Do not keep guessing. Later lockouts can last substantially longer, and if Erase Data is enabled, the watch can erase itself after 10 incorrect entries.

The exact wording and layout can vary by watchOS version, language, and Apple Watch model. Use the message currently displayed on your watch as the immediate guide. The important point is that the timer is a security control, not a repair countdown that can be bypassed by restarting or connecting the watch to a computer.

1. Wait, then verify the correct passcode
Leave the watch alone until the countdown ends. When it allows another attempt, enter the Apple Watch passcode, not the passcode for your iPhone or another Apple device.
Be especially careful if you recently changed the watch passcode, use more than one Apple Watch, or normally unlock the watch automatically with your iPhone. Think through the current code before making another attempt. Repeated guesses can trigger longer delays and can eventually erase the watch, depending on the Erase Data setting.
If you do not know the current passcode, there is no supported way to reveal or bypass it. Apple’s forgotten-passcode procedure requires erasing the watch and setting it up again.
2. Restart only if the watch is behaving abnormally
A normal restart may help if the display, buttons, or connection to the paired iPhone is malfunctioning. It does not remove a forgotten passcode or clear a legitimate security delay.

- Hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Use the on-screen power control to turn the watch off.
- After it shuts down, hold the side button again until the Apple logo appears.
Do not repeatedly restart a watch that is operating normally in an attempt to defeat the timer. If the watch will not turn off normally or is completely unresponsive, use a force restart only as a fallback:

- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown together.
- Keep holding them for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
A force restart is a response to an unresponsive device, not a passcode-recovery method. After the watch restarts, you may still have to wait for the lockout period or erase it if the passcode has been forgotten.
3. Reset the Apple Watch when the passcode is forgotten
Erasing is the supported solution when you cannot remember the Apple Watch passcode. It removes the watch’s media, data, and settings. You can restore available information from a backup during setup, but you should not assume that every item can be recovered without one.
Reset directly on the watch
Keep the Apple Watch on its charger throughout this process. A suitable Apple Watch charger is useful here because Apple’s on-watch reset procedure requires the watch to remain charging; charging itself does not bypass the passcode.
- Place the watch on its charger and leave it there.
- Hold the side button until the power control appears.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase/reset screen appears.
- Choose Reset, then confirm the erase when prompted.
- Wait for the erase to finish.
- Set up the watch again and restore from a backup when that option appears.
Labels can differ slightly between watchOS versions and languages. If a control is named differently, follow the equivalent erase or reset control shown on the watch rather than selecting random options.
Reset it from the paired iPhone
If the watch is still paired and communicating with its iPhone, the iPhone route is usually the clearer option:

- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Go to General > Reset.
- Choose Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
- Enter the Apple Account password if requested.
- Complete setup again and restore from a backup if one is available.
If your watch has cellular service, the erase process may ask whether to keep or remove the cellular plan. Keep it if you plan to pair the same watch again and your carrier arrangement supports that choice; remove it if you are giving the watch away or otherwise will not use it with your account. Check with your carrier if you are unsure.
Activation Lock: the issue that appears after an erase
Erasing a passcode-locked Apple Watch does not automatically mean that anyone can set it up. Activation Lock remains associated with the Apple Account that was linked to the watch.

Unpairing through the paired iPhone both erases the watch and removes Activation Lock after the Apple Account password is entered. If you erase the watch directly on the watch, Activation Lock remains enabled. You will need the associated Apple Account credentials when setting it up again.
If you bought the watch used
The previous owner must erase and unpair it properly. A seller should not simply hand over a watch showing a passcode screen or Home screen. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account password, Activation Lock is still enabled; the buyer cannot legitimately remove it with a reset, charger, computer, or third-party unlocking tool.
Use the right charger—but do not expect it to unlock the watch
The charger is relevant because the direct reset procedure requires the watch to stay on a charger. Apple recommends an Apple-made charger or an MFi-certified charger bearing the Made for Apple Watch badge. Counterfeit or uncertified charging accessories can cause slow charging, repeated charging sounds, or reduced battery life.

If you need a replacement, choose the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable or the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable that matches your watch and power adapter. Fast charging is supported only by certain Apple Watch models and requires a compatible cable plus an 18W-or-higher USB-C power adapter; do not assume that every Apple Watch generation supports it.

It cannot reveal the passcode, shorten the waiting period, remove Activation Lock, or recover erased data.
What not to do
- Do not keep trying random passcodes. The documented delays escalate, and Erase Data may erase the watch after 10 incorrect entries.
- Do not install third-party “Apple Watch unlock” software. A computer cannot officially recover a forgotten watch passcode without erasing the watch.
- Do not repeatedly force-restart a responsive watch. Restarting does not defeat passcode security.
- Do not put a pin, SIM tool, or other object into the watch’s holes. They are for sound and, on Apple Watch Ultra, water-depth measurement. Apple Watch has no SIM slot or reset button.
- Do not assume charging fixes a forgotten passcode. Charging is a requirement for the on-watch reset, not an unlock technique.
When to contact Apple
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the watch will not respond to the side button or Digital Crown, cannot remain powered on while charging, or continues malfunctioning after a reset.
Depending on your location, Apple may offer in-person service through an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider, or mail-in service using a prepaid shipping box. Repair or replacement costs depend on the model, coverage, location, and inspection results. Do not assume that every model or type of physical damage is covered.
Authorized repairs use genuine Apple parts and are covered by Apple’s applicable service guarantee. An independent repair provider may offer its own warranty, but it is not Apple-authorized unless it specifically qualifies as such.
