To set up a replacement smartwatch, first identify whether you’re changing the watch, the phone, or both. Then update and charge the devices, confirm you can sign in to the required accounts, and follow the manufacturer’s transfer or restore process. Don’t erase or trade in the old watch until the new one is paired and its data has finished restoring or syncing.
First, identify what you’re replacing
Moving an existing watch to a new phone is different from restoring a backup onto a new watch. The right steps also depend on the watch brand and the phone it supports. The procedures below cover Apple Watch with iPhone and Google Pixel Watch with Android; they do not establish a universal way to move data between different watch brands.

- New watch, same phone: Check whether a backup of the old watch is available, then restore it during the new watch’s setup.
- Same watch, new phone: Use the maker’s phone-transfer workflow rather than treating the watch as a new device.
- New watch and new phone: Check both devices’ compatibility and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific combination. The cited Apple and Google instructions do not document cross-brand migration.
Prepare before starting
Keep the old watch available until setup, restoration, and syncing are complete. Before you unpair, reset, or trade it in, work through these checks:
- Confirm the exact watch model and the phone it will pair with, and check the maker’s current compatibility guidance.
- Install available updates as directed. Apple says to update the old iPhone and Apple Watch before moving the watch to a new iPhone. Google recommends current app and watch software for Pixel Watch setup.
- Charge the watch and phones, enable Bluetooth, and make sure the devices have internet access. Apple’s new-iPhone process requires the watch and both iPhones to have at least 50% charge, with Wi-Fi enabled on both phones.
- Have the relevant account credentials and watch passcode ready. Apple lists the Apple Account and password and watch passcode for its new-iPhone process; Pixel Watch setup requires a Google Account.
- If replacing a Pixel Watch, turn on backup ahead of time. Google says a backup may take up to a few days, so don’t wait until the old watch is about to be reset.
- For an LTE watch, check separately how the carrier and phone number will be handled.
Set up or restore a new Apple Watch
Apple’s setup flow pairs an Apple Watch with an iPhone. Keep the unlocked iPhone and watch close together, with Bluetooth on and the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service.

- When the setup prompt appears on the iPhone, follow it and scan the animation shown on the watch. If scanning doesn’t work, choose manual pairing in the setup flow.
- When prompted, choose to set up the watch as new or restore a previous watch backup, if that option is available.
- Follow the prompts for Apple Account sign-in, passcode, settings, and optional features.
- Keep the watch and iPhone near each other while the remaining information syncs in the background.

Move an Apple Watch to a new iPhone
Prepare the old iPhone and watch before pairing with the new phone. Apple says to update both first. If you use iCloud, check that Health is turned on; if you make a computer backup, encrypt it to include Health and Activity content.

- On the old iPhone, confirm that the Health setting is enabled in iCloud, or make an encrypted computer backup if you’re using a computer.
- Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch, and make sure you have the Apple Account password and watch passcode.
- Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi and charge the watch and both phones to at least 50%.
- Follow Apple’s new-iPhone pairing process and keep the devices together while setup and syncing finish.
Apple’s full prerequisites and process are in Pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone. The Health and Activity safeguard matters because a backup that isn’t encrypted on a computer may not include that content.
Set up a new Pixel Watch or restore its backup
For Pixel Watch, Google’s setup checklist includes the charging cable supplied with the watch, a Google Account, a compatible Android phone with internet access, and the latest Google Pixel Watch app. Google also recommends sufficient charge, Bluetooth, location permission, current app and firmware, and attaching the band you plan to use.

- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app on the Android phone and turn on Bluetooth and location permission.
- Open the app and follow its pairing and setup steps, signing in with your Google Account when asked.
- If a saved backup is available, select it when the setup flow offers restoration.
- Keep the watch charged and connected as setup and syncing proceed.

If you’re replacing the watch but keeping the same phone, enable backup on the old watch in advance. Google says the watch should be connected to Wi-Fi and on its charger for backup, and that the process may take up to a few days. When adding the new watch in the Pixel Watch app, choose the saved backup, enter the old watch passcode if prompted, and leave the new watch on its charger during restoration. Google says the prior backup restores apps, data, settings, watch face, and tiles.

Transfer a Pixel Watch to a new phone
Google documents a transfer flow for moving an existing Pixel Watch to a new phone. It requires Wear OS 4; Google’s Pixel Watch Help gives the note, “Requires Wear OS 4.”

- Start Transfer watch from the watch’s Settings > System menu, or start it in the Pixel Watch app on the old phone.
- Open the Pixel Watch app on the new phone and follow its steps to add the watch.
- Confirm that the pairing code matches, then finish the transfer in the app.
- Keep the watch available while the process completes. It unpairs from the old phone only after the transfer succeeds; watch faces may take time to sync.
For an LTE Pixel Watch, Google says the transfer checks whether the new phone has the same number. If the number is different, setup prompts you to configure the new number. See How to upgrade your Pixel Watch or connected phone without losing data.
What should transfer—and what may not
Restoration is not a promise that every item will move in every situation. The documented Apple and Google workflows are platform-specific, and they don’t establish that all health records, apps, settings, watch faces, or cellular arrangements transfer between brands.

If setup or restoration doesn’t finish
- No pairing prompt: Check that Bluetooth is on, the phone has internet access, and the watch and phone are close together. On Apple Watch, Apple also allows manual pairing if scanning the animation doesn’t work.
- No backup appears: Don’t erase the old watch yet. Confirm that a backup was enabled and completed, and check that you’re signing in with the appropriate account. For Pixel Watch, allow for the time Google says backup can take.
- Pixel Watch transfer option is missing: Verify that the watch is running Wear OS 4, which Google requires for its documented transfer feature.
- LTE setup differs from expected: Follow the watch’s setup prompt and contact the carrier to confirm number and plan handling.
- Data or watch faces are still syncing: Keep the devices connected and nearby rather than resetting or retiring the old watch prematurely.
