Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Garmin fēnix 9 Pro: The Hidden Costs of Going Phone-Free

Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Garmin fēnix 9 Pro both offer phone-free satellite features, but their costs sit in carrier plans, included periods and inReach subscriptions. Here is what each one actually requires.

The phone-free capability of either watch is paid for in service terms, not only in hardware. Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799 in the US. Its satellite Emergency SOS, Find My and Messages via satellite are included free for two years with activation of Ultra 3 or later, but Find My and Messages via satellite need a carrier plan, SMS rates may apply, and satellite messaging still depends on a paired iPhone that is powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular. Garmin announced the fēnix 9 Pro from $1,099.99 in the US in its August 25, 2026 launch release. Phone-free LTE and satellite communication is available on select inReach models, and it requires an active inReach plan. The price of that plan could not be confirmed from Garmin’s official pages, so the recurring cost on the Garmin side remains the largest unknown.

What each price actually covers

The two headline prices are not comparable totals. One buys a watch with an included satellite trial period and a carrier-dependent messaging layer; the other buys a watch whose satellite communication sits behind a separate subscription. The table below sets out the cost layers as the manufacturers describe them.

Cost layer Apple Watch Ultra 4 Garmin fēnix 9 Pro
US starting hardware price From $799, per Apple’s Ultra 4 product page From $1,099.99, per Garmin’s August 25, 2026 launch release
Included satellite service Emergency SOS, Find My and Messages via satellite free for two years after activation of Ultra 3 or later (Apple’s satellite announcement) Not stated; phone-free communication is described as requiring an active inReach plan
Ongoing connectivity requirement A carrier plan for Find My and Messages via satellite; SMS rates may apply An active inReach plan; plan price not confirmed from Garmin’s official pages
Phone dependency for satellite messaging Paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or an active cellular network, but need not be nearby Not stated in the official pages reviewed for this article
Cost after the included period Not stated in the sources available for this comparison; confirm with your carrier Not applicable as a trial; plan pricing varies by country and was not confirmed

Apple Watch Ultra 4: included time, carrier plan and the iPhone

Two free years of satellite features

Apple’s satellite announcement says Emergency SOS, Find My and Messages via satellite are included at no charge for two years with activation of Ultra 3 or later. For a buyer who expects to use satellite features for a few years, this is the most significant offset against the Ultra 4’s hardware price. It is still a time-limited allowance, and the sources available here do not state what the satellite features will cost once it ends.

Carrier plan and SMS rates

Find My and Messages via satellite require a carrier plan, and SMS rates may apply to satellite text messages. Whether your carrier supports these features, and at what monthly or per-message price, depends on your carrier and country. A buyer who switches carriers or moves abroad should re-check both points before relying on the watch for messaging.

The paired iPhone is still part of the system

Satellite SMS requires the paired iPhone to be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or an active cellular network. The phone does not need to be nearby, but it must be on and online. A hiker who leaves the iPhone switched off in the car to conserve battery would lose satellite messaging, even though the watch itself is working. That is the practical meaning of “phone-free” for this watch: the phone is no longer needed in your pocket, but it is still needed in the system.

Garmin fēnix 9 Pro: which models carry inReach and what the plan adds

Check the exact SKU before buying

Garmin says inReach is available on select fēnix 9 Pro watches, and the announced sizes are 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm. Not every fēnix 9 Pro configuration includes LTE and satellite communication, so the SKU on the box or product page is the thing to verify, not the product family name.

The inReach plan is the prerequisite

Garmin describes an active inReach plan as required for the phone-free communication its watch offers. The official pages reviewed for this article did not show the current price of that plan. Plan pricing and satellite coverage can differ by country, so the cost should be confirmed against Garmin’s inReach information for your own region before you treat the fēnix 9 Pro as a phone-free device.

Satellite is a link you establish, not a switch you flip

Both manufacturers describe satellite use as conditional. The practical constraints are these:

  • Garmin: the watch must establish a satellite link, and Garmin’s instructions tell you to stop moving while that happens.
  • Apple: connection and response times vary with location and site conditions. Apple does not publish a typical response time in the materials reviewed.
  • Apple, messaging: satellite SMS needs the paired iPhone powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or an active cellular network.
  • Both: satellite connectivity is not the same as continuous cellular coverage, and users should plan for delays rather than instant replies.

Battery claims: different modes, not a head-to-head test

The battery figures below are manufacturer estimates for different modes. They are not results from a controlled comparison of the two watches, and they should not be read as a like-for-like ranking.

Watch and mode Claimed battery life Conditions stated by the manufacturer
Apple Watch Ultra 4, normal use Up to 50 hours Apple’s test included 10 hours of cellular connection and 40 hours of iPhone Bluetooth connection
Apple Watch Ultra 4, Low Power Mode Up to 84 hours Apple’s test included on-demand cellular use and 68 hours of iPhone Bluetooth connection over 84 hours
Garmin fēnix 9 Pro (47 mm AMOLED comparison model), smartwatch mode Up to 18 days Figure from Garmin’s compare page; the reviewed sources do not state cellular or satellite use within this figure

Apple says real battery life varies with usage, configuration, network and signal. A watch used for satellite messaging or frequent navigation will not match a figure based on smartwatch mode, whichever brand it comes from.

Navigation and outdoor features

Garmin highlights built-in routable maps, multi-band GPS, training metrics and an LED flashlight for the fēnix 9 Pro. Apple’s product materials emphasize health, fitness, satellite and workout features for the Ultra 4. These are manufacturer descriptions, and this comparison did not include hands-on testing. A buyer whose main use is off-trail navigation should weigh Garmin’s map and GPS claims more heavily, while a buyer who mainly tracks fitness and wants satellite messaging inside an Apple ecosystem should weigh Apple’s health and workout features.

Which watch fits which buyer

  • Choose Apple Watch Ultra 4 if you already use an iPhone, your carrier supports Find My and Messages via satellite, and you are comfortable with a two-year free satellite period followed by a price you have not yet confirmed.
  • Choose Garmin fēnix 9 Pro if you need dedicated satellite communication away from any phone, you have confirmed that your exact SKU includes inReach, and you are willing to pay for an inReach plan you have checked for your country.
  • Do not treat either watch as a guaranteed substitute for a dedicated communication device in every location. Apple’s connection times vary with location and site conditions, and Garmin’s satellite link must be established before communication begins.
  • Do not compare the $799 and $1,099.99 starting prices as total cost of ownership. The Apple figure excludes any carrier charges after the included period, and the Garmin figure excludes the inReach plan.

For most buyers, the decision turns on whether they would rather pay the satellite cost up front in a subscription or later through a carrier, and how far they expect to travel from reliable cellular coverage.
