What to Look for When Buying a GMT Watch

The best GMT watch for you depends first on how its time-zone setting works. Then compare fit, legibility, water resistance, reserve and certification for the exact reference.

Choose a GMT watch by how it handles time-zone changes first, then check fit, legibility, water resistance, movement and certification against the exact reference you plan to buy. “GMT” does not guarantee a particular setting method: consult the model’s manual to confirm which hand moves independently and whether changing local time leaves your reference time undisturbed.

Start with how you will use the second time zone

A GMT watch adds a 24-hour indication so you can track another time zone. On the Rolex GMT-Master II, for example, a dedicated 24-hour hand reads against a rotatable 24-hour bezel. That arrangement is one design, not a definition of how every GMT watch must work.

Frequent travel: look for an independently adjustable local hour

If you regularly cross time zones, check whether the local hour hand can be moved in one-hour steps while the reference time remains set. The Rolex GMT-Master II brochure for reference 126715CHNR describes an independently rapid-setting hour hand for setting a second time zone. Verify the behavior for the exact watch and caliber in its manual; do not infer it from the word “GMT.” Rolex’s GMT-Master II feature page explains its second-zone hand and bezel, and its brochure gives reference-specific details.

Mostly tracking home or work: prioritize clear reading

If you mainly want to know the time elsewhere without frequent resets, focus on whether the 24-hour scale and hand are easy for you to read. Some watches use a rotating bezel as part of the display, so consider whether its markings are clear and its operation suits your routine. Check the manual for the exact setting process before buying.

Check fit beyond case diameter

Diameter is useful for narrowing options, but it does not tell the whole fit story. Compare thickness, lug-to-lug length when the maker provides it, lug width, case shape, and how the bracelet or strap adjusts on your wrist. The cited Tudor Black Bay GMT reference is 41 mm wide and 14.6 mm thick, with 22 mm lugs; the cited Longines Spirit Zulu Time is 39 mm. Those figures describe the named references, not every size in either collection.

Try the watch on if possible, especially if you are sensitive to thickness or have a smaller wrist. Check how the clasp or strap can be adjusted for a secure fit, and confirm lug width and end-link compatibility before choosing a replacement strap.

Assess legibility and everyday operation

  • Read the 24-hour display: Check hand-to-scale contrast and whether the markings remain distinguishable at a glance.
  • Inspect the bezel: If the watch has one, confirm the scale is legible and understand whether it rotates bidirectionally or unidirectionally.
  • Consider low-light reading: Examine the luminous elements in person or in clear product images; manufacturer specification pages do not establish comparative real-world legibility.
  • Try the crown and controls: A GMT setting method is only useful if you can operate it confidently. Follow the instructions for the specific caliber.

Match water resistance to the watch’s intended use

Water resistance varies by reference and should be considered alongside the manufacturer’s guidance and the watch’s condition. The cited Rolex GMT-Master II brochure reference is listed at 100 m, Tudor lists 200 m for the cited Black Bay GMT, and Longines lists 300 m for the cited HydroConquest GMT. These are model specifications, not blanket guarantees for every watch in those families or a substitute for care instructions.

Do not treat a rating alone as permission for any water activity. Check the maker’s guidance for the intended exposure, and account for the condition of a pre-owned watch and its seals.

Rank #3
Timex Men's Waterbury Traditional GMT 39mm Watch - Stainless Steel Bracelet Black Dial Stainless Steel Case
  • Quartz GMT Movement - When used in conjunction with the black and blue rotating bezel, the two-blue and white triangle GMT hand can be used to track a second time zone.
  • Stainless-steel - The stainless-steel case and bracelet are resistant to corrosion, rust, and daily wear and tear.
  • Date Window - Easily track the date in a dedicated window beside 3 o'clock.
  • Enhanced Visibility - Luminant hands ensure readability in low-light conditions.

Compare movement, reserve and certification by exact reference

Power reserve tells you how long a fully wound watch is specified to run when it is not being worn; the useful comparison is the figure for the specific reference you are considering. Certification claims also need to be read on their own terms: COSC and Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer are not interchangeable labels.

Exact example Published movement and reserve Published certification
Rolex GMT-Master II, reference 126715CHNR brochure Approximately 70 hours Rolex Superlative Chronometer; Rolex describes this as including COSC certification and Rolex certification after casing
Tudor Black Bay GMT, m79830rb-0010 MT5652 self-winding; approximately 70 hours COSC
Longines Spirit Zulu Time, L3.802.4.93.2 Automatic GMT; up to 72 hours; silicon balance-spring COSC chronometer

These are published specifications for the named examples, not independent comparative tests. A longer stated reserve may mean fewer resets after time off the wrist, but it does not establish greater accuracy or reliability. Review the certification’s stated scope rather than treating different makers’ claims as equivalent.

Use reference-specific specifications to compare candidates
