Apple Watch Series 10 launched on September 9, 2024, and went on sale September 20. It introduced Apple’s thinnest Apple Watch design at launch, larger 42mm and 46mm cases, a wide-angle OLED display, sleep-apnea notifications, faster charging, and new shallow-water sensors. In 2026, however, it is a previous-generation model: Apple’s current U.S. lineup includes Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3.
That makes Series 10 a sensible buy only when it is substantially cheaper than Series 11, or when its thin design and specific health and water features matter more than buying the newest model.

The headline change was a slimmer body paired with a larger display. Series 10 measures approximately 9.7mm thick, compared with about 10.7mm for Series 9—a reduction of roughly 1mm, or about 9% by simple calculation. The larger case and display mean that thinner does not mean every dimension became smaller.

Apple offered two case sizes: 42mm and 46mm. The redesigned screen provides up to 30% more active display area than Apple Watch Series 4, 5, and 6, and up to 9% more than Series 7, 8, and 9. Apple also says the wide-angle OLED display is up to 40% brighter when viewed at an angle than the previous generation. See Apple’s launch announcement for the comparison figures.
In everyday use, the larger screen can make text, controls, complications, messages, and workout metrics easier to read. The improvement is most likely to stand out for Series 6 and older owners, people using larger text, and anyone who frequently reads information without reaching for an iPhone. Series 7–9 owners should expect a more incremental visual change rather than a dramatic transformation.
Sleep-apnea notifications: useful screening, not a diagnosis
Series 10 uses its accelerometer to monitor small wrist movements associated with breathing disturbances during sleep. It looks for patterns associated with moderate to severe sleep apnea and can notify the wearer when those patterns suggest that medical follow-up may be appropriate.
Apple calls this feature sleep-apnea notifications—not a diagnosis. It requires wearing the watch while sleeping, and the data collection and analysis take time; it is not an instant sleep test. Anyone who receives a notification should discuss it with a healthcare professional rather than treating the watch as a replacement for clinical testing.
Availability depends on regulatory clearance, country, language, age, hardware, and software requirements. Apple attributed the underlying clinical-study and regulatory claims to its own launch materials, so those claims should not be read as independent medical validation.

Which health features are actually new?
Series 10 combines new hardware with software that also runs on some older watches. Keeping those categories separate avoids overstating the upgrade.
Series 10 hardware additions
- Sleep-apnea notifications, where supported.
- A depth gauge rated to 6 meters (20 feet).
- A water-temperature sensor.
- Faster charging.
- The redesigned larger display and thinner case.
watchOS 11 features shared with older models
watchOS 11 introduced the Vitals app, which summarizes overnight measurements such as heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and sleep duration. It can flag when multiple metrics are outside a user’s typical range. Vitals is primarily a software feature, not an exclusive Series 10 capability.

At launch, Apple said watchOS 11 supported Apple Watch Series 6 and later with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. For a Series 10 purchase in 2026, check Apple’s current compatibility page for the watchOS version you intend to use; launch requirements are not necessarily the latest requirements.
Series 10 also supports ECG, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, low-cardio-fitness notifications, wrist-temperature sensing, cycle tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep stages, Fall Detection, and Crash Detection. Many of these features were already available on earlier Apple Watch models, and some are subject to regional restrictions.
Water features: better for swimming and snorkeling, not diving
The Series 10 adds a 6-meter depth gauge, a water-temperature sensor, and a Tides app. These features support swimming, snorkeling, and other shallow-water activities within Apple’s stated limits.

Although the watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, that does not make it a dive computer. Apple says Series 10 should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing, high-velocity water activities, or submersion below shallow depths. The 6-meter gauge does not replace specialized diving equipment. Apple’s water-resistance guidance explains the restrictions.

Series 10 is rated for up to 18 hours of normal use, up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode, and up to 80% charge in about 30 minutes. The important improvement is charging convenience—not a breakthrough in all-day endurance.
Fast charging makes it easier to top up between waking and sleeping, which is particularly useful for sleep tracking. Actual battery life varies with cellular use, GPS workouts, the Always-On Display, notifications, music or podcast playback, sleep tracking, Low Power Mode, and battery age.
In other words, Series 10 did not eliminate the need to charge regularly. Buyers who want substantially longer endurance should look at the Ultra range instead.
Series 10 versus older Apple Watches
Series 4–6
This is where the upgrade is most substantial. You get a much larger active display than Series 4–6, a thinner design, a newer processor, faster charging, and newer health and water capabilities. Owners who use larger text or frequently read messages on the watch are especially likely to notice the display change.

Series 7–8
The display increase is smaller, but sleep-apnea notifications, faster charging, and the depth and water-temperature sensors may justify upgrading. If those features are not priorities, an older watch may still cover basic notifications, workouts, and safety functions.
Series 9
Series 10 is a relatively modest design upgrade from Series 9: approximately 1mm thinner and up to 9% larger in active display area. The case, charging, shallow-water sensors, and sleep-apnea notifications are the more meaningful differences. Series 9 owners should upgrade based on those specific needs, not simply because Series 10 is newer.
Ultra 2
Series 10 is thinner and more discreet than an Ultra, making it better suited to ordinary daily wear for many people. Ultra models are the stronger choice for longer battery life, rugged outdoor use, and demanding activities. Series 10 is not an Ultra substitute for diving or expedition use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Apple Watch Series 10 still worth buying in 2026?
Apple’s U.S. store, checked as of August 18, 2026, lists Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3—not Series 10—as its current new-watch lineup. Series 10 is therefore most relevant as a discounted, used, or refurbished model.
The key comparison is the actual price gap, not the original launch price. Apple introduced Series 10 from $399 in the U.S.; Apple’s current store lists Series 11 from $399 in the U.S. If a Series 10 costs close to Series 11, the newer model is the safer purchase because it is currently sold and should have a longer support and warranty runway.

- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 12 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.*
Series 10 becomes compelling when it is meaningfully cheaper and comes with dependable condition information. Its thin case, large display, sleep-apnea notifications, fast charging, and water sensors remain useful even though the model is no longer current.
Choose Series 10 if:
- You can buy it substantially below Series 11 pricing.
- You are upgrading from Series 4–6 and want a noticeably larger display.
- You want sleep-apnea notifications without buying an Ultra.
- You value a thin, light everyday watch.
- You swim or snorkel and understand the 6-meter shallow-water limit.
Choose something else if:
- Series 10 is priced close to Series 11.
- You want the longest battery life in Apple’s standard watch range.
- You need rugged outdoor hardware or serious diving equipment.
- You use Android; Apple Watch requires an iPhone.
- Your iPhone does not meet the applicable current software requirement.
Series 10 versus the current alternatives
| Model | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Series 10 | Discounted previous-generation watch with a thin case, large display, sleep-apnea notifications, and water sensors | Previous-generation availability and support runway |
| Series 11 | Most buyers seeking a new standard Apple Watch in 2026 | Usually costs more than a discounted Series 10 |
| SE 3 | Lower-cost notifications, fitness, safety, and Apple ecosystem features | No ECG or sleep-apnea notifications and a less complete sensor package |
| Ultra 3 | Battery endurance, rugged outdoor use, and specialized activities | More expensive and bulkier |
Apple lists the SE 3 from $249 in the U.S. and Series 11 from $399, although configurations and prices can change. Check the current Apple Watch lineup before buying.
What to check when buying a used or refurbished Series 10
- Battery health: Ask for the battery-health percentage and look for signs of unusually fast drain.
- Activation Lock: Confirm that the previous owner removed the watch from their Apple Account before payment.
- Cellular compatibility: GPS + Cellular models require a supported carrier, and regional bands may differ.
- Condition and accessories: Check the screen, case, charger, and included bands.
- Warranty and returns: Prefer a seller with clear coverage and a meaningful return period.
- Health-feature availability: Confirm that the exact model and country support the features you need, including ECG and sleep-apnea notifications.
Verdict
Apple Watch Series 10 was a meaningful redesign at launch: thinner than Series 9, larger without adopting the Ultra’s bulk, quicker to charge, and equipped with new sleep and shallow-water capabilities. It did not, however, deliver longer rated battery life, and several headline watchOS 11 features also reached older supported watches.

In 2026, buy Series 10 for its specific strengths only when the discount is substantial and the unit’s condition is trustworthy. If the price is close to Series 11, choose Series 11 for its current availability and longer support horizon. Choose SE 3 to save money on core smartwatch functions, or Ultra 3 when endurance and rugged outdoor use matter most.
