Sleep Score is broadly available on watches that support watchOS 26, including the Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, second-generation SE and original Ultra. Hypertension Notifications are more restricted: Apple requires a Series 9 or later, or an Ultra 2 or later.
There is also an important 2026 qualification. Although watchOS 26 supports models as old as the Series 6, Apple’s announced watchOS 27 compatibility list starts with the Series 9, Ultra 2 and SE 3. Older watches can gain some new features now, but their remaining software runway is shorter than the watchOS 26 compatibility list suggests.

Apple Watch compatibility at a glance
watchOS compatibility and feature compatibility are not the same thing. A watch may install watchOS 26 while lacking the sensors, processing capability, regional authorization or other requirements for a particular feature.

Sleep Score is the main older-watch health upgrade
Sleep Score summarizes sleep quality using several aspects of overnight data, including sleep duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions or sleep stages. It can be viewed in the Health app and, depending on the supported configuration, through Apple Watch surfaces such as the Smart Stack or a watch-face complication. Apple’s watchOS 26 overview describes the software update and its supported features; current compatibility reporting also places Sleep Score on Series 6 and later, second-generation SE and later, and all Ultra models.
To use it, you generally need:
- An Apple Watch compatible with watchOS 26.
- A compatible iPhone running iOS 26.
- Sleep tracking configured in Apple’s Health and Watch apps.
- Enough battery life for the watch to remain on your wrist overnight.
Sleep Score is a consumer wellness metric, not a clinical diagnosis. It does not replace a sleep study, medical evaluation or advice from a qualified professional. Scores may also look different from the results of clinical testing because they are calculated from watch-based data rather than the full set of measurements used in polysomnography.
Hypertension Notifications are not coming to every watchOS 26 model
Hypertension Notifications are the clearest example of the hardware divide. Apple supports the feature on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. The Series 8, original Ultra and every older model can run watchOS 26, but none qualifies for this feature.

The feature analyzes optical-heart-sensor data over a 30-day evaluation period and looks for patterns that may be associated with chronic high blood pressure. It does not take an on-demand blood-pressure reading, display a continuous blood-pressure number or replace a blood-pressure cuff.

Apple’s stated requirements include:
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.
- iPhone 11 or later.
- The latest compatible versions of iOS and watchOS.
- Wrist Detection enabled.
- Availability of the feature in your country or region.
- Being at least 22 years old.
- No previous hypertension diagnosis.
- No pregnancy or active pregnancy recorded in Health.
If you receive a notification, confirm your blood pressure with an appropriate cuff and contact a healthcare professional. The notification is a prompt to investigate a possible pattern, not a diagnosis. Apple publishes additional details in its Hypertension Notifications support guide and validation material.
What each older model actually gets
Apple Watch Series 6
The Series 6 can install watchOS 26 and may receive broad software features such as Sleep Score, updated sleep views and supported Workout app changes. It does not receive Hypertension Notifications, and its paired iPhone and region must still meet the requirements for individual features. It is also absent from Apple’s announced watchOS 27 list. Update it if the battery remains reliable and you mainly want the watchOS 26 software; do not buy one expecting Apple’s next major update.
Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8
Both models can receive watchOS 26, including supported sleep and workout improvements. Neither receives Hypertension Notifications because Apple’s requirement begins with Series 9. Both are excluded from the announced watchOS 27 compatibility list, so they make more sense as inexpensive short-term purchases than as long-term software bets.

Apple Watch Series 9 and Series 10
These models receive watchOS 26 and qualify for Hypertension Notifications, provided the iPhone, software, region and personal eligibility requirements are satisfied. They are also on the watchOS 27 compatibility list. For buyers who specifically want the hypertension feature without paying for the newest flagship or an Ultra, a Series 9 or Series 10 is the relevant starting point.

Second-generation Apple Watch SE
The SE (2nd generation) supports watchOS 26 and broad software features such as Sleep Score, subject to the normal requirements. It does not qualify for Hypertension Notifications and is not on the announced watchOS 27 list. Its value depends heavily on price, battery condition and whether you need premium health hardware.
Apple Watch Ultra
The original Ultra supports watchOS 26 and can receive supported software-based sleep and workout changes. It does not qualify for Hypertension Notifications; Apple requires Ultra 2 or later. The original Ultra is also absent from the watchOS 27 compatibility list, despite its premium construction and long battery life.
Apple Watch Ultra 2
The Ultra 2 supports watchOS 26, Hypertension Notifications when all prerequisites are met, and watchOS 27. Its larger battery can also make overnight sleep tracking more practical than on an older watch with worn battery cells. The trade-off is its larger, heavier design and higher cost compared with standard models.
Workout Buddy has extra requirements
Workout Buddy is a watchOS 26 fitness feature that provides spoken, personalized motivation based on workout data and fitness history. Apple says it can draw on information such as heart rate, pace, distance, Activity-ring progress and milestones.

- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*

It should not be treated as a feature that automatically works on every watchOS 26-compatible watch. Availability depends on more than the watch model, including:
- An Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
- Compatible iPhone, Apple Watch and operating-system versions.
- A supported language, with availability initially focused on English.
- Bluetooth headphones or another supported audio setup.
- Region, account and workout-specific restrictions.
Check Apple’s current feature-availability documentation before buying an older watch specifically for Workout Buddy. The watchOS 26 update also includes redesigned health and fitness interfaces and Workout app changes, but individual features may have their own limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a software update cannot add every health feature
New software can change how existing data is analyzed and presented, which is why Sleep Score and interface improvements can reach older models. It cannot add a missing sensor or change a model’s regulatory status.
Feature restrictions may reflect:
- Optical or electrical sensors available on particular models.
- Processing requirements.
- Battery and performance demands.
- Apple Intelligence running through a compatible iPhone.
- Country-specific regulatory approval.
That is why “supports watchOS 26” should be read as an operating-system statement, not a promise that the watch gets every feature Apple highlights with the Series 11, Ultra 3 or SE 3.

watchOS 27 changes the upgrade calculation
As of August 18, 2026, Apple has announced watchOS 27 but described it as arriving in fall. Its announced compatibility list includes:
- Apple Watch Series 9, 10 and 11.
- Apple Watch SE 3.
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3.
Series 6–8, the second-generation SE and the original Ultra are not included. Based on that announced list, watchOS 26 may be the final major update for those models. They are not obsolete: they remain capable watches and can gain meaningful watchOS 26 features. But anyone buying one in 2026 should account for the shorter support horizon.
Apple says watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27. Do not assume that every watchOS 26 feature will have identical requirements, or that an iPhone compatible with one feature will unlock all others.

Keep and update your current watch if:
- It is on the watchOS 26 compatibility list.
- You mainly want Sleep Score, sleep improvements or redesigned workout software.
- Its battery can reliably support overnight tracking.
- Your iPhone supports the required iOS version.
- You do not specifically need Hypertension Notifications or watchOS 27.
Upgrade if:
- You specifically want Hypertension Notifications. The minimum listed tier is Series 9 or Ultra 2.
- You own a Series 6–8, second-generation SE or original Ultra and want a longer software runway.
- Battery degradation causes missed sleep data or frequent charging.
- You want watchOS 27 features and newer Apple Intelligence capabilities.
- A used Series 9, Series 10 or Ultra 2 costs only modestly more than an older discounted model.
For a new purchase, the Series 9 is the lowest relevant tier for Hypertension Notifications and watchOS 27 support. The Series 10 offers newer standard-watch hardware, while the Series 11 is the current standard flagship. The SE 3 is the lower-cost watchOS 27 option, but SE models may omit premium health hardware. The Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 make more sense for buyers prioritizing battery life, durability and outdoor use.
A refurbished Series 9, Series 10 or Ultra 2 may be a better match than a new flagship if the goal is specifically Hypertension Notifications. Before buying used, check battery health, Activation Lock status, cellular compatibility, return terms, warranty and regional eligibility. Apple’s Certified Refurbished store and Apple Watch comparison page are useful starting points. Prices and discounts change, so compare current offers rather than relying on an old figure.
What to check when a feature is missing
- Identify the exact watch model. Series 8 and the original Ultra, for example, support watchOS 26 but not Hypertension Notifications.
- Check the iPhone. Hypertension Notifications require an iPhone 11 or later; other features can have different requirements.
- Update both devices. Install the latest compatible iOS and watchOS versions.
- Check region and language. Health and Apple Intelligence features are not universally available.
- Review eligibility. Hypertension Notifications include age, pregnancy and previous-diagnosis restrictions.
- Enable Wrist Detection and permissions. Review Health data access and Watch app settings.
- Allow for evaluation or setup time. Hypertension Notifications use a 30-day evaluation period rather than an instant reading.
- Check battery health. A technically compatible watch may still miss overnight data if it cannot last through the night.
Do not confuse these features with Blood Oxygen
Blood Oxygen availability is a separate issue from the new watchOS 26 features. In the United States, Apple introduced a redesigned Blood Oxygen experience for certain watches through iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, but availability depends on the model, market and legal circumstances. It is not accurate to assume Blood Oxygen works on every U.S. Apple Watch. See Apple’s U.S. Blood Oxygen update for the applicable caveats.
