First confirm that the watch is quartz and uses a replaceable, non-rechargeable battery. Then identify the exact cell and caseback type before opening it. If the watch is valuable, water-resistant, corroded, difficult to open, or has a damaged seal, have a watchmaker handle the replacement: opening a case can admit dust and compromise its water resistance.
Should you replace the battery yourself?
A battery swap is not suitable for every vintage watch. Citizen Watch Global Network says, “We do not recommend to replace the battery by yourself,” and warns that opening the case can let dust in or impair sealing. Seiko likewise cautions that a watch’s original water resistance may deteriorate after its caseback has been opened and closed.

Consider professional service instead if any of these apply:
- The watch is collectible, unusually valuable, or still under warranty.
- It is solar-powered or uses a rechargeable cell rather than an ordinary replaceable battery. Check the model documentation: Citizen explains that the specifications identify the cell type at Cell (Battery) Replacement.
- You need the watch to retain water resistance, or plan to wear it in water.
- The caseback will not release with a properly fitting tool, or you cannot identify the closure type.
- You see battery leakage, corrosion, a missing or damaged gasket, or cannot verify the replacement cell.
Citizen’s guidance is available in its battery-replacement FAQ. Seiko directs owners to an authorized service center or appointed dealer for battery service.

Identify the battery and caseback before starting
Confirm the power source
Mechanical watches do not take batteries. Quartz watches usually do, but some watches use rechargeable cells, including solar models; those should not be treated as routine battery swaps. Check the watch’s model or movement documentation before opening the case.
Find the exact cell code
Do not select a battery by appearance or diameter alone. Use the model or movement documentation, or read the number printed on the old cell once it is safely accessible. Confirm the correct cell type and polarity for that movement. Energizer’s Watch Battery Replacement Guide advises using the old battery number or its corresponding type; cross-references still need to be checked for the particular movement.

Work out how the back opens
Look for a raised lip on a snap-back, notches on a screw-back, or small screws around the caseback. The closure determines the tool: a flat-edged opener for the correct snap-back lip, an adjustable case wrench whose teeth fit the screw-back notches, or a properly fitting precision screwdriver for small screws. Stuller’s trade instructions describe the different approaches for snap-back cases and screw-back cases.

What you need
- The verified replacement cell for the specific watch.
- A case opener suited to the closure type; there is no single opener for every case.
- Plastic tweezers for handling the cell, if available.
- A precision screwdriver that fits the retainer screw, if the movement uses one.
- A clean, stable, well-lit work surface.
A slipping tool can scratch the case or injure your hand. Do not improvise with a tool that does not fit, and do not press down on the crystal while securing the watch.

- 【Only for one type of watch】What you need to pay special attention to is that this adjustable watch back opener is only suitable for watch back cover with notches, not for watch back with a pry opening or screws; only suitable for round watch, not for square or other types watch.
- 【Function of the watch holder】With the watch holder, the grip area is larger, which can generate more torque and help you open the watch back cover more comfortably and efficiently. In addition, using the watch holder is more solid than fixing the watch directly by hand, which can effectively avoid scratching the watch and hand due to watch sliding.
- 【Anti-slip films】Using the Anti-slip film can enhance the friction to prevent the watch opener from slipping on the watch, and also protect the watch from the tool leaving scratches on the watch. Be sure to use the Anti-slip film, otherwise there is an increased risk of tools slipping and scratching the watch.
- 【Operation technique】Notice: Force downward and rotate the opener slowly, otherwise the clamps will tend to slip and fail to hold the watch back.
- 【Operating Instructions】The instructions(in English) are in the form of pictures plus text, explaining to you in detail the correct way to use the tools to avoid damaging your watch by incorrect operation and helping you to solve watch problems at home.
Replace the cell carefully
- Prepare the watch. Work on a clean, stable surface and keep dust away from the open case. If the watch is intended for water exposure or you are unsure about its condition, stop here and use a watchmaker.
- Open the case with the matching tool. For a snap-back, place the flat-edged opener at the raised lip and apply controlled leverage. For a screw-back, seat the wrench teeth firmly in opposing notches and turn to loosen. Use a fitting screwdriver for a case held by small screws. If the back resists a correctly fitting tool, stop rather than applying more force.
- Record what you see. Before removing anything, note the cell code, which side faces up, the position of any plastic movement cover, and how the retainer sits. Avoid touching or moving the hands, coil, or other movement parts.
- Remove the old cell and fit the verified replacement. Release only the cell retainer as designed. Avoid bending a spring clip or losing a small screw. Handle the new cell with plastic tweezers where possible, and match the original orientation and confirmed polarity. If you find corrosion or leakage, do not attempt to clean it as an ordinary battery change; Energizer’s guide advises professional service.
- Check the gasket and operation. Make sure the gasket is present and correctly seated, and inspect it for visible damage. Check whether the watch runs before closing the case. A movement that does not start with the correct cell may need diagnosis rather than another guessed battery.
- Close the back correctly. Align the caseback and seal without pinching or displacing the gasket. If the gasket is missing, hardened, cracked, stretched, or otherwise unserviceable, do not assume the closed watch is water-resistant.
Water resistance after opening
A caseback that looks closed is not proof that the watch still meets its previous water-resistance rating. Seiko says opening the case can reduce designed water resistance and recommends testing after battery replacement. For watches rated 10 bar or higher, Seiko specifically calls for a water-resistance test each time the battery is replaced; see its battery remarks. Ask a watchmaker or authorized service center which test is appropriate for the specific model before exposing it to water.

If the watch still does not run after you install the verified cell in the correct orientation, do not keep swapping batteries or probing the movement. The cause may require diagnosis, and the available guidance does not establish a universal reset procedure for vintage quartz watches. Check the applicable model instructions or take the watch to a qualified watchmaker.
