Usually, no. Don’t press chronograph pushers underwater or while the watch is wet unless the manufacturer explicitly says that the exact model is designed for underwater button operation. A watch being suitable to wear while swimming does not mean its pushers are safe to use in the water.
Why swimming with a watch is different from operating its pushers
Water resistance describes how a particular watch is intended to handle water under specified conditions; it does not automatically mean every control can be operated underwater. Pressing a pusher can affect the seals around the control. Several manufacturers therefore distinguish between wearing a suitable watch in water and using its functions there.

Breitling says, “Never activate the chronograph pushers underwater or when the watch is wet.” TAG Heuer says, “Do not operate the pushers underwater,” and Hamilton advises, “Do not use crown/push button functions in or under water.” Follow the manual for your exact watch rather than assuming that a chronograph’s rating permits underwater operation.

That depends on the specific model, its stated water-resistance rating, its manual, and its current condition. Patek Philippe’s guidance allows swimming with its water-resistant watches under its stated precautions, while Hamilton provides swimming guidance based on rating. Neither point is a blanket endorsement of operating chronograph controls in water. Check the manufacturer’s swimming guidance for your watch before taking it into a pool or the sea.

A printed rating alone cannot establish that an older or damaged watch remains water-resistant. TAG Heuer notes that water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed: aging gaskets and impacts to parts such as the crown, pushers, or crystal can affect it. Breitling also warns that gaskets deteriorate.
When is underwater pusher operation permitted?
Only when the manufacturer explicitly permits it for the exact model. Casio’s technical guidance identifies an exception for diver’s watch 200 m casing models, which permit underwater button operation. That exception does not apply automatically to other Casio watches—or to chronographs from other manufacturers. Casio’s general advice is not to operate buttons or the crown while a watch is submerged or wet, so check the specific model’s manual for the applicable instructions.

What to do before and after swimming
- Before swimming: Check the manual for the exact model’s swimming limits and any restrictions on using the crown or pushers. If the watch is old, damaged, or regularly exposed to water, arrange a water-resistance check with the manufacturer or an authorized service center.
- While swimming: Leave the chronograph pushers and crown alone unless the maker expressly permits underwater operation on that model.
- After pool or seawater exposure: Follow the maker’s cleaning instructions. Hamilton and Patek Philippe advise rinsing with fresh water after contact with chlorine or salt water. Do not press controls while the watch is wet.
Water-resistance checks: follow your watchmaker’s interval
There is no universal service interval in the cited manufacturer guidance. Recommendations differ by brand and use:

Use the interval your manufacturer recommends for your model and pattern of use. An inspection is especially prudent if the watch has taken an impact or shows damage around the case, crystal, crown, or pushers.
