Seiko’s Power Design Project Panda launch is a pair of limited-edition quartz chronographs: the white-dial HHK001P1, limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide, and the pink-dial HHK002P1, limited to 2,000. Both use Seiko’s 8T61 movement and share the same listed dimensions and functions. Seiko’s official pages say the design began as a concept shown at its “Incredibly Specialized Watches Exhibition,” but do not establish that the concept dates to 2024.

How the watches turn a panda dial into a panda face
In watchmaking, “panda” commonly describes a light chronograph dial with dark contrasting sub-dials. Seiko’s Power Design Project asks, “Do the world’s panda-style watch dials really resemble pandas?” Its answer is to make the face literal rather than rely on the familiar color pattern.

- Item shape: Round
- Power source type: Solar Powered
- Clasp type: Push Button Deployment Clasp
- The chronograph pushers suggest ears; Seiko says the two recessed pushers operate the chronograph.
- An embossed, radial dial pattern evokes fur, while recessed, drooping sub-dials stand in for the eyes.
- Nose and mouth details sit at six o’clock, and the hands are shaped like bamboo leaves.
- The outer tachymeter is named the “SASAMETER,” from sasa, Japanese for bamboo leaves. Seiko’s explanation says the scale indicates speed based on the time taken to travel one kilometer.
- The case back depicts a panda from behind, with its tail intentionally shown as white.
The packaging follows the two colorways: rolling-panda imagery for the black-and-white watch and a soft pink, newborn-panda inspiration for the pink version. Seiko’s Power Design Project collection page describes these as the second collection and explains the design. The UK white listing also notes rounded pushers inspired by panda ears and a minimized crown positioned at 12 o’clock.
Shared specifications: quartz movement, size and chronograph
Seiko’s UK listings give both models the following specifications. The listed splash-resistant wording is not a swimming or diving rating.

What is established about the concept’s timing?
Seiko’s European boutique says the concept attracted attention at the “Incredibly Specialized Watches Exhibition” and has now become a limited edition. The official pages reviewed do not date that exhibition or identify the original concept with a verified 2024 timeline. The launch is therefore best described as a concept developed through Seiko’s Power Design Project and subsequently released in these limited editions—not as a confirmed 2024 concept watch.

Do not confuse these with the Prospex Speedtimer Panda-style chronographs
“Seiko Panda chronograph” can also refer to conventional contrasting sub-dial designs in the Prospex Speedtimer line. The Power Design Project pair is a different watch: playful animal-themed quartz chronographs, not Speedtimer mechanical models.
In a November 21, 2023 announcement, Seiko introduced the Prospex Speedtimer SRQ047 and limited SRQ049. Their case and bracelet design and panda-style dial drew on a celebrated 1972 Speedtimer. SRQ049 marked the Seiko brand’s 100th anniversary and was limited to 1,000 pieces; it had a blue-grey dial with silver-white sub-dials. Both used the automatic caliber 8R48 chronograph movement with a column wheel and vertical clutch and a 45-hour power reserve. Those details belong to the Speedtimer models, not HHK001P1 or HHK002P1.
