Apple says background tasks after an update can temporarily affect battery life and recommends waiting a few days. If the drain continues, compare the watch with its own previous performance, check Battery Health, and troubleshoot in stages before arranging service.
watchOS 9.6 was released on July 24, 2023, so this is a historical issue—not a warning about a current update. Contemporary release coverage described it as a bug-fix and security update.
What Apple Watch owners reported after watchOS 9.6
In an Apple Support Community discussion, owners described a sudden reduction in runtime after updating. Their accounts included a full charge lasting only six or seven hours, a reported change from roughly 56 hours to about 12, and a drop from 100% to 10% in six hours. These are individual reports, not controlled measurements or evidence of how many watches were affected.
Reports were mixed: some owners saw little change or improvement after restarting, while others continued to report trouble on later 9.x versions. Similar complaints from non-Ultra owners also appeared in the discussion, so the issue was not clearly exclusive to the Ultra. Accounts of overnight drain, charging trouble, or a watch becoming unresponsive do not establish that those symptoms had the same cause.

What battery life should an Apple Watch Ultra deliver?
Apple rated the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra for up to 36 hours under a defined test profile. That profile included 180 time checks, 180 notifications, 90 minutes of app use, and a 60-minute workout with Bluetooth music playback. Apple’s technical specifications also list up to 18 hours of LTE use. These are estimates under specified conditions, not guarantees for every owner. See Apple’s Apple Watch Ultra technical specifications.
Cellular use, weak signal, GPS workouts, music, screen settings, temperature, apps, and battery aging can all change real-world runtime. A watch lasting less than 36 hours is not automatically defective. A sudden, sustained decline from the same watch’s previous performance under similar use is more useful diagnostically than comparison with Apple’s maximum rating.
Could the battery drain have been temporary?
Yes. Apple says that some tasks continue in the background after a watchOS update and can temporarily affect battery life; its guidance is to wait a few days and check again. Apple’s battery-drain guidance does not identify a specific process as the cause of watchOS 9.6 complaints. Indexing, data processing, app updates, or reconnecting services are possible examples of post-update activity, not confirmed explanations for this particular issue.
If the drain remains severe after several days of ordinary use, do not assume that waiting alone will resolve it. Treat the timing as a clue, not proof that the update caused a specific defect.

- Note the starting and ending battery percentage, including bedtime and morning readings.
- Record workout length and whether GPS, cellular, or music playback was used.
- Note whether the paired iPhone was nearby, whether the watch was warm while idle, and whether charging was interrupted.
- Check Battery Health and record Maximum Capacity.
A large drop while idle or overnight, a full charge lasting a fraction of the watch’s usual runtime, persistent drain after a restart, or new heat or charging problems deserves closer attention. None of these symptoms alone identifies the cause.
Troubleshoot from least disruptive to most disruptive
1. Allow a few days, then restart both devices
After an update, use the watch normally for a few days and observe whether runtime settles. Then restart the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone using each device’s normal power-off control. Restarting is a low-risk check, but it is not a proven fix for the reported issue; owners in contemporary discussions reported different outcomes.
Reserve a force restart for a frozen or unresponsive watch, rather than using it routinely to manage battery life.
2. Check Battery Health
- On the watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- Read Maximum Capacity, which Apple defines as battery capacity relative to when the battery was new.
A high figure does not rule out a software, app, or other hardware problem. A substantially degraded battery can reduce runtime independently of watchOS 9.6. If the watch says Battery Needs Service, contact Apple Support rather than repeatedly resetting it. See Apple’s battery guidance.
3. Test connectivity and display settings
Observe whether the drain changes with the iPhone nearby, during standalone cellular use, or in areas with weak coverage. Keeping the watch near its paired iPhone lets it use Bluetooth; when away from the phone, prefer Wi-Fi to cellular where practical. Weak cellular coverage can increase power use, and long GPS workouts or streaming music can make runtime unlike Apple’s test profile.

To test display and background activity, change one variable at a time:
- Temporarily turn off Always On at Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On.
- Disable unnecessary Background App Refresh and remove complications that refresh frequently.
- Use a simple watch face and temporarily remove recently installed or updated third-party apps.
- Avoid audio through the watch’s built-in speaker; Apple says it can use more power than Bluetooth headphones.
- If connectivity is unnecessary, try Airplane Mode as a short diagnostic comparison.
A community user said closing Fitness and Health apps helped, but described the theory as unscientific. That account is not evidence that closing those apps reliably fixes battery drain.
4. Try Low Power Mode as a diagnostic
On the watch, press the side button to open Control Center, tap the battery percentage button, then turn on Low Power Mode. You can also use Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Apple describes the mode and its effects at Apple’s Low Power Mode page.
Low Power Mode reduces or disables some functions, including Always On and background heart-rate or blood-oxygen measurements; notifications, complications, cellular functions, background refresh, and workout details may also be delayed or limited. If it meaningfully improves runtime, that suggests normal features or connectivity contribute to the drain, but it does not prove a watchOS 9.6 defect. A large loss that continues in Low Power Mode is more concerning.
5. Reduce workout power use only if workouts are the trigger
On watchOS 9.1 and later, supported models including Apple Watch Ultra can use Settings > Workout > Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings. Apple says this applies when Low Power Mode is active for supported outdoor walking, running, or hiking workouts. Less frequent readings can reduce accuracy or detail, and some alerts, splits, segments, and current-pace information may be unavailable. This setting is not a fix for drain while the watch is idle. Details are in Apple’s battery guidance.

6. Unpair and pair again only after simpler checks
Unpairing may help if synchronization or configuration data is involved, but it is disruptive and does not guarantee improvement. If you try it:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Back up the iPhone and keep it and the watch together.
- Unpair the watch through the Watch app.
- Pair again and test with a minimal configuration before reinstalling apps or restoring settings, if practical.
- If battery life is stable, add apps and complications back gradually to see whether a change coincides with renewed drain.
Community reports include both unsuccessful attempts and claims of improvement after re-pairing; neither outcome establishes a reliable fix. The discussion is anecdotal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the results
These are diagnostic clues, not definitive tests:
- More consistent with a software or configuration issue: the change began just after the update, battery health appears strong, drain varies with cellular or GPS use, or behavior improves after a restart or a clean setup.
- More concerning for battery or hardware trouble: the decline began before 9.6, Maximum Capacity is substantially reduced, the watch shuts down at moderate percentages, charging is intermittent, or heat and drain persist across settings and software versions.
Fast discharge, a battery percentage that appears inaccurate, interrupted charging, and a watch that will not power on are separate symptoms; the community reports do not establish one shared cause for them. Turning off Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit is not a demonstrated remedy for this issue, and Apple warns that disabling charge optimization can increase battery wear. See Apple’s guidance.
When to contact Apple
Contact Apple Support or arrange service if Battery Health reports Battery Needs Service, the watch loses power extremely quickly after several days, becomes hot while idle, will not charge or power on, or the problem remains after the less disruptive checks and re-pairing. If you seek service, describe the before-and-after runtime, update timing, Battery Health reading, charging behavior, and the conditions under which the drain occurs. Repair cost and coverage depend on country, warranty, AppleCare+ status, and device condition; check with Apple for your situation.
