Some 1990s watches may still resist water, but their age or case marking cannot tell you whether an individual watch is sealed today. Gaskets age, cases can be knocked or opened, and exposure to chlorine, salt water, perspiration, ultraviolet light, or cosmetics can affect the seals. Before buying a vintage watch for use around water—or wearing one you already own—get its current condition checked by an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker.
What a 1990s watch’s water-resistance marking tells you
A marking on the case describes a rating associated with the watch when it was made; it is not a report on the watch’s present condition and is not a lifetime guarantee. Hamilton says water resistance can be impaired by naturally aging gaskets or accidental knocks to the case. Seiko likewise notes that gaskets can deteriorate and may be deformed after shock. The same model and marking therefore cannot establish that two decades-old watches are equally resistant now.

Use the term water-resistant, not waterproof: the practical question is whether this particular watch, in its current condition, passes an appropriate check. A rating alone cannot establish that it is safe for swimming, showering, or diving.
What can weaken an older watch’s seal
- Aging seals: Gaskets can deteriorate over time, even without an obvious accident.
- Impact or deformation: A knock can affect the case or sealing surfaces; Seiko specifically warns that shock can deform gaskets.
- Exposure and wear: Hamilton identifies perspiration, chlorine or salt water, ultraviolet exposure, and cosmetics as factors that can affect water resistance.
- Case opening: A battery change, repair, or other service that opens the case makes resealing and testing relevant. Victorinox recommends a check whenever its watch case has been opened.
These factors do not prove a watch has failed; they explain why its condition should be checked rather than inferred from age or appearance.

How to assess a 1990s watch before buying it
- Ask for the service history. Find out whether the case has been opened, when that happened, and whether the watch was resealed afterward.
- Request a recent documented water-resistance test. Confirm the date and that the result applies to the exact watch being sold—not merely to the same model or a prior service.
- Match the result to your intended use. Ask the seller or watchmaker whether the watch’s specific rating and current test result support the activity you have in mind. Do not assume an unspecified test means it is suitable for swimming or diving.
- Have an independent qualified professional check it if needed. For an older or valuable watch, use a brand-authorized service center or qualified watchmaker before exposing it to water. The professional can assess the watch’s condition and whether appropriate seals can be fitted; restoration to an original rating is not guaranteed.
These are prudent buying checks, not a guarantee of future performance. A test reflects the watch’s condition when it is performed. A 1992 article in Horological Times describes a passing test as assuring the customer on the day of the test; it cannot establish how the watch will perform indefinitely: “To Test or Not to Test?”.
What to do after a battery change or service
Ask whether the case was opened, whether it was resealed, and whether a water-resistance test was performed afterward. Do not treat a completed battery change or repair as proof that the watch was tested. Victorinox recommends checking its watches every 18 months and at least whenever the case has been opened; that is Victorinox’s guidance for its own watches, not a universal interval for all vintage watches.

When to arrange a check
Check intervals differ by manufacturer and are not interchangeable guarantees. Hamilton recommends a yearly water-resistance check for its watches. Victorinox recommends checks every 18 months for its watches, and whenever the case is opened. Seiko gives about three years as a general service recommendation, with frequency depending on climate and individual care, while separately recommending regular water-resistance checks. Its service interval should not be mistaken for a universal water-resistance testing schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor any particular 1990s watch, ask an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker what check is appropriate for its make, model, condition, and intended use. Do not open the case or attempt a home test: these steps cannot safely establish the condition of an unknown vintage watch.

What to do if you see condensation under the crystal
Contact a watch service professional promptly if condensation appears beneath the glass. Tiffany advises contacting a store for complete service when this happens. Do not rely on the original rating or wait for the condensation to disappear as proof that the seal is sound: Tiffany’s water-resistance guidance.
Manufacturer guidance and specialist context
For brand-specific care information, see Hamilton’s watch-care guidance, Seiko’s service and water-resistance FAQ, and Victorinox’s watch FAQ. For additional watchmaking context, the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute’s Horological Times published “Waterproof & Water-Resistant Watches, Part 2” in December 1993. A service provider also describes its water-resistance testing and recertification service.
