Yes—GMT watches are useful if you regularly need to track local time and another time zone at a glance. Their 24-hour hand can keep showing a reference time while the regular hands show local time. For frequent travelers, a model with an independently adjustable local-hour hand makes changing destination time especially convenient. If you only check another zone occasionally, a phone or computer may be enough.
What a GMT watch shows
A GMT watch typically adds a 24-hour hand to the conventional hour and minute hands. The 24-hour hand makes one circuit of the dial per day, so its position on a 24-hour scale distinguishes morning from evening. On the GMT-Master II, Rolex describes the regular hands as showing local time and the 24-hour hand as showing a reference time, allowing two time zones to be read simultaneously. Rolex’s GMT-Master II feature guide explains that arrangement.

“GMT” in a model name does not tell you exactly how its hands are set. Controls and adjustment behavior vary by watch, so use the manual for the specific model rather than assuming that every GMT works alike.

Frequent travel
If you often cross time zones, a traveler-style GMT can let you move the local hour hand to destination time while leaving the 24-hour reference hand unchanged. Rolex describes this one-hour-at-a-time adjustment for the GMT-Master II. It lets you keep a home or other reference time visible as you update local time. Longines also identifies frequent flyers and business travelers as likely use cases in its guide to GMT watches.
#1 Best Overall
- Quartz GMT Movement - When used in conjunction with the black and blue rotating bezel, the two-blue and white triangle GMT hand can be used to track a second time zone.
- Stainless-steel - The stainless-steel case and bracelet are resistant to corrosion, rust, and daily wear and tear.
- Date Window - Easily track the date in a dedicated window beside 3 o'clock.
- Enhanced Visibility - Luminant hands ensure readability in low-light conditions.
Regular coordination with another time zone
You do not have to travel to benefit. If you routinely coordinate with a distant office, family member, or client, the second-time display can make that time easy to check without opening another device.
Occasional checks
If you rarely need another time zone, a phone, computer, or other clock may be adequate. The sources cited here explain how GMT functions work and identify likely use cases; they do not establish that a watch is faster or better than a digital device for everyone.

What to check before choosing one
- Local-time adjustment: Can you move the local hour hand independently, ideally in one-hour increments? This is the travel-specific convenience described for the GMT-Master II by Rolex.
- Reference-time readability: Is the GMT hand easy to read against a clear 24-hour scale? Longines identifies a clear scale as a useful feature in its GMT-watch guide.
- Third time zone: Does the watch have a rotating 24-hour bezel, and does its manual explain how to use it with the GMT hand? Tudor demonstrates reading an additional zone this way in its GMT-function tutorial.
- Exact setting instructions: Confirm which hand moves with each crown position or control. Tudor’s tutorial and Rolex’s description illustrate different model-specific arrangements.
How a third time zone can work
On some GMT watches, the rotating 24-hour bezel can be shifted so the GMT hand reads a third time zone against the adjusted scale. Tudor’s tutorial demonstrates this method. It is a model-specific feature and procedure, not a universal function of every GMT watch; follow the maker’s instructions for the watch you own.

A brief note on the name
GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, a time standard historically associated with the complication’s name. Rolex’s newsroom account says the original GMT-Master was associated with Pan Am and that an independently adjustable hour-hand movement was introduced in the GMT-Master II in 1982. This is the manufacturer’s history of its own models, not a general measure of how useful GMT watches are today. Rolex’s GMT-Master II history provides its account.
