To compare watches accurately, look at how each model displays and sets its second zone—not just the label.
What does GMT mean on a watch?
A common GMT layout keeps conventional 12-hour hands for local time and adds a hand that completes one rotation every 24 hours. Read against a 24-hour scale, that hand indicates the time in a second zone. The scale may be fixed on the dial or placed on a rotating bezel, depending on the watch. What does dual-time mean?
Dual-time describes the function of showing two time zones, rather than one particular hand-and-scale design. One arrangement uses two hour hands, each indicating a different zone; that is how Patek Philippe describes its dual-time watches. Since manufacturer and retail terminology can overlap, the name alone does not tell you exactly how a given model works.

How do GMT and dual-time differ in practice?
Display
A typical GMT watch uses a 24-hour hand and scale for the second zone, making it possible to distinguish whether that zone is in the day or night. A dual-time watch may instead use a second 12-hour hand or another display. Check the particular model’s dial and instructions to see which time each hand represents.

Setting for travel
Setting mechanisms vary by watch. On the GMT-Master II, Rolex says the local hour hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments without stopping the watch or moving the other hands. That preserves the reference-time indication while changing local time, but it is a feature of that model—not a rule for every GMT watch. Rolex’s history of the GMT-Master II describes this adjustment.
Using the scale or bezel
A 24-hour scale may be fixed or paired with a rotating bezel. On some watches, rotating the bezel lets the wearer read an additional time-zone offset. Tudor’s GMT tutorial explains how its GMT hand and bezel can be used to read a third zone. Whether that is possible—and how to do it—depends on the model and its setting.

How to choose between them
Compare the watch’s actual display and operation against how you plan to use it:

- Second-zone display: Is it a 24-hour hand and scale, a second 12-hour hand, or another arrangement?
- Travel adjustment: Can the local hour hand move independently? Does adjusting it affect the reference-time indication or minutes?
- Scale and bezel: Is the 24-hour scale fixed or rotating, and can the bezel help you read another zone?
- Legibility: Can you quickly identify both times and tell whether it is day or night in the second zone?
Neither label establishes that a watch is better for travel or easier to use. The useful comparison is the model’s specific display, adjustment method and readability.

Dual-time is not the same as world-time
Dual-time watches show two zones; world-time watches are designed to display many zones. Patek Philippe distinguishes its dual-time watches from world-time watches, which display at least 24 cities and their time zones. Its complications overview explains the distinction.
