Apple wins for iPhone integration, calls, messages, apps, payments, safety tools and polished everyday usability. Garmin generally wins for battery life, training depth, recovery metrics, multisport features, physical controls and outdoor navigation.
The right choice depends on whether you want a smartwatch that also tracks fitness or a fitness watch that also handles useful smartwatch tasks. For most iPhone owners, the Apple Watch Series 11 is the best all-rounder. Serious runners and multisport athletes should look first at the Garmin Forerunner 570 or 970, while outdoor users should consider the fēnix 8 Pro, Enduro 3 or Instinct 3.

Apple Watch and Garmin are not equivalent product families
Apple offers three principal models with progressively more health, durability and battery features. Garmin sells specialized lines designed for different types of users:

That means an Apple Watch SE 3 should not be compared directly with a premium Garmin fēnix or Forerunner 970 without accounting for their different prices and purposes. Battery, maps, sensors, sport profiles and training features vary substantially between Garmin models. Use Garmin’s official comparison tool for model-specific details.
Fitness and workout tracking
Apple Watch: simpler, broad and excellent for everyday exercise
Apple Watch tracks running, walking, cycling, swimming, hiking, strength training and many other workouts. Depending on the activity and model, its Workout app can show heart rate, pace, distance, elevation, cadence, power, splits and route data. Automatic workout detection and straightforward workout screens make it easy to start exercising without configuring a large number of options.
Its major advantage is the connection between the Workout app, Apple Health and Apple Fitness, supplemented by a large third-party app ecosystem. For casual runners, gym users and people who mainly want reliable activity trends, Apple Watch is often easier to understand than a performance-focused Garmin.

Garmin: more context for structured training
Garmin typically offers more sport profiles and deeper training tools. On compatible models, these can include training load, training status, training readiness, recovery time, race predictions, daily suggested workouts, structured plans, running dynamics and multisport or triathlon modes. PacePro-style pacing tools and course features are available on applicable models.
Garmin Connect is built around longer-term training analysis, so it is particularly useful when a runner is preparing for a race or an athlete wants to understand how workouts, sleep and recovery affect performance.
“Garmin tracks fitness better” is too broad. Garmin usually provides more training-oriented metrics and coaching context; Apple Watch often provides excellent basic tracking with a simpler interface. The difference matters most for structured running, cycling, endurance, multisport and outdoor training. It is smaller for walking, casual running, gym workouts and general activity.

GPS results also vary by watch, settings, environment and user. In one Tom’s Guide London Marathon test, an Apple Watch Ultra 3 and a Garmin recorded very similar distances, with the Apple Watch fractionally closer to the official distance. That is evidence from one test—not proof that either brand always has better GPS. Read the test conditions.

Garmin is usually the stronger choice for athletes who want the watch to influence their training decisions. Supported models can combine recent workouts, sleep, heart-rate variability and other signals into features such as training readiness, recovery time, Body Battery and training status. These are useful ways to spot trends and avoid stacking hard sessions on top of poor recovery.
Apple Watch provides heart-rate trends, cardio-fitness estimates, sleep stages, Vitals, activity rings and health data in Apple’s ecosystem. It can be a very good health and activity companion, but its experience is less centered on the specialized training dashboard found on higher-end Garmin watches.
Charging also affects sleep tracking. If an Apple Watch is charged overnight, it cannot record that night’s data. Charge it during a shower, at a desk, during a meal or immediately after waking. Garmin’s longer endurance makes continuous overnight wear easier, although the required charging interval still depends on the model and settings.
Battery life: Garmin’s clearest advantage
Apple advertises up to 24 hours of normal use or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode for Series 11. Apple rates Ultra 3 for 42 hours. In practice, always-on display use, GPS, LTE, music, notifications and sleep tracking can shorten those figures. Most Series 11 owners should expect daily or near-daily charging, while Ultra 3 reduces—but does not eliminate—that routine.

Garmin’s range is much broader. Garmin says the vívoactive 6 can last up to nine days in smartwatch mode, and some specialized devices are positioned for week- or week-plus endurance. Depending on the model, display, GPS mode and solar assistance, a Garmin may last several days or multiple weeks.

- WHY APPLE WATCH SERIES 10 — Bigger display with up to 30 percent more screen area.* A thinner, lighter, and more comfortable design.* Advanced health and fitness features provide invaluable insights.* Safety features connect you to help when you need it.* Faster charging gives you 80 percent battery in about 30 minutes.*
- ADVANCED HEALTH INSIGHTS — Take an ECG anytime.* Get notifications if you have high or low heart rate or an irregular heart rhythm.* Understand your menstrual cycle and get retrospective ovulation estimates.* See overnight health metrics like heart rate, respiratory rate, and more with the Vitals app.* Track sleep and get notifications if Apple Watch detects signs of sleep apnea.*
- A POWERFUL FITNESS PARTNER — Measure all the ways you move with Activity Rings, which are customizable to match your lifestyle. Get advanced metrics for a range of workouts with the Workout app. Track the intensity of your workouts with training load. Use depth and water temperature sensors for your aquatic adventures. And Apple Watch comes with three months of Apple Fitness+ free.*
- STAY CONNECTED — Send a text, take a call, listen to music and podcasts, use Siri, and get notifications on the go. Apple Watch Series 10 (GPS) works with your iPhone or Wi-Fi to keep you connected.
- INNOVATIVE SAFETY FEATURES — Fall Detection and Crash Detection can connect you with emergency services in the event of a hard fall or a severe car crash. Emergency SOS lets you call for help with the press of a button.* Check In automatically notifies a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.*
These are not directly comparable maximums. Battery life changes substantially with:
- Normal smartwatch use versus GPS recording.
- Standard GPS versus multiband or high-accuracy GPS.
- AMOLED always-on display settings.
- LTE, music playback and frequent notifications.
- Pulse-ox monitoring and other sensors.
- Solar exposure and the watch’s specified solar mode.
If you hate charging or want uninterrupted sleep and recovery data, Garmin is the safer choice. If you prefer Apple’s ecosystem and can build charging into your routine, Series 11 or Ultra 3 remains practical.
Smartwatch features and daily use
Why Apple Watch feels more like a smartwatch
Apple Watch has the stronger everyday smartwatch experience for iPhone owners. It handles calls, messages, notifications, Apple Pay, Siri, music controls, Find My integration and a broad selection of third-party apps. GPS and GPS + Cellular versions are available, though cellular service requires a compatible carrier plan and may add a recurring cost. Apple’s current models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later; they do not work with Android. See Apple’s compatibility requirements.

What Garmin does well
Garmin watches generally show notifications with both iPhone and Android through Garmin Connect. Supported models may offer Garmin Pay, music storage and playback, watch-face customization and limited message replies. Garmin’s physical buttons are also valuable when hands are sweaty, wet or covered by gloves.
Garmin’s software and app ecosystem is narrower than Apple’s, and some features—especially notification actions, message replies and voice functions—depend on whether the watch is paired with Android or iPhone. Garmin is not an Apple Watch with a larger battery; it is a sports-focused platform with selected smartwatch features.
Health features and medical limits
Apple Watch and Garmin can monitor heart rate, sleep, activity, respiration and other signals, but capabilities differ by model and country. Apple’s supported models may offer ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature sensing, Vitals, cycle tracking and—where approved—hypertension-related notifications. Garmin’s supported models may offer Body Battery, HRV status, sleep score, stress, Health Snapshot, pulse oximetry, ECG and training-readiness features.

Do not assume every watch has every feature. ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications and irregular-rhythm functions can depend on the country, age, hardware, software and regulatory approval.
Medical disclaimer: These devices are not substitutes for clinical diagnosis. Calories, stress, recovery, readiness, sleep scores and VO2 max are algorithmic estimates and are best treated as useful trends, not laboratory measurements. A 2026 study found that calorie-expenditure error varied by wearable brand and worsened with higher body fat, reinforcing the need to avoid absolute accuracy claims. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.GPS, maps and outdoor use
Apple Watch offers route recording, GPS, Apple Maps and third-party navigation. Ultra 3 adds a larger, more rugged design and Emergency SOS via satellite, subject to availability and conditions. It is a capable outdoor smartwatch, especially for iPhone users who value connectivity and safety features.
Higher-end Garmin watches usually offer a broader outdoor toolkit: downloaded maps, route guidance, elevation and course features, long GPS endurance, rugged construction and solar variants on selected lines. Buttons are useful in rain, cold weather and gloves. However, not every Garmin has maps, multiband GPS, solar charging or advanced navigation. Confirm the exact model before buying.
Design, display and controls
Apple Watch uses a rectangular, touch-first interface. Garmin watches are mostly round and range from bright AMOLED screens to lower-power MIP displays. AMOLED Garmin models can look more like conventional smartwatches, but MIP and solar-equipped models may offer better endurance.
Case materials vary from polymer and aluminum to stainless steel, titanium and sapphire-equipped designs. Consider case size, weight, water resistance, formal dive capability, sunlight visibility and sleep comfort—not just specifications. A large fēnix or Ultra may be durable but uncomfortable on a small wrist, while physical buttons can be easier than a touchscreen during hard workouts.

Price and value: compare equivalent tiers
The fairest comparisons are between watches with similar purposes:
- Apple Watch SE 3 vs Garmin vívoactive 6: entry-level Apple smartwatch integration versus longer battery life and a fitness-first experience.
- Apple Watch Series 11 vs Garmin Venu 4: mainstream smartwatch and health features versus a lifestyle-oriented Garmin with greater endurance.
- Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Garmin Forerunner 970 or fēnix 8 Pro: Apple safety, cellular and ecosystem features versus specialized training, navigation and endurance.
Garmin’s premium models can cost substantially more than mainstream Apple Watch models, so do not pay for maps, sensors or race tools you will not use. Also account for Apple cellular service, replacement bands, external heart-rate straps, cycling sensors, third-party apps and any optional training or mapping services.
Which should you buy?
Choose Apple Watch if you:
- Own an iPhone and want the best integration with it.
- Care about calls, texts, apps, payments, Siri and notifications as much as workouts.
- Prefer a simple, polished workout experience.
- Want Apple’s health and safety ecosystem.
- Mostly walk, run casually, exercise at the gym or track general wellness.
- Accept charging daily or every couple of days.
Best default: Apple Watch Series 11. Choose the SE 3 to reduce cost if you can live without some advanced health features. Choose Ultra 3 if you want a larger, more rugged Apple Watch with better battery life and outdoor safety tools.

- Prioritize battery life and uninterrupted overnight wear.
- Train for running races, cycling events, swimming or triathlons.
- Want training load, readiness, recovery, race prediction or structured workouts.
- Need long GPS endurance, navigation or rugged outdoor hardware.
- Use Android or want flexibility between phone platforms.
- Prefer physical buttons during exercise.
Best starting points: vívoactive 6 for general fitness and wellness; Venu 4 for a more lifestyle-oriented design; Forerunner 570 or 970 for running and triathlon; and fēnix 8 Pro, Enduro 3 or Instinct 3 for demanding outdoor use.
Bottom line
There is no universal winner. Apple Watch is the best smartwatch and the best iPhone companion. Garmin is the better fitness and training platform for many serious athletes, and the clear battery-life winner. Ultra 3 is Apple’s strongest compromise for outdoor-minded iPhone users, but it does not erase Garmin’s advantage in specialized training and endurance. Choose the model family that matches how you exercise, how often you charge, and how much smartwatch functionality you actually need.
