, or heavily wooded routes and wants the best possible satellite hardware Apple offered in 2023. That is where the Ultra 2’s dual-frequency GPS earns its price.

Battery is the principal compromise

Apple rated the Series 9 for up to 18 hours of normal use or up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. In real use, the exact result depends on cellular activity, signal strength, screen brightness, workouts, GPS, music playback, temperature, notifications, and background activity. Many owners will charge daily; sleep tracking is possible, but it requires more deliberate charging than the Ultra 2.

Low Power Mode extends endurance by reducing or changing some functions. It is useful when the priority is getting through a long day or night, but it is not equivalent to the full normal-use experience.

Buy the Series 9 when:

  • You want the normal Apple Watch experience at the lowest cost.
  • You value 41mm or 45mm sizing and a lighter case.
  • You swim but do not scuba dive or participate in high-speed water sports.
  • You usually charge every day and do not need two-day battery life.
  • You are upgrading from a Series 5 or earlier and find a discounted unit with healthy battery capacity.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 review

The Ultra 2 is a tool watch, not a premium Series 9

The Ultra 2’s extra cost buys a different use case. Its 49mm titanium case, flat sapphire crystal, Action button, siren, larger speaker, depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, cellular connectivity, and dual-frequency GPS are designed for outdoor activity. Its display measures 1,185 square millimeters and reaches a stated peak of 3,000 nits, making it easier to read in harsh sunlight than the Series 9.

That hardware is valuable for a trail runner, hiker, cyclist, diver, or person who routinely spends long days away from a charger. It is unnecessary for someone whose most demanding activities are commuting, office work, occasional gym sessions, and weekend swimming. The size is a trade-off, not a free upgrade: it can feel cumbersome under a sleeve, while sleeping, or on a smaller wrist.

The battery advantage is substantial

Apple rated the Ultra 2 for up to 36 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode—twice the Series 9’s headline figures. This flexibility is the Ultra 2’s biggest everyday advantage. A user can track sleep, complete a long workout, spend a day outdoors, and still have less anxiety about finding a charger.

It remains an Apple Watch rather than a multi-week expedition watch. Continuous GPS workouts, cellular use, bright-screen time, music, cold temperatures, and weak signal conditions can reduce endurance substantially. Independent reviews continued to identify Garmin and similar dedicated sports watches as better choices for extended trips without charging. TechRadar’s Ultra 2 review covers that battery and outdoor trade-off.

GPS is better in difficult environments, not magically perfect

The Ultra 2 adds precision dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS. Multiple frequencies can help reduce errors caused by reflected signals in dense cities, tree cover, steep terrain, and rocky environments. That is a genuine hardware advantage over the Series 9’s standard L1 GPS/GNSS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not mean every Ultra 2 workout is automatically more accurate. Independent sports testing found the Series 9 and Ultra 2’s heart-rate and GPS performance broadly consistent with the preceding Apple Watch generation rather than a wholesale sensor revolution. DC Rainmaker’s sports-focused testing and Wareable’s Series 9 testing are useful counterweights to launch-specification claims.

Wrist-based heart-rate measurement can lag or fail during intervals, strength training, cold-weather activity, poor fit, tattoos, or movements that interrupt optical contact. Serious athletes who need structured training load, recovery analysis, extensive navigation, or weeks of battery life may still be better served by Garmin, COROS, Polar, or Suunto.

Water use and durability

The Ultra 2 is rated to 100 meters, supports recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible app, and is designed for high-speed water sports. Its depth and water-temperature sensors make it the only one of these two watches aimed at those activities. It also has IP6X dust resistance, a titanium case, sapphire crystal, and Apple’s MIL-STD-810H testing claims.

The Series 9 is rated to 50 meters and is intended for swimming and shallow-water use. Apple says not to use it for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other high-velocity or deep-submersion activities. Neither watch is waterproof. Water resistance is not permanent and can decline after impacts, exposure to chemicals, or normal aging. A used Ultra 2 should not be treated as guaranteed dive equipment simply because its original specification says 100 meters. Apple’s water-resistance guidance explains the limitations.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Even with an Ultra 2, recreational diving requires proper dive protocols, a buddy, and appropriate secondary equipment. The watch’s dive capability does not make it a substitute for all dedicated diving instruments or training.

Buy the Ultra 2 when:

  • You regularly hike, trail-run, cycle, dive, or spend long days outdoors.
  • You need the best battery flexibility among the 2023 Apple Watch models.
  • You value dual-frequency GPS, sapphire crystal, titanium, or the Action button.
  • You want a larger display, louder speaker, or emergency siren.
  • You accept a large, heavy watch and can buy it substantially below the price of a new Ultra 3.

Health features: broadly the same, with important qualifications

Series 9 and Ultra 2 share the mainstream health platform. Both include:

  • ECG.
  • Third-generation optical heart sensing.
  • High- and low-heart-rate notifications.
  • Irregular-rhythm notifications.
  • Wrist-temperature sensing.
  • Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates.
  • Sleep tracking and sleep stages.
  • Fall Detection, Crash Detection, and Emergency SOS.
  • Noise monitoring.
  • Medications and Mindfulness apps.

Apple lists sleep-apnea notifications as supported on both models, subject to software, country, regulatory approval, age eligibility, and device requirements. Health features can also depend on the iPhone, language, and watchOS version. Availability is not necessarily identical across countries.

These are health and wellness tools, not a diagnosis. An ECG is not a substitute for clinical evaluation. Blood Oxygen is not intended to diagnose illness. Temperature sensing is not intended for medical use. Sleep-apnea and rhythm notifications can identify possible patterns that deserve follow-up, but the absence of a notification does not prove the absence of a medical condition.

The United States Blood Oxygen complication

The launch specification needs updating for current buyers. After a patent dispute, certain Series 9 and Ultra 2 models sold in the United States beginning January 18, 2024 were sold with the Blood Oxygen feature disabled. Apple identifies affected units by part numbers ending in LW/A. Units purchased outside the United States and previously purchased watches that already had the original feature were not affected in the same way.

Rank #4
Apple Watch Series 9 [GPS, 45mm] - Starlight Aluminum Case with Starlight Sport Band, S/M (Renewed)
  • S9 SiP Processor: Advanced processor improves overall performance and enables on-device Siri functionality.

Apple changed the situation again on August 14, 2025. With iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, affected United States watches received a redesigned Blood Oxygen experience. The watch collects the sensor data, but the paired iPhone performs the calculation and the result appears in the Health app rather than functioning exactly like the original on-watch experience. Apple’s 2025 announcement and current support documentation explain the difference.

Before buying a used unit, verify the country of purchase, purchase date, part-number suffix, watchOS version, paired iPhone software, and whether Blood Oxygen appears in the Health app. Do not assume that every Series 9 or Ultra 2 has identical Blood Oxygen functionality.

Fitness tracking: which one is better?

Priority Better choice Why
Walking, gym workouts, casual running Series 9 It offers the same core workout platform in a smaller, lighter case.
Long trail runs and hikes Ultra 2 Longer battery life, dual-frequency GPS, larger display, and Action button.
Dense-city GPS routes Ultra 2 L1+L5 GPS can better handle reflected or obstructed signals.
Swimming Either, depending on use Series 9 is intended for swimming; Ultra 2 adds greater water resistance and sensors.
Scuba and high-speed water sports Ultra 2 It is the only one of the two rated for those use cases, subject to Apple’s limits.
Structured endurance training and multi-week battery Garmin, COROS, Polar, or Suunto Dedicated sports watches generally offer deeper training tools and longer battery life.

The central choice is whether you want a smartwatch with fitness features or a sports watch with smartwatch features. Apple Watch is generally stronger for iPhone notifications, messaging, payments, apps, calls, and ecosystem integration. Dedicated sports watches are generally stronger for long battery life, physical-button operation, structured training, recovery metrics, navigation, and cross-platform use. Neither category is universally superior.

Battery life and buying used

Apple’s battery figures are ratings based on defined test patterns, not promises for every owner. Cellular use, weak signal, GPS workouts, screen brightness, music playback, temperature, and background activity can all change the result.

On a used watch, battery age matters more than the original model rating. Check:

Apple Watch: Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity.

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time, and an aged battery can affect runtime and performance. A Series 9 with a worn battery may behave like a much less convenient watch; an Ultra 2 with degraded capacity can lose much of the reason to buy the larger case. AppleCare battery service covers replacement when capacity drops below 80 percent, subject to the plan’s terms. Apple’s battery-health guidance and battery service information provide the relevant details.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a seller will not show the Maximum Capacity screen, the watch should be priced as a higher-risk purchase. Also check for activation lock, cracked or deeply scratched glass, case dents, stuck buttons, charging problems, band condition, cellular model and carrier compatibility, and proof that the seller has unpaired and erased the watch. Water resistance should be treated as uncertain on an older or damaged unit, even if the watch passes a casual swim.

If battery life suddenly worsens after an update

Apple says background tasks can temporarily reduce battery life after a software update. Wait several days, then check Maximum Capacity and review Always On, cellular use, workouts, GPS, audio playback, brightness, and background activity. If the decline persists, restart the watch, update the paired iPhone, and compare the result with Battery Usage information before assuming the update permanently damaged the battery. Apple’s post-update battery guidance covers this behavior.

Double Tap troubleshooting

If Double Tap does not respond, check these conditions in order:

  1. Confirm that Settings → Gestures → Double Tap is enabled.
  2. Make sure Wrist Detection and Wake on Wrist Raise are enabled.
  3. Wake the display and unlock the watch.
  4. Turn off Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, Theater Mode, and Water Lock while testing.
  5. Check that the watch was not configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids.
  6. Check for accessibility hand-gesture settings that may conflict with Double Tap.
  7. Wear the watch snugly enough for the sensors to detect movement.
  8. Tap the thumb and index finger twice at a similar pace rather than making a large hand movement.
  9. If there is a tattoo beneath the watch, try the opposite wrist; Apple notes that tattoos can interfere with detection.

Double Tap is disabled in the Depth app and while taking an ECG. It also cannot operate when the display is inactive or the watch is locked, so a gesture that works in one context may appear to fail in another. Apple’s gesture troubleshooting page lists additional conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone compatibility and ecosystem limits

Neither watch works with Android. Cellular connectivity does not turn an Apple Watch into an Android-compatible device. At launch, the Series 9 and Ultra 2 required an iPhone XS or later running iOS 17 or later. Later watchOS releases can change the iPhone requirement, so buyers should check Apple’s current compatibility table before purchasing an older watch.

Some functions require a nearby or compatible iPhone. Family Setup and Apple Watch For Your Kids impose additional feature restrictions. GPS plus Cellular does not mean free or unlimited connectivity: it requires a compatible carrier plan, and service varies by carrier, region, signal, and configuration.

A GPS model can still record many workouts and routes without the iPhone nearby. Calls, messages, notifications, streaming, and other connected functions have different requirements, so choose cellular for a real need rather than assuming it is simply a more powerful GPS model. Apple’s Series 9 specifications include the relevant connectivity details at support.apple.com.

Who should upgrade?

Current watch or phone Recommendation
Series 4 or Series 5 Strong case for Series 9. You gain a substantial performance, display, health-sensor, software, and battery-age improvement, especially at a discount.
Series 6 Consider it if battery or performance is poor. Otherwise, the upgrade is useful rather than transformative.
Series 7 or Series 8 Usually keep it. Upgrade for battery health, on-device Siri, Double Tap, 64GB storage, or a specific Ultra feature—not merely for brightness.
First-generation Ultra Usually keep it. The original Ultra already provides the large display, titanium construction, Action button, long battery life, and outdoor design. Move to Ultra 2 primarily for S9-only features, improved peak brightness, or a particularly good trade-in.
Android phone Neither is suitable. Apple Watch is an iPhone-only product.
Garmin, COROS, Polar, or Suunto Switch only if iPhone integration matters more than sports-watch strengths. Apple Watch is not automatically a better training instrument.

The weak upgrade case is the point many launch reviews underplayed. If a Series 7 or 8 is healthy and doing what its owner needs, a brighter peak display and Double Tap alone do not justify replacement. The same applies to an original Ultra owner who does not need local Siri, the S9 Neural Engine, or the small set of Ultra 2 refinements.

Should you buy a Series 9 or Ultra 2 in 2026?

They are no longer current Apple retail models, so the buying calculation has changed. At launch, $399 for the Series 9 and $799 for the Ultra 2 were current list prices. In 2026, the relevant comparison is not whether those prices were fair in 2023; it is whether a used or refurbished watch offers enough value against Apple’s current lineup.

Series 11

The Series 11 is Apple’s current mainstream model and starts at $399. It has current retail availability, newer hardware, and a longer expected software runway than a discontinued Series 9. Apple lists aluminum and titanium configurations and newer health and connectivity features. If a Series 9 is only modestly cheaper, the Series 11 is the more sensible new purchase. See current Series 11 configurations.

SE 3

The Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249 and is the value option. It does not include every premium health feature, so it is not a direct replacement for a discounted Series 9 if ECG or the Series 9’s sensor set is important. For notifications, workouts, activity tracking, and basic Apple Watch functions, however, it may be the better new budget buy. See current SE 3 configurations.

Ultra 3

The Ultra 3 is the current premium outdoor model and Apple lists it at $799. A used Ultra 2 is attractive only when it is meaningfully cheaper and the buyer does not need the newer model’s connectivity, battery, satellite, or health features. If the price gap is small, buying the current Ultra is easier to justify because it comes with current retail support and a fresh battery.

How large should the discount be?

There is no single fair used price because storage is the same, while condition, battery health, cellular capability, warranty, region, and included bands vary. The practical rule is simple:

  • A Series 9 should be clearly cheaper than a new Series 11, not merely a few dollars cheaper.
  • An Ultra 2 should be clearly cheaper than a new Ultra 3; a low-battery or damaged unit needs a much larger discount.
  • Factor the likely cost and inconvenience of battery service into the price.
  • Do not pay extra for Blood Oxygen until you confirm exactly how that individual unit handles the feature in its country and software state.
  • Prefer a seller who permits activation-lock removal, battery-health inspection, and testing of the display, speakers, microphone, buttons, charging, sensors, and cellular connection.

Design and environmental claims

Apple promoted selected Series 9 and Ultra 2 case-and-band combinations as carbon neutral in 2023. That claim applies to the specific configurations and Apple’s stated product-footprint methodology; it does not mean the entire supply chain has no emissions or that every combination carries the same status. Apple’s carbon-neutral product announcement describes the scope.

Final recommendations by user type

  • Most iPhone owners: buy the Series 9 only if it is substantially discounted and has healthy battery capacity; otherwise buy the Series 11.
  • Outdoor athletes: buy the Ultra 2 if it is heavily discounted and you accept its size; otherwise buy the Ultra 3.
  • Budget buyers: start with the SE 3, unless ECG and the Series 9’s additional health sensors matter to you.
  • Series 7, Series 8, or first-generation Ultra owners: keep your current watch unless its battery is poor or you specifically need an S9 feature, dual-frequency GPS, or a newer outdoor model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Apple Watch Ultra 2 worth the extra cost over the Series 9?

It is worth it for the larger display, roughly double the rated battery life, dual-frequency GPS, sapphire crystal, titanium case, Action button, siren, and diving-oriented sensors. For ordinary iPhone use, commuting, gym workouts, and casual swimming, the Series 9 delivers nearly the same core experience in a smaller and lighter case.

Should I buy an Apple Watch Series 9 in 2026?

Only when it is substantially cheaper than a new Series 11 and its battery health, activation status, display, and software compatibility check out. A Series 9 remains capable, but it is no longer Apple’s current mainstream model.

Does every United States Series 9 or Ultra 2 have Blood Oxygen?

No. Certain United States units sold from January 18, 2024 had the feature disabled and can be identified by affected part numbers ending in LW/A. Apple later introduced an iPhone-calculated Blood Oxygen experience through iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. Verify the individual watch’s country, purchase date, part number, and Health app behavior.

Can an Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 work with Android?

No. Both are iPhone-only. Cellular connectivity does not remove the iPhone requirement or make either watch compatible with Android.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the Series 9 was the quietly excellent all-rounder and the Ultra 2 was the more capable outdoor instrument. Their 2023 improvements were real but mostly functional rather than visual, which made them strong new purchases and weak upgrades from a Series 7, Series 8, or original Ultra. In August 2026, buy either only at a meaningful discount: Series 9 for most iPhone owners, Ultra 2 for people who will actually use its battery, GPS, durability, and water-sports advantages.
