Apple Watch history has three branches: the numbered Series line, the lower-priced SE line, and the rugged Ultra line. Apple announced Series 12 and Ultra 4 in September 2026; SE 3 is the latest SE model identified in the research. For older generations, treat Apple’s archive as the release-history reference and verify exact features for the specific model before buying.
This guide puts the families in context, highlights milestones supported by Apple’s announcements, and explains what to check when identifying or choosing a watch.
Apple Watch models in order
Apple’s Newsroom archive is the primary reference for the release history. The broad sequence includes the original Apple Watch, Series 1 through Series 12, three SE models, and Ultra generations 1 through 4. These are parallel product families, not one continuous numbered list. The sources reviewed here do not substantiate exact dates or full specifications for every intermediate generation.
- Original Apple Watch: introduced in 2015.
- Series 1 through Series 12: the numbered family, with Series 12 announced in 2026.
- Apple Watch SE, SE (2nd generation), and SE 3: the value-oriented branch.
- Apple Watch Ultra, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and Ultra 4: the rugged branch, with Ultra 4 announced in 2026.
For model identification and release-history context, consult Apple’s Apple Watch Newsroom archive. A model’s name alone may not identify its exact configuration or regional capabilities.

How to tell which Apple Watch model you have
Start with the model name and model number shown in the watch or its paired-device information, then compare those details with Apple’s identification resources. Retailer titles and case appearance alone may not distinguish a family, generation, or regional configuration.
- Find the model details: check the watch’s settings or the paired iPhone’s watch information.
- Compare with Apple’s references: use the Apple Watch Newsroom archive for release history and Apple support information for device identification.
- Confirm the configuration: check the exact model and region before relying on cellular service, health features, or compatibility.
- Check accessories individually: confirm band size and charger or cable compatibility for the specific watch rather than assuming one accessory fits all generations.
What is the difference between Series, SE, and Ultra?
| Family | General role | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Series | The numbered mainline family. | Model-specific health, display, workout, safety, and connectivity features. |
| SE | The value-oriented family. | Which features and sensors are included on the particular SE generation. |
| Ultra | The rugged family positioned for sports and adventure. | Model-specific design, outdoor features, battery claims, and connectivity. |
Do not treat family names as a complete specification. Compare the exact models you are considering and check whether the features you need are supported in your region.

What to check before buying
- Exact model: verify the generation and configuration using Apple’s model information.
- Required features: confirm that the specific watch supports the health, safety, workout, and connectivity features you want.
- Region and software: feature availability can vary by location, device, and software version.
- Compatibility: check Apple’s current requirements for the watch and the iPhone or other devices you plan to use with it.
- Condition and price: for a used watch, assess its condition and compare its price with newer alternatives. The research does not establish current used-market prices.
- Accessories: check case and band fit and charger compatibility for the exact model. Apple’s Series 7 announcement discusses bands, but that does not establish that a particular band fits every watch.
Apple’s claims about battery life, charging, and features are tied to specific models and conditions. Treat advertised figures as Apple’s product claims, not guaranteed results for every wearer.
Apple Watch prices and product claims
Prices in the research are U.S. launch or lineup figures, not promises of current local or retail prices. Apple’s 2026 Series 12 announcement lists a U.S. starting price of $399. Apple’s January 2026 overview listed U.S. starting prices of $399 for Series 11, $799 for Ultra 3, and $249 for SE 3. Those January figures describe the lineup at that time, not a current universal price list.
