Apple Watch Ultra 4 is a $799 (U.S.) rugged smartwatch announced September 9, 2026, with store availability beginning September 18. Its biggest change is a redesigned Health Sensing System that Apple says records heart-rate data more frequently and adds readiness insights. That makes it a more meaningful update for people interested in health and training trends than for Ultra 3 owners seeking a new design or a proven leap in battery life. Apple’s claims and an early hands-on assessment are available; a definitive independent long-term verdict is not.
What’s new in Apple Watch Ultra 4?
Apple’s headline update is the Health Sensing System, supported by the S11 chip. Apple says background heart-rate readings can occur every five seconds and heart-rate variability (HRV) readings as often as every five minutes. It also introduces readiness insights positioned as a way to inform training decisions. These are product capabilities and wellness features—not evidence that the watch diagnoses a condition or that its readings improve health outcomes.
Apple also promotes longer battery life and outdoor workout tracking of up to 45 hours. That figure is Apple’s claim, not an independent measurement: its battery testing used preproduction watches and prerelease software in July and August 2026. Runtime varies with use, configuration, network, signal, and other conditions. Apple’s technical specifications and test qualifications are on its Apple Watch specifications page.
Other additions include Audio Intelligence features such as Sound Recognition and faster Shazam. Live Rewind and Siri Recap are expected in beta in late 2026, rather than being features to assume are available everywhere today. Apple says those features require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, excluding iPhone 16e; the initial rollout is in English, with no initial availability in the EU. Server-side features may also have daily usage limits. Availability, language support, and status can change.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 specifications and fit
| Specification | Apple Watch Ultra 4 |
|---|---|
| Case | Grade 5 titanium, natural or black |
| Height × width × depth | 49 × 44 × 12 mm |
| Weight | 63.0 g (natural); 63.1 g (black) |
| Display | 422 × 514 pixels; 1,245 mm² display area; sapphire crystal |
| Stated wrist fit | 130–210 mm |
| Water and dust ratings | WR100; IP6X |
| U.S. launch price | Starting at $799 |
Apple lists the case in natural and black Grade 5 titanium. At 49 mm tall and 63 g or more, it is a substantial watch; wrist fit and comfort matter as much as the rugged materials if you plan to wear it all day or overnight. Apple lists a wrist range of 130–210 mm. Confirm that your preferred band fits your wrist and check current local pricing and availability, since the $799 starting price is for the U.S. launch.
How durable and dive-ready is it?
Apple describes the display as sapphire crystal, says the watch was tested to MIL-STD-810H, and rates it IP6X for dust resistance. Its WR100 rating is under ISO 22810:2010 and is intended for high-speed water sports. Apple says recreational scuba use is supported to 40 meters when using a compatible third-party app. The watch should not be used below 40 meters, and Apple warns that water resistance is not permanent and can diminish over time. These qualifications matter: a rating is not a promise that a watch remains waterproof indefinitely.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs. Ultra 3: should you upgrade?
The evidence supports a cautious generational verdict, not a claim that Ultra 4 is a decisive upgrade for everyone. TechRadar’s September 17, 2026 hands-on coverage calls it an evolution of Ultra 3 and says the reviewer needs more time to assess Readiness and later AI features. That is useful early context, but it is not a sustained side-by-side test. The available information also does not establish every Ultra 3 specification or an independent direct comparison.

| What matters to you | What the evidence says about Ultra 4 | Upgrade implication |
|---|---|---|
| More frequent heart and HRV data | Apple says background heart-rate readings can occur every five seconds and HRV readings as often as every five minutes. | Potentially relevant if you will use the new data and readiness insights; these remain wellness features, not medical diagnosis. |
| Battery during long workouts | Apple claims up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking; its testing used preproduction hardware and prerelease software in July and August 2026. | Do not treat the figure as independently verified or assume it matches your use. |
| New look or smaller watch | Apple’s published Ultra 4 case dimensions are 49 × 44 × 12 mm. | The published information offers no reason to expect a smaller case; prioritize fit if size is a concern. |
| Readiness and upcoming AI features | TechRadar’s early hands-on called the generation an evolution and reserved judgment on Readiness and later AI features. Some AI features are pending or region-limited. | Wait for availability in your region and fuller evaluation if these are your main reason to upgrade. |
For an Ultra 3 owner, the clearest reason to consider Ultra 4 is a specific interest in its new sensing and readiness features—not an established independent performance advantage. If your current watch meets your needs, early hands-on coverage alone does not make a compelling case to replace it. Buyers comparing the two should also check current prices and the exact feature availability in their region; the $799 U.S. launch price does not establish the Ultra 3’s current price or value.

Apple says the watch ships with a band and a one-meter magnetic fast charging cable. Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band styles are optional choices, not required add-ons. Apple reports 45% recycled content overall, including a case made with 100% recycled titanium and a battery using 100% recycled cobalt; those are manufacturer-reported material figures.

Verdict: who should buy Apple Watch Ultra 4?
Ultra 4 is most interesting to buyers who want Apple’s large titanium sports watch and expect to use its more frequent heart and HRV readings, readiness insights, or outdoor and water-sport capabilities. Its rugged specifications are appealing on paper, but the battery figure is a manufacturer test claim and the new health features do not establish clinical value. Existing Ultra 3 owners have a reason to upgrade only if the new sensing features matter to their routine; the available early assessment does not establish a broad, independently tested generational leap.
