The Aquastar Deepstar’s story centers on an unusual idea: a dive chronograph whose bezel was designed not only to time a dive, but also to help plan a repetitive dive. Aquastar dates the original to 1962 and says its no-decompression bezel was patented in 1964. Today’s Deepstar family keeps the vintage design cues but includes both chronographs and a three-hand model, with different sizes and movements.
What is the Aquastar Deepstar?
The Deepstar is a Swiss dive-watch family whose best-known vintage version is a chronograph with a distinctive no-decompression bezel. Aquastar says the original was released in 1962 and built by Frédéric Robert for the Marine Nationale, the French Navy. That military-service account comes from the manufacturer; it is not independently corroborated here by period procurement records or other archival evidence. Aquastar’s Deepstar history is the source for the brand’s account.
Aquastar identifies the original chronograph movement as a Valjoux 23 column-wheel caliber. The watch’s lasting identity, however, is not just its movement or military association: it is the bezel, which combined elapsed-time timing with information intended to support planning a second dive.
How the vintage Deepstar bezel was intended to work
Aquastar describes two scales: an inner 60-minute elapsed-time scale and an outer no-decompression scale based on period French Navy tables. The company says a diver could use them to read a maximum bottom time for a given depth, time a surface interval, and work through a repetitive-dive sequence. It calls the Deepstar the world’s first multiple-dive no-decompression chronograph; that superlative remains the company’s claim rather than an independently verified historical finding.

- Swiss Made Watch
- Movement: Automatic Mido Caliber - Power reserve 80 hours
- Case Type: Stainless steel with blue ceramic bezel - Capable of withstanding pressures of up to 20 bar (200 m/660 ft), and equipped with a screw-down crown, this watch offers optimal protection against water.
- Case Size: 42.5mm - Case Thickness: 12.25mm - Blue wave design dial with individually applied indexes coated with white Super-Luminova - Crystal: Sapphire crystal with double sided anti-reflection treatment
- Band Type: Blue rubber strap - Folding Clasp with Diving Extension - Band Width: 22mm
This is an account of historical design intent, not guidance for planning a real dive. The sources do not independently establish the vintage scale’s calibration, and an old watch’s condition or water resistance cannot be inferred from its original purpose. Do not rely on a vintage Deepstar bezel for dive planning or assume an individual example is watertight.
From the 1962 original to the modern Deepstar family
Aquastar dates the line’s introduction to 1962 and says the no-decompression bezel was patented in 1964. Its page attributes Swiss patent CH 436 140 to Marc Jasinski for Aquastar S.A. The patent narrative and release date are presented here as Aquastar’s history; no independent patent-office or period source is established in the material available. The brand’s Deepstar III page also refers to a vintage 1965 Deepstar when discussing its hand-wound caliber. That model-specific reference does not replace the broader page’s 1962 date for the line’s release.

Modern Deepstars draw on the archive design, but they are not all the same kind of watch. The range spans a smaller three-hand model and larger chronographs, with automatic and manual-wind options. Aquastar says the current family is rated to 200 m water resistance, but specifications can vary by reference and should be checked on the exact model page. That modern rating says nothing about the condition or safe use of a vintage watch.
Vintage Deepstar and current models compared
| Model or generation | Size and layout | Movement | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vintage Deepstar | Original chronograph; case size not stated in the cited Aquastar history page | Valjoux 23 column-wheel chronograph, according to Aquastar | The historical watch associated with the signature no-decompression bezel and the company’s 1962 launch account. |
| Deepstar II | 37 mm, three-hand | Sellita SW290, according to Aquastar | A modern family member, but not a chronograph. |
| Deepstar 39 mm Chronograph | 39 mm chronograph | La Joux-Perret column-wheel chronograph architecture, according to Aquastar | A modern chronograph reissue. |
| Deepstar III | 39 mm hand-wound chronograph | La Joux-Perret column-wheel chronograph | Aquastar lists a sapphire crystal, 200 m water resistance, and a production limit of 300 pieces per year for this model. |
Model specifications and availability can change. For the Deepstar III, the 300-per-year limit is Aquastar’s current product-page statement, not an independently verified production count. Consult the Deepstar III product page for the manufacturer’s listed details.

Which Deepstar suits which buyer?
- For the original’s historical character: A vintage Deepstar is the direct link to the Valjoux 23 era and the bezel story, but condition and originality matter more than the model’s original dive-watch purpose.
- For a smaller, simpler modern watch: The 37 mm Deepstar II has a three-hand layout and Sellita SW290 movement; it is not the chronograph choice.
- For a modern chronograph: The 39 mm automatic chronograph and the 39 mm hand-wound Deepstar III are the relevant current branches. The latter is the explicitly manual-wind model.
When comparing specific examples, check the exact reference, case size, winding type, movement, service history, and verified water-resistance status. For vintage watches, ask about originality, movement condition, and recent pressure testing; no reliable vintage-market valuation is established by the cited manufacturer pages. Current models and accessories appear in Aquastar’s current collection, but listings and prices may change.
