Start with the phone you use. If it’s an iPhone, choose an Apple Watch: Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 do not support iOS. If you use Android, the Galaxy Watch9 is Samsung’s everyday option, while the larger Ultra2 is aimed at demanding outdoor and sport use. Some Samsung health features require a compatible Galaxy phone, even when the watch can pair with another Android phone.
Check phone compatibility first
The phone is the deciding factor, not a small feature difference. Apple Watch is built around iPhone; current Galaxy watches require Android and exclude iPhone.

Using a non-Samsung Android phone?
Recent Galaxy watches can pair with Android phones from other manufacturers, subject to compatibility. Pairing does not mean every feature is available: Samsung says some personalized health insights, Galaxy AI health features such as Running Coach, and Samsung Health Monitor features require a compatible Galaxy phone. The listed Health Monitor features include ECG, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification, and Sleep Apnea. Eligibility and availability can vary by feature and region. Samsung’s compatibility announcement explains the distinction.

Apple Watch Series 12: the mainstream iPhone choice
Series 12 is the current Apple reference for this comparison. Apple presents Watch as an iPhone companion: for example, you can create a custom route in Maps on iPhone and download it to Watch, or see cycling metrics on iPhone as a Live Activity. Those connected features are most relevant if you already use an iPhone. See Apple’s Watch overview.

Galaxy Watch9: Samsung’s everyday Android option
Samsung positions Galaxy Watch9 for everyday health management and offers 40 mm and 44 mm case sizes. Its Samsung Health features are grouped around Activity, Mindfulness, Nutrition, Sleep, and Vitals. Samsung describes overnight measurements that use heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature, and blood oxygen saturation to build a personalized baseline. These are wellness features and measurements, not a clinical diagnosis or proof of greater accuracy than Apple Watch. Samsung’s product overview.
Galaxy Watch Ultra2: for a larger, more specialized watch
Samsung positions Ultra2 for high-intensity sports and outdoor activity. The company lists a 47 mm case, an 800 mAh battery, display brightness up to 5,000 nits, Trail Run information, and water- and dive-related features. These specifications and features describe the product’s intended use; they do not establish real-world GPS accuracy, endurance, or safety superiority. Its size and specialized positioning make it a less direct rival to a mainstream Apple Watch than Galaxy Watch9. Samsung’s product overview.

Compare the things that affect your choice
Phone integration
Choose Apple Watch if you want a watch that works with iPhone features and Apple’s connected services. Choose Galaxy Watch if you use Android; a Galaxy phone is the better fit if you want access to the full set of Samsung health and ecosystem features described for the watch. Neither current Galaxy model is an option for an iPhone owner, and Apple Watch is not an Android watch.
Size and use
Galaxy Watch9 comes in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes for an everyday-use focus. Ultra2 is 47 mm and is designed for buyers prioritizing outdoor and high-intensity sport features. Compare the actual case size and intended use rather than treating every model from one brand as interchangeable.

Battery claims are not a cross-brand runtime test
Samsung reports a 390 mAh battery for Galaxy Watch9 and says that is 20% more capacity than previous generations. It reports 800 mAh for Ultra2. Capacity is not the same as time between charges, and these figures do not establish that either Galaxy watch lasts longer than a particular Apple Watch. The cited manufacturer information does not provide a controlled, like-for-like cross-brand battery test.
Health features need careful interpretation
Both product families offer health and fitness features, but a list of sensors or metrics is not evidence that one watch measures more accurately. Samsung’s feature access may depend on a compatible Galaxy phone, eligibility, and region. Treat watch readings and scores as consumer wellness information rather than a substitute for medical advice or diagnosis.
