How to Care for a Vintage Watch With Unverified Water Resistance

An old rating or screw-down crown cannot confirm a vintage watch is still water-resistant. Keep it dry until a qualified watchmaker assesses the assembled case.

Treat the watch as not water-resistant until a qualified watchmaker familiar with vintage watches has inspected and appropriately tested the assembled case. Until then, keep it away from water—including showers, rain where avoidable, and immersion—and do not open it yourself. An old water-resistance marking, screw-down crown, or clean appearance cannot confirm that decades-old seals still work.

Can I get my vintage watch wet?

Not until its present condition has been assessed. Keep it off for showers, swimming, dishwashing, and other deliberate water exposure. This is a precaution for a watch with unknown seals and case condition, not a claim that every vintage watch is beyond restoration.

Even a watch that once met a stated rating may no longer do so. TAG Heuer notes that water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed and identifies aging gaskets and impacts to the crown, pushers, or crystal as risks. Hamilton also lists chemicals, ultraviolet exposure, perspiration, chlorine, and salt water as factors that can affect water resistance. These manufacturer warnings explain why a historical marking cannot establish the watch’s current condition. TAG Heuer’s water-resistance guidance and Hamilton’s care guidance apply to their own watches; they do not certify an unidentified vintage watch.

Avoid sudden heat-to-cold changes, steam, soaps, solvents, detergents, perfumes, and cosmetics until a watchmaker has advised you. TAG Heuer specifically warns against showers because heat changes, soap, steam, and water pressure can pose risks.

How to care for it while its status is unknown

  • Keep the case dry. Avoid deliberate water exposure, and limit avoidable exposure to rain.
  • Leave the crown and pushers alone when wet. Do not operate them underwater or while moisture is on the watch.
  • Do not open the watch yourself. Opening it can disturb seals or compromise the case.
  • Protect the strap. Keep leather and textile straps dry; water can damage them.
  • Wipe only with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rinse or wash the watch unless a watchmaker confirms that its case and strap can tolerate it.

For surface care, a soft microfiber cloth is suitable for dry wiping. Rolex’s care FAQ includes advice for its own specified watches; it is not a basis for washing this unknown vintage watch.

How to find out whether an old watch is still water-resistant

Take the watch, any paperwork, and its known service history to a qualified watchmaker with vintage-watch experience. Ask the watchmaker to inspect the case, crystal, crown, caseback, seals, and any prior repairs, then explain what test—if any—is appropriate for this particular watch.

The test must assess the assembled case with the movement enclosed to establish whether the watch as worn is water-resistant. The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute’s technical article quotes watchmaker Henry B. Fried: “No watchmaker, manufacturer, or designer-inventor can be sure that the watch or watch case he makes, sells, or services is water-resistant/waterproof unless the case is tested with the movement enclosed, ready for wear.” Read the AWCI article on water-resistance testing.

When discussing service, ask what the proposed work can establish and what limitations remain. Rolex describes seal replacement and pressure testing as part of its service for its watches, but that does not establish the correct parts or attainable rating for a different vintage watch. Rolex’s service description is an example of its own procedure, not a prescription for another make. A new gasket alone should not be assumed to restore a historical rating: the watchmaker must consider the case, components, condition, and any conservation tradeoffs.

Manufacturer check intervals are not a universal schedule for an unidentified vintage watch. Hamilton recommends annual checks for its watches; TAG Heuer recommends checks every two years for watches regularly exposed to water. Neither interval proves this watch is safe to wear in water.

What to do if you see moisture under the crystal

If you notice fogging, droplets, or condensation beneath the crystal, contact a watchmaker promptly rather than waiting for the watch to dry on its own. Breitling advises taking a watch with water or condensation under the crystal to a retailer or authorized service center immediately; for a vintage watch, seek professional attention without delay. Breitling’s maintenance guidance gives its advice for Breitling watches.

What cannot be determined without an inspection

Without the watch’s make, model, original rating, service history, seal materials, case condition, and repair history, it is not possible to establish its current rating, safe water exposure, correct replacement parts, or whether restoration to a historical specification is possible. A watchmaker who examines this specific watch is the appropriate person to assess those questions.
