Apple Watch X was never Apple’s official product name. The rumored tenth-generation watch launched on September 9, 2024, as the Apple Watch Series 10, becoming available on September 20. It did deliver the two most persistent design predictions—a thinner case and a larger display—but it was an evolution of the familiar Apple Watch rather than the radical anniversary redesign some reports suggested.
As of August 18, 2026, Series 10 is a previous-generation model. Apple’s current U.S. lineup is the Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3.

What was the Apple Watch X rumor?
“Apple Watch X” and “Apple Watch Series X” were speculative names for the Apple Watch’s tenth generation. The name was inspired by the tenth anniversary of the original Apple Watch, but Apple never confirmed that it would use the Roman numeral X commercially.
Rumor coverage also predicted a substantially thinner case, larger displays, a more dramatic external redesign, possible changes to the band-attachment system, and new health sensors or major health capabilities. The predictions were partly right. Apple made the watch thinner and increased display area, but retained the square case, Digital Crown, side button, and established band ecosystem. There was no official “X” branding, no demonstrated wholesale replacement of the Apple Watch shape, and no clearly confirmed new band system.
What Apple actually released
Apple announced the Series 10 on September 9, 2024. Its main changes were:
- A thinner case: Apple said it was nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9.
- New case sizes: 42mm and 46mm, replacing the previous standard 41mm and 45mm sizes.
- A larger display: up to 9% more active screen area than Series 7, 8, and 9, and up to 30% more than Series 4, 5, and 6.
- Updated proportions: thinner bezels, a wider aspect ratio, and more rounded corners.
- New materials and finishes: aluminum models, titanium options, and a jet-black aluminum finish.
- New hardware: Apple’s S10 SiP, faster charging, water-depth and water-temperature sensing, and support for sleep apnea notifications.
- Software: watchOS 11 at launch.

The answer depends on whether “larger” means the case or the display. The 46mm Series 10 case is only slightly larger than the 45mm Series 9 case, while the 42mm model is only slightly larger than the previous 41mm version. This is not a watch that grew dramatically in every direction.
The more noticeable change is the screen. Apple increased active display area with smaller bezels, a wider shape, and more rounded corners. That gives the Series 10 more room for text, controls, complications, workout information, and watch faces without making it proportionally enormous.

How thin is the Apple Watch Series 10?
Apple describes the Series 10 as nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9. Apple’s technical specifications list the case thickness at approximately 9.7mm.

“Nearly 10% thinner” is a relative comparison, not a universal reduction against every Apple Watch generation. Older models, different case materials, and measurement methods can make direct comparisons less exact. The accurate claim is that Series 10 represented a meaningful reduction compared with the three immediately preceding standard generations.
The thinner body can make the watch feel less bulky during sleep tracking, exercise, or everyday wear. It does not, however, turn the Series 10 into an Ultra-sized battery device or a completely new category of watch.
Did the thinner design improve battery life?
No. Apple continued to rate the Series 10 for up to 18 hours of normal use, with a longer rating available in Low Power Mode. The thinner design did not bring a major battery-life increase.

That is an important trade-off. Series 10 remains broadly a daily-charge Apple Watch. If avoiding frequent charging is more important than having the thinnest mainstream case, the Ultra range is the more relevant comparison. Apple’s archived product information lists the Series 10 battery rating and 50-meter water resistance on its product page.

Series 10 added or supported a substantial set of health and activity features, including:
- Sleep apnea notifications.
- Vitals tracking through watchOS.
- Wrist-temperature sensing.
- Water-depth sensing to 6 meters.
- Water-temperature sensing.
- ECG and heart-rate features.
- Crash Detection and Fall Detection.
- Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates.
Sleep apnea notifications should not be described as a diagnosis. They are a notification or screening-related feature, and availability can depend on country, regulatory approval, age, medical history, and software version. Health features are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Check Apple’s regional availability information and product disclaimers before buying for a specific medical use.
The same caution applies to ECG, heart-rate, temperature, and cycle features: they can provide useful information, but they do not replace clinical evaluation.
What the Series 10 retained
Despite the thinner body and larger screen, Series 10 remained recognizably an Apple Watch. It retained:

- The Digital Crown and side button.
- iPhone-only compatibility.
- An approximately 18-hour standard battery rating.
- 50-meter water resistance.
- GPS and optional cellular connectivity.
- The established Apple Watch software ecosystem.
- Broad compatibility with existing watch bands, subject to Apple’s sizing guidance.
Cellular models can handle calls and messages away from an iPhone, but they cost more and generally require an additional carrier plan. Verify carrier support and recurring fees before choosing GPS + Cellular.
Was it a true anniversary redesign?
It was a significant industrial-design refinement, but not a platform reset. In the limited sense, Series 10 was an anniversary-style update: it was the thinnest Apple Watch at launch and introduced larger standard displays and new case sizes.
In the more dramatic sense suggested by some “Apple Watch X” reports, it was not a radically different product. Apple did not abandon the established square form, introduce official X branding, demonstrate a battery breakthrough, or clearly replace the existing band system. Calling it an evolutionary redesign is more accurate than calling it either a failure to deliver or a completely new Apple Watch.

Series 10 can still be a sensible purchase, but only with the right price and priorities. It is no longer Apple’s current mainstream model, so its value depends heavily on the discount compared with Series 11 and on whether the remaining features meet your needs.

Buy Series 10 if:
- You can find it substantially cheaper than Series 11.
- You want a thinner, lighter-feeling design and a larger display.
- You are upgrading from an older model such as Series 4, 5, 6, or 7.
- Sleep apnea notifications, depth sensing, faster charging, and the larger screen matter to you.
- You do not need Ultra-level battery life, rugged construction, or satellite connectivity.
Skip or deprioritize Series 10 if:
- Its price is close to the current Series 11.
- You want the longest battery life available from Apple.
- You need the Ultra line’s outdoor-navigation, durability, or emergency features.
- Your iPhone does not meet the required compatibility conditions.
- You expect a fundamentally new Apple Watch shape or band system.
- You are buying mainly for a medical feature without confirming regional availability and limitations.
Do not treat Apple’s archived Series 10 starting price as proof of current stock or a current sale. A live retailer or Apple refurbished listing should be checked before purchase.

Series 10 versus Apple’s current watches
Apple Watch Series 11
Series 11 is the direct successor and the default choice for most buyers who want a current mainstream Apple Watch. Apple’s U.S. store listed it from $399 as of August 18, 2026, with 42mm and 46mm sizes. It offers a wide-angle OLED display, the S10 chip, 5G capability, and newer listed health features including hypertension notifications. It requires an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. Choose Series 11 when the price gap is small, you want the longest likely software runway, or you prefer buying the current model rather than an older discounted one.
Apple Watch SE 3
The SE 3 is Apple’s lower-cost option, listed from $249 in the United States. It is aimed at buyers who primarily want notifications, activity tracking, safety features, and Apple ecosystem integration. It has fewer premium health, display, and sensor capabilities than the Series range, so it is not a direct replacement for someone specifically seeking the Series 10’s larger advanced display. Apple Watch Ultra 3
Ultra 3 is the premium, adventure-focused alternative. Apple’s detailed U.S. product page listed it from $799 as of August 18, 2026. It has a 49mm titanium case, up to 42 hours of normal use, deeper-water capabilities, satellite emergency connectivity, a siren, and precision dual-frequency GPS. Ultra 3 is the better fit for battery life, outdoor navigation, durability, and demanding water use. It is a poor fit if you want a thin, discreet everyday watch or have a smaller wrist.
A practical buying decision
- Check the price gap. If Series 10 is only slightly cheaper than Series 11, the current model is usually the stronger purchase.
- Check iPhone compatibility. Confirm that your iPhone and iOS version support the model you plan to buy.
- Decide whether daily charging is acceptable. If not, compare the Ultra 3 rather than focusing only on case thickness.
- Match health features to your location. Confirm that the feature you want is available and authorized in your country.
- Choose for use, not rumor history. Series 10’s larger display and thinner body are real, but it does not provide the radical redesign once associated with “Apple Watch X.”

Bottom line
The “Apple Watch X” rumor got the broad design direction right but the official name wrong. Apple released the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024, with a case nearly 10% thinner than Series 7–9 and a larger 42mm or 46mm display enabled by slimmer bezels and revised proportions. It was a meaningful refinement, not a radical redesign, and its standard battery rating remained up to 18 hours.
