Apple Watch Ultra 2 Review (2025): Still Worth Buying After the Ultra 3?

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 remains excellent for iPhone users, but in 2025 it is worth buying mainly at a substantial discount below the Ultra 3.

Yes—but only at the right price. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 remains an excellent smartwatch and fitness watch for iPhone owners, combining a huge bright display, strong health tracking, dual-frequency GPS, rugged materials, diving features and roughly two-day battery life. But the Apple Watch Ultra 3 replaced it in September 2025 at the same $799 U.S. launch price, so the Ultra 2 is now compelling mainly as discounted, refurbished or remaining retail stock.

Buy it when the discount is substantial and you do not need the newer model’s hardware-specific connectivity features. Choose the Ultra 3 when prices are close, a standard Apple Watch when you want a smaller and cheaper device, or Garmin/COROS when battery life and endurance training matter more than smartwatch convenience.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: the 2025 verdict

The Ultra 2 is still one of the best Apple Watches for outdoor users. Its 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal, 3,000-nit always-on display, Action button, cellular connectivity, advanced workout tools and recreational diving support make it substantially more capable than a standard Apple Watch.

Its weakness is not performance. It is value and endurance. The Ultra 2 launched in 2023 at $799, but after the Ultra 3 arrived in September 2025, paying close to that price for older hardware makes little sense. The Ultra 2 also cannot match Garmin or COROS watches for multi-day GPS use, expedition navigation or weeks-long battery life.

Buy the Ultra 2 if… Skip it if…
You use an iPhone and find it substantially below the Ultra 3. It costs only slightly less than the Ultra 3.
You want a large, bright, rugged Apple Watch. You prefer a compact, lightweight watch.
You regularly run, hike, cycle, swim or dive. You need several days or weeks of battery life.
Two-day-class battery life is sufficient. You need a dedicated expedition watch or satellite communicator.

Apple’s technical specifications confirm the core hardware and features discussed below.

What changed from the original Apple Watch Ultra?

The Ultra 2 is an incremental update rather than a redesign. It retains the original Ultra’s basic 49mm titanium form factor, but adds Apple’s S9 SiP, a four-core Neural Engine, 64GB of storage, on-device processing for some Siri requests and the Double Tap gesture.

The display’s maximum brightness rose from 2,000 nits on the original Ultra to 3,000 nits on the Ultra 2. Apple also rates the Ultra 2 for up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, compared with the original model’s shorter low-power rating. The new Modular Ultra face makes better use of the large panel.

These are meaningful refinements, particularly for owners of the first Ultra, but they do not transform the watch. Ultra owners who mainly want notifications, ordinary workouts and sleep tracking may not need to upgrade. The brighter screen, faster processing, Double Tap and newer health and software support make the upgrade more attractive when the price difference is modest.

Design, size and comfort

The Ultra 2 is a physically large watch. Its titanium case measures 49mm wide and 12mm deep. Natural titanium weighs 61.4g; the black titanium version is listed at 61.8g, before adding the band. Apple specifies wrist compatibility from 130mm to 210mm.

Titanium keeps the case lighter than an equivalent steel design, while the flat sapphire crystal is highly resistant to scratches. Neither material makes the watch indestructible: titanium can show scuffs, and sapphire can still be damaged by a hard impact. Raised guards protect the Digital Crown and side controls, and the Action button provides a convenient way to start workouts or trigger other configured actions.

The size is an advantage when reading maps, workout metrics and large complications. It is a disadvantage for smaller wrists, tight sleeves and sleep tracking. The watch can catch on clothing and may feel heavy during sleep or running. Band choice also matters considerably. Comfort is not universal, so prospective buyers should check the case dimensions and return policy rather than assume that “Ultra” means comfortable for every athlete.

Display: one of the Ultra 2’s strongest features

The Ultra 2 uses an always-on LTPO2 OLED display with a 410 × 502-pixel resolution and 1,185 square millimeters of display area. It can reach a claimed maximum brightness of 3,000 nits and dim to 1 nit. A sapphire crystal protects the panel.

The practical advantage is more than the headline brightness. The combination of a large screen, high contrast, always-on viewing and dense complications makes maps, pace fields and workout data easier to read at a glance. Wayfinder and Modular Ultra support Night Mode in suitable conditions, which is useful when moving between daylight and darkness.

Peak brightness is not a guarantee of perfect visibility in every situation. Glare, sunglasses, viewing angle, sweat and the content being displayed all matter. WIRED’s testing found the display extremely bright but not dramatically easier to read than an iPhone in every direct-sunlight condition. Even with that qualification, the Ultra 2’s screen is a major reason to choose it over a smaller standard Apple Watch.

Smartwatch experience: an Apple Watch first

The Ultra 2 is best understood as an Apple Watch first and an adventure watch second. It handles notifications, calls, texts, Apple Pay, music, podcasts, calendars, reminders, Find My, maps and third-party apps better than most dedicated sports watches. It also works naturally with an iPhone and AirPods.

The S9 chip enables on-device processing for some Siri requests, while Double Tap lets you perform selected actions by tapping the fingers of the watch hand together. These features are useful in situations where touching the display is awkward, although they do not replace ordinary controls for every task.

Cellular connectivity is standard on the Ultra 2, but a supported carrier plan is required. LTE can let you leave the iPhone behind for calls, messages, streaming and some online functions. Carrier support varies by country, and some features still depend on Wi-Fi or a nearby iPhone.

That distinction matters outdoors. Cellular independence is not the same as expedition independence. Offline maps and GPS make the watch useful away from signal, but route preparation and some navigation workflows may still involve the iPhone. The Ultra 2 is not a replacement for a dedicated satellite communicator or a multi-day expedition watch.

Fitness and outdoor performance

Running

The Ultra 2 supports dual-frequency GPS, heart-rate zones, custom workouts, Pacer, Race Route, track detection, multisport workouts and an Action-button workout shortcut. Running metrics include pace, distance, elevation, cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation and ground-contact measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a strong choice for runners who want accurate-feeling outdoor tracking alongside calls, music, apps and health data. Training software has also become more capable through watchOS updates, including features such as training load where supported by the installed version.

Garmin and COROS remain preferable for runners who prioritize deeper training analytics, longer battery life, extensive recovery tools and less frequent charging. The Ultra 2 is an unusually capable smartwatch for serious athletes, but it is not automatically the best dedicated running watch.

Hiking and navigation

The compass, bearing, incline, elevation, coordinates, custom waypoints, elevation alerts and Backtrack provide useful tools for day hikes. Offline maps and custom routes make the Ultra 2 more practical when a cellular signal disappears. Apple also supports hiking content for national parks in supported regions.

Preparation is essential. Download maps and organize routes before leaving coverage. Offline maps do not automatically make the Ultra 2 equivalent to a Garmin with long-running topographic navigation. Battery consumption, route preparation and the need to recharge remain important limitations on multi-day trips.

Cycling

Cyclists can use cadence, power zones and Functional Threshold Power features, connect Bluetooth cycling accessories and view cycling information through the iPhone’s Live Activity features. Cellular connectivity and music are useful on everyday rides, though GPS, LTE and streaming can reduce battery life quickly.

Swimming and diving

For swimming, the Ultra 2 supports pool metrics, stroke detection, SWOLF and water-temperature readings. It also includes a depth gauge, automatic dive launch and GPS entry and exit points.

Apple supports recreational diving to 40 meters, with expanded functions available through the Oceanic+ app. Oceanic+ requires a subscription, and plan availability and pricing vary by region. The Ultra 2 should not be treated as a substitute for dive training, buddy procedures, appropriate backup equipment or professional dive equipment. Follow Apple’s diving safety guidance and established dive protocols.

Health, wellness and safety

The Ultra 2 includes ECG, heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, temperature sensing, cycle tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep-stage tracking, sleep-apnea notifications, noise monitoring, medication tracking, mindfulness and state-of-mind tools.

It also supports Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS. Emergency SOS requires suitable cellular service or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone, and availability varies by country and network.

These features are not medical diagnoses. ECG requires the wearer to remain still and follow the app’s instructions. Sleep-apnea notifications are screening-related alerts, not a clinical diagnosis. Availability can vary with age, country, regulatory approval, setup and software version.

Blood oxygen functionality deserves particular caution. Availability can differ by market, device origin and regulatory restrictions, so buyers of imported, refurbished or used units should verify exactly which health features are enabled on that watch.

Battery life and charging

Apple rates the Ultra 2 for up to 36 hours of normal use, up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode and up to 80% charge in approximately one hour. These are controlled estimates, not guarantees.

Apple’s 36-hour test includes 600 time checks, 180 notifications, 30 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout. The 72-hour Low Power Mode test uses 1,200 time checks, 360 notifications, 60 minutes of app use and two 60-minute workouts. Actual endurance changes with cellular use, signal strength, GPS, music, display settings, workout duration and temperature.

Use pattern What to expect
Notifications and occasional workouts Comfortably beyond a day.
Sleep tracking plus a daily GPS workout Generally a two-day-class experience, but charging still needs planning.
Long GPS hikes with music and cellular Battery can fall substantially faster.
Multi-day backpacking Usually requires Low Power Mode, a charger or a backup plan.
Expedition use A Garmin, COROS or separate satellite communicator is better suited.

In one reported WIRED test, a two-hour trail run using GPS, music and Backtrack consumed about 25% of the battery. That result is useful context, not a universal prediction. Tom’s Guide likewise placed the Ultra 2 in roughly the two-to-three-day range while noting that sports watches can last much longer.

Low Power Mode extends endurance by changing or reducing some functions. It is helpful for long outings, but it does not turn the Ultra 2 into a weeks-long sports watch.

watchOS in the 2025 context

A 2025 assessment should not treat the Ultra 2 as the same product it was at launch. Later watchOS updates add interface, health and workout capabilities, and many of those features are shared with newer Apple Watches. The installed software version matters: launch-era watchOS 10 behavior should not be silently presented as the complete 2025 experience.

At the same time, software cannot add missing hardware. Newer Ultra models may have connectivity or satellite capabilities that the Ultra 2 cannot gain through an update. Wareable’s Ultra 3 comparison describes the broad software and sports overlap while distinguishing hardware-based differences.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 versus a standard Apple Watch

Ultra 2 advantage Why it matters
49mm display More room for maps, metrics and complications.
Titanium and sapphire More rugged construction and improved scratch resistance.
3,000-nit display Better outdoor readability potential.
36-hour official rating Less frequent charging than standard models.
Dual-frequency GPS Useful for challenging urban and outdoor environments.
Action button and Siren Faster workout access and an emergency attention signal.
Depth gauge and water-temperature sensor Supports swimming and recreational diving features.
Cellular included Phone-free communication with a supported plan.

A standard Apple Watch remains the better value for walking, gym workouts, casual running, notifications, sleep tracking and basic health monitoring. It is smaller, lighter and less expensive while retaining much of the same Apple ecosystem.

Apple Watch Ultra [GPS + Cellular 49mm] Titanium Case with Midnight Ocean Band, One Size (Renewed)
  • WHY APPLE WATCH ULTRA - Rugged and capable, built to meet the demands of endurance athletes, outdoor adventurers, and water sports enthusiasts - with a specialized band for each. Up to 36 hours of battery life, plus all the Apple Watch features that help you stay healthy, safe, and connected.
  • EXTREMELY RUGGED, INCREDIBLY CAPABLE - 49mm corrosion-resistant titanium case. Larger Digital Crown and more accessible buttons. 100m water resistance. Customizable Action button for instant physical control over a variety of functions.
  • BIGGEST, BRIGHTEST DISPLAY YET- A bright Always-On Retina display that’s easy to see, even in direct sunlight. More room for adding complications to customize your watch face.
  • FOR ENDURANCE ATHLETES - Advanced metrics in the Workout app, including Heart Rate Zones and Running Form. Precision dual-frequency GPS for accuracy, distance, route, and pace calculations. Trail Loop band is thin, light, and flexible, designed especially for runners.
  • FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURERS - Redesigned Compass app delivers all-new views and functionality. Mark your location with Compass Waypoints. Backtrack uses GPS to map where you’ve been so you can retrace your steps. Alpine Loop band is extremely rugged and secure to meet the needs of hikers and climbers.

The Ultra 2 is justified by specific needs—not simply by being the most expensive Apple Watch. If you will not use the larger screen, longer battery rating, rugged construction, advanced outdoor tools or diving features, the standard model may be more comfortable and sensible.

Ultra 2 versus Ultra 3

The Ultra 3 replaced the Ultra 2 in September 2025 and launched in the United States at the same $799 price point. Apple no longer officially sold the Ultra 2 after the replacement, although remaining stock and refurbished units could continue through third-party sellers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The models share much of the core Apple Watch experience, including major software, health and sports capabilities. The Ultra 3’s important advantages are hardware-specific features such as newer connectivity and satellite capabilities—features software cannot add to the Ultra 2.

  • New buyer: Choose the Ultra 3 if the Ultra 2 is only slightly cheaper. Choose the Ultra 2 when the discount is substantial and its missing hardware features do not matter.
  • Original Ultra owner: An Ultra 2 upgrade can make sense for the brighter display, S9 chip, Double Tap and newer processing, especially at a good price.
  • Ultra 2 owner: Upgrading is generally unnecessary unless the Ultra 3’s connectivity or satellite functions are essential.
  • Standard Apple Watch owner: Upgrade for battery life, durability, display size, dual-frequency GPS, the Action button and outdoor features—not merely for ordinary notifications or health tracking.

Do not use a fixed discount threshold: compare the actual price, warranty and return terms in your market on the day you buy.

Ultra 2 versus Garmin and COROS

The fairest comparison depends on priorities. The Ultra 2 is better as a single device for iPhone life and fitness. Garmin and COROS are generally better as dedicated endurance and outdoor tools.

Choose Ultra 2 for… Choose Garmin or COROS for…
Notifications, calls, texts and third-party apps. Multi-day or multi-week battery life.
Apple Pay and deep iPhone integration. Long GPS activities and expeditions.
Health features and a polished touch interface. More extensive training and recovery analysis.
A bright display and everyday smartwatch convenience. Physical buttons and glove-friendly operation.
One watch for lifestyle and serious recreational fitness. A purpose-built sports watch with less frequent charging.

TechRadar and Tom’s Guide both highlighted the substantial endurance advantage of sports-focused alternatives. That does not make Garmin or COROS better for every iPhone owner; it means they solve a different problem.

Buying a discounted, refurbished or used Ultra 2

Because the Ultra 2 is now previous-generation hardware, the seller and condition matter as much as the headline price. Before buying, check:

  1. Battery health and whether it can realistically deliver the expected two-day experience.
  2. Activation Lock has been removed and the watch can be paired to your account.
  3. The cellular model is not stolen, blacklisted or incompatible with your carrier and region.
  4. The charger is genuine or from a reputable source.
  5. The display and case have no damage that compromises use.
  6. The seller provides a meaningful return period and warranty.
  7. The band is the correct size and included in the stated condition.
  8. The watch’s region and device origin do not affect health features you expect to use.
  9. Water resistance is not being treated as guaranteed after repairs or significant damage.

Old retail stock priced near the Ultra 3 is not automatically a bargain. A used Ultra 2 with poor battery health can erase the main practical advantage of the model, while a damaged or repaired unit may be a poor choice for swimming or diving.

Who should buy the Apple Watch Ultra 2?

Buy it if you are an iPhone owner who wants Apple’s best combination of smartwatch functions, health features, bright display, rugged construction and outdoor fitness tools—and you can find it at a meaningful discount.

It is especially attractive for runners, hikers, cyclists, swimmers and recreational divers who want calls, music, apps and Apple Pay on the same device. It is also a strong upgrade from a standard Apple Watch when battery life, durability and navigation matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy it if you use Android, dislike large watches, need multi-week endurance, require serious expedition navigation or expect a smartwatch to replace a satellite communicator. A standard Apple Watch is better for many everyday users, while Garmin or COROS is the more appropriate choice for battery-first athletes.

Final verdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 remains an excellent watch in 2025, but it is no longer an automatic $799 recommendation. Its hardware is still fast and durable, its display is outstanding for maps and workouts, and its health, safety and smartwatch features remain unusually complete.

Its value now depends on the gap between its price and the Ultra 3. If the Ultra 2 is substantially cheaper, has good battery health and comes from a reputable seller, it remains a smart purchase. If the prices are close, buy the Ultra 3. If your priority is endurance rather than Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem, choose Garmin or COROS instead.
