Hold the power button, usually LIGHT, for up to 30 seconds, restart the watch, and give it a reliable charge. If it starts normally, sync immediately and update it with Garmin Connect or Garmin Express.
If the loop continues, use the exact master-reset procedure for your model. Garmin button combinations differ across fēnix, Forerunner, Venu, vívoactive, Instinct, Epix, Descent, quatix and other families, and a factory reset can erase unsynchronized data and settings.

What the blue triangle means
The blue triangle is normally part of the Garmin startup animation. The fault is that the watch never progresses from startup to the normal time screen.
Recommended Free Tools
Owners commonly use “blue triangle boot loop” or “blue triangle of death” to describe several different symptoms:
#1 Best Overall
- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
- Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
- Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
- Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
- A single slow startup after an update.
- A triangle that remains frozen indefinitely.
- A repeating triangle, vibration, black screen and restart cycle.
- A watch that reaches the time screen but crashes when GPS, maps, music or an activity is launched.
- A watch that stays on only while connected to a charger.
These are symptoms, not a universal Garmin diagnosis. A major reported cluster was associated with failed or corrupted software involving GPS or map functions, but similar behavior can result from other software failures, power instability or hardware faults. Garmin’s general troubleshooting guidance does not say that every blue-triangle loop has one cause. See Garmin’s frozen or rebooting-device guidance and reporting from Engadget and Android Authority.
Try a forced restart first
- Press and hold the power button—usually LIGHT—for up to 30 seconds.
- Release it as soon as the watch actually powers off.
- Press the power button again to restart.
Make sure the watch is off rather than simply between automatic restarts. A forced shutdown is the least destructive recovery attempt, although Garmin warns that unsynchronized steps, the current time and other local information may be lost.
Do not keep holding the power button after shutdown if you are about to begin a model-specific reset sequence. The timing of button release matters.
Check charging before attempting recovery
Use the original Garmin cable, or another known-good cable that is compatible with the watch, and connect it to a reliable USB power source. Check that the charging contacts are clean and dry. A low battery or poor contact can make recovery appear to fail, although Garmin’s support material does not establish low battery as the general cause of the blue-triangle problem.
If the watch is unusually hot, swollen, smells abnormal or shows physical battery damage, stop charging and using it. That is a service issue, not a software troubleshooting step.

If it boots, sync and update immediately
Do not assume the problem is fixed merely because the watch face appears. First preserve what you can, then update the software.
- Open Garmin Connect and sync the watch.
- Connect the watch to a computer with its USB charging cable.
- Open Garmin Express.
- Select the watch and install available updates. Choose Install or Install All when shown.
- Leave the watch connected until the update and any restart have completed.
Garmin Express is Garmin’s official desktop route for updates and can be useful when Garmin Connect cannot complete a phone-based connection. Some watches also update through Garmin Connect or Wi-Fi, but a computer connection gives you another recovery path.
After updating, restart the watch once, pair it again if necessary, and test a short activity. A successful recovery means more than seeing the watch face: it should sync, complete the update, remain stable after disconnection and survive a brief GPS activity without rebooting.
If it still loops, find the exact reset procedure
A master reset is appropriate when the watch cannot complete startup, repeatedly reboots, or remains unusable after a forced restart. Before doing it, identify the exact model and open its instructions on Garmin Support. Do not use a button sequence copied from a different Garmin family.
Button labels, timing, vibration or beep cues, recovery menus and reset behavior vary between models. A procedure for a fēnix 5, Forerunner or older button-based watch may not apply to a Venu or vívoactive. Newer devices can also use different power menus and touchscreen controls.

Example: fēnix 5 reset sequence
This is an illustration of a Garmin-published procedure, not a universal instruction for every Garmin watch:
- Ensure the watch is powered off. Hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds if necessary.
- Press LIGHT to power it on.
- When the Garmin triangle appears, press and hold START/STOP and BACK.
- After the first beep, release START/STOP.
- After the second beep, release BACK.
- Allow the watch to complete the factory reset and enter initial setup.
Garmin says this process erases settings, the user profile, records, activity history, Connect IQ content and other data. Confirm the instructions for your exact fēnix 5 variant before proceeding.
Example: quatix 8 reset sequence
The quatix 8 demonstrates why model-specific instructions are essential:
- Power off the watch.
- Press and hold LIGHT until the control wheel appears.
- Select Power Off, then press START/STOP to confirm.
- Press and hold LIGHT to power it on.
- Release LIGHT when the blue triangle appears.
- Wait five seconds.
- Press and hold START/STOP and BACK together.
- After the first vibration, release START/STOP.
- After the second vibration, release BACK.
Use Garmin’s quatix 8 instructions and do not substitute this sequence for a Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive, Instinct, Epix or Descent procedure.
What a factory reset deletes
A reset can recover some software states, but it is not a guaranteed repair and it removes local information. Expect to reconfigure:

- Unsynchronized activities, recent steps, settings and device totals.
- User profiles, activity profiles, data fields, alerts and preferences.
- Connect IQ apps and watch faces.
- Sensors, Wi-Fi, music, maps and payment features where applicable.
- Some model-specific features, including ECG setup where supported.
Activities and health data already synchronized to your Garmin Connect account should generally remain there. That does not guarantee that every metric, setting or device total will be restored. Garmin says Connect IQ apps are not included in its manual settings backup and may need to be downloaded again. An ECG app may also require setup again after a factory reset. See Garmin’s backup and restore guidance and ECG setup guidance.
If the watch can reach its menus, sync before resetting. On compatible devices, Garmin also documents copying relevant folders and FIT files from the Garmin drive, including files associated with courses, locations, records, settings, sports profiles, totals and weight. File structures vary, and some MTP devices may not mount normally on macOS; Garmin recommends a Windows computer for certain MTP devices.
What to do after a successful reset
- Complete the language and basic setup screens.
- Pair the watch with Garmin Connect.
- Connect it to Garmin Express and install every available update.
- Reinstall Connect IQ apps and watch faces.
- Reconfigure activities, data fields, alerts, sensors, Wi-Fi, music, maps and payment features as needed.
- Reactivate features such as ECG where the model supports them.
- Restart once and test a short GPS activity.
Updating before extensive customization makes it easier to tell whether the watch is stable and avoids spending time rebuilding settings on software that may still be faulty.

Phone pairing and computer recognition are separate. A watch that is not visible in Garmin Connect may still be recoverable through Garmin Express, and failure to mount as a normal removable drive does not by itself prove that it is permanently unusable.

If it crashes only when GPS or an activity starts
A watch that reaches the time screen but reboots when launching GPS may have a problem involving GPS data, maps, an activity file or another software component. Community reports and media coverage have connected some incidents with GPS or map-update behavior, but that is reported evidence—not a universal Garmin-confirmed diagnosis.
- Stop repeatedly launching the activity.
- Sync accessible data.
- Install available updates through Garmin Express.
- If the crash remains, perform the model-specific reset.
- After setup and updating, test one short, low-risk activity.
- If it fails again, record the model, software version, activity type, map region and exact sequence before contacting Garmin.
Do not delete update files casually
Community workarounds have mentioned deleting files from locations such as Garmin/RemoteSW after a failed update. That is not a universal official instruction. The wrong file, folder or model-specific procedure could make recovery harder. Only attempt file deletion when Garmin documents it for your exact device or Garmin Support gives you those instructions.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Garmin
Contact Garmin rather than repeating resets if:
- The exact master reset fails.
- Garmin Express cannot recognize the watch after trying another cable, port and computer.
- The loop returns after a clean reset and complete update.
- The watch crashes repeatedly during GPS or ordinary use.
- There is heat, swelling, liquid intrusion, damaged contacts or other physical damage.
Garmin’s U.S. fitness and outdoor products generally carry a one-year manufacturer warranty from the original purchase date, but terms vary by product, region and condition. Coverage may exclude accidental or liquid damage, normal battery degradation, unauthorized modification or purchases outside the applicable terms. Check Garmin’s warranty and repair information and keep proof of purchase. Do not assume Garmin will provide a free replacement.
