Apple Watch Ultra 2 Gets Satin-Black Titanium, Titanium Milanese Loop, and Hermès Edition

Apple’s 2024 Ultra 2 refresh added a satin-black titanium case, the first Titanium Milanese Loop for Ultra, and a natural-titanium Hermès edition. Here is what changed—and what buyers should know in 2026.

Apple’s September 2024 refresh gave the Apple Watch Ultra 2 a new satin-black titanium finish, introduced the first Titanium Milanese Loop made for the Ultra family, and added an Apple Watch Hermès Ultra 2. The regular Ultra 2 remained a $799 starting-price watch in the U.S., while the Hermès edition started at $1,399. In 2026, however, Apple’s current U.S. Ultra listing is for the newer Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Here is what changed, what did not, and which version makes sense for different buyers.

What is different about the satin-black case?

The black Ultra 2 was not merely a dark-colored version of the existing case. Apple said it used a custom blasting process on grade 5 titanium, followed by a diamond-like carbon (DLC) physical vapor deposition coating. The watch also received a matching dark zirconia back crystal.

Apple describes the resulting surface as durable and scratch-resistant. That does not mean scratch-proof: hard impacts, abrasion, or damage to a coated surface can still leave visible marks. The black finish is primarily a design change, although buyers should consider that damage to a contrasting black coating may be more noticeable than wear on natural titanium. That comparison is a practical buying consideration, not a quantified Apple durability test.

The natural titanium Ultra 2 remained available, and Apple also introduced black hardware options for the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band.

Apple’s technical description of the finish explains the blasting, DLC coating, and zirconia back crystal.

Titanium Milanese Loop: formal-looking, but intended for water activities

The Titanium Milanese Loop was the first metal band Apple introduced specifically for Apple Watch Ultra. Apple says it is woven from aerospace-grade titanium and made through a process involving weaving, flattening, laser-welding, grinding, and polishing. Its interlocking, lozenge-shaped mesh is secured with a dual-button, parachute-style buckle.

It was offered in natural and black titanium to match the Ultra case finishes. Apple also positioned it for water activities, and said the buckle was designed to stay secure during water sports. That is not the same as saying it is ideal for every type of diving, high-impact activity, sand exposure, or abrasive work. Independent long-term testing would be needed to establish how the mesh handles repeated snagging, abrasion, and corrosion in real-world use.

For a current U.S. reference, Apple lists the Titanium Milanese Loop at $199 in its accessories catalog. Pricing and availability can vary by market.

How it compares with the other Ultra bands

Band Best suited to Trade-off
Titanium Milanese Loop Formal wear, adjustability, and a metal-band feel Costs more and may be less forgiving around snags, sand, and hard abrasion
Ocean Band Swimming, wet conditions, and recreational diving Less formal than a metal mesh band
Trail Loop Running, workouts, and all-day comfort Textile construction lacks the dress-watch appearance
Alpine Loop Hiking and rugged outdoor use Less quickly adjustable than the Milanese Loop

Apple’s current U.S. accessory listing shows the Ocean, Trail, and Alpine bands at $99, compared with $199 for the Titanium Milanese Loop. These are listed accessory prices, not necessarily the historical incremental prices of every 2024 bundle.

Apple Watch Hermès Ultra 2

The Hermès model was not a black Hermès Ultra 2. Its launch configuration used a natural titanium case with a Hermès En Mer band in Bleu Nuit.

The band used a nautical diagonal-rib pattern, high-density textured knit construction, and a wide titanium buckle. The package also included the exclusive Hermès Maritime watch face, which featured Cape Cod-inspired numerals, an outer seconds bezel, and an Action-button countdown timer inspired by boat racing.

Internally, this was an Ultra 2 platform with Hermès-specific design and software elements, not a faster or more capable hardware generation. The U.S. launch price was $1,399, compared with $799 for the regular Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The premium therefore made sense chiefly for buyers who valued Hermès branding, the En Mer band, and the exclusive watch-face experience. It was not a performance upgrade.

Apple’s U.S. announcement includes the Hermès specifications and launch pricing.

What stayed the same?

The 2024 update was a finish, band, and special-edition refresh—not a new Ultra generation. The underlying Ultra 2 platform retained headline specifications including:

  • 49mm titanium case
  • Up to 36 hours of regular-use battery life
  • Up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode
  • Up to 3,000 nits of display brightness
  • Dual-frequency GPS
  • Cellular connectivity
  • Water- and diving-oriented features

There is no evidence in Apple’s announcement that the black case delivered a faster processor, longer battery life, brighter display, or more accurate sensors than the natural titanium Ultra 2. The meaningful difference was appearance and, depending on the configuration, the included band.

watchOS 11 features were software features

The announcement also highlighted watchOS 11 features such as Training Load, the Vitals app, sleep-apnea notifications, the Tides app, and additional Action button customization. These came primarily from the software update and should not be treated as capabilities exclusive to the black Ultra 2.

watchOS features can have device, iPhone, language, and regional restrictions. Apple required an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 for watchOS 11, and warned that not every feature was available on every device or in every region.

Is the Apple Watch Ultra 2 still worth buying in 2026?

For a new purchase directly from Apple in the U.S., the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the more relevant comparison: Apple’s current buying page centers on Ultra 3, available in black and natural titanium, and still offers Titanium Milanese Loop configurations. The page surfaced for this article lists Ultra 3 from $799, with a Titanium Milanese Loop configuration at $899.

That makes the 2024 Ultra 2 most attractive when it is meaningfully cheaper than Ultra 3 and its condition is strong. A used or refurbished listing should be checked for:

  • battery health and charging behavior;
  • Activation Lock status;
  • serial-number and warranty information;
  • cellular compatibility for the intended carrier and region;
  • a clear return policy;
  • genuine, correctly sized bands and accessories.

Do not assume Ultra 2 is unavailable everywhere: stock differs by country, retailer, and used-market seller. But buyers should not mistake an older discounted Ultra 2 for Apple’s current flagship.

View Apple’s current Ultra buying page.

Which version should you choose?

  • Choose black Ultra 2 if the darker finish is the priority and the watch is available at a substantial discount.
  • Choose natural titanium if the watch will face heavy abrasion or you prefer a finish that may make scuffs less visually prominent.
  • Choose Titanium Milanese Loop if you want a highly adjustable metal band that can move from formal clothing to everyday use.
  • Choose Ocean Band for frequent swimming, wet, sandy, or water-focused use.
  • Choose Trail Loop for running and extended workouts.
  • Choose Alpine Loop for hiking and rugged outdoor use.
  • Choose Hermès Ultra 2 only if the Hermès design, branding, band, and exclusive Maritime face justify the premium.
  • Choose Ultra 3 when buying new from Apple in 2026, especially if its price is close to an Ultra 2 listing.

Verdict

The satin-black Apple Watch Ultra 2 was a substantial style refresh, not a new performance generation. The Titanium Milanese Loop added a more luxurious alternative to Apple’s sport bands, while the Hermès edition targeted buyers who wanted exclusive fashion and watch-face details. For most sport and water users, the Ocean, Trail, or Alpine Loop remains the more practical choice. In 2026, Ultra 2 is primarily a value play on the used or discounted market; buyers seeking Apple’s newest Ultra should start with Ultra 3.
