What does firmware 8E258 change?
Apple’s release notes for 8E258 say only “bug fixes and other improvements.” Apple has not published a detailed feature-by-feature changelog. That means there is no confirmed basis for claiming that this release improves sound quality, battery life, active noise cancellation, Bluetooth performance, call quality, or latency.

Do not confuse this update with the earlier 7E101 firmware for first-generation USB-C AirPods Max. That release added lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over a compatible USB-C wired connection, with supported Apple devices and operating systems. Those features were not announced as part of 7E108 or 8E258. MacRumors documented the earlier 7E101 release.
How to update AirPods Max
There is no ordinary “Check for updates” or “Update Now” button, downloadable firmware file, or supported command for forcing an AirPods Max firmware installation. Apple’s process is automatic once the required conditions are met.
- Update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest available operating-system version.
- Turn on Bluetooth and pair the AirPods Max with that Apple device.
- Connect the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to Wi-Fi.
- Plug the AirPods Max into power using a charging cable.
- Keep the headphones within Bluetooth range of the Apple device.
- Leave them connected and charging for at least 30 minutes.
- Reconnect the AirPods Max if necessary, then check the firmware version again.
The 30-minute period is a minimum, not a guaranteed installation time. The headphones do not need to display a progress bar, and plugging them in does not necessarily install the update immediately.

Identify your AirPods Max model first
USB-C alone does not prove that you own AirPods Max 2. Apple sells two different USB-C models:

AirPods Max 2 is a distinct 2026 product with the H2 chip. The earlier first-generation USB-C model remains a separate product, even though both models use a USB-C connector. Apple’s AirPods Max 2 support page provides model and compatibility details.
If your version matches the row for your model, your headphones are already current. Do not attempt to install another model’s firmware or look for a downgrade option.

If the update does not appear
Work through these steps in order:
- Confirm that the AirPods Max are connected to power.
- Check that the iPhone, iPad, or Mac has Wi-Fi access.
- Keep the headphones close to the Apple device with Bluetooth enabled.
- Leave the headphones charging for at least 30 minutes.
- Open the headphones or reconnect them, then check the firmware version again.
- Restart the AirPods Max and repeat the process.
- Only as a last resort, reset the AirPods Max and try again.
Resetting can remove pairing information and settings, so it is not a sensible first response to a slow firmware rollout. If the update still will not install, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

AirPods Max can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but firmware management is less straightforward and some features may be limited. Apple says people without a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac can arrange an appointment at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to update the firmware.

A firmware update also should not be confused with wired audio. On compatible USB-C AirPods Max models, a USB-C connection can support lossless and low-latency audio. During an update, however, the cable’s essential role is to keep the headphones powered while they remain within range of the Apple device.

Operating-system and feature requirements
For general firmware updating, Apple’s guidance is to use the latest available operating-system software. Requirements for individual features are separate.
For example, the earlier lossless and ultra-low-latency functionality required first-generation USB-C AirPods Max with firmware 7E101, plus iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later. Those historical requirements should not be treated as a universal requirement for installing 8E258.
AirPods Max 2 features such as Adaptive Audio, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation also depend on compatible hardware, firmware, operating systems, and—in the case of Live Translation—additional device, language, region, and Apple Intelligence requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould you install it?
Yes. Owners should let the automatic update complete, particularly if they are experiencing an issue that could be addressed by a bug fix. But expectations should remain realistic: Apple’s public notes do not promise a new listening mode or a measurable improvement to audio, battery life, ANC, or connectivity.
Do not install beta firmware merely to work around a normal production update delay. Apple’s AirPods beta firmware program is intended for development and testing, not as a routine update method.
