Microbrand watches can be worth buying when you want a distinctive watch to wear, value the specifications at its asking price, or want to support an independent maker. They are a less dependable choice if you need predictable resale, broad brand recognition, or an extensive service network. Judge the specific maker and model—not the label “microbrand”—and buy for the watch you will own, not an assumed future return.
Are microbrand watches worth it?
It depends on what you expect from the purchase. A microbrand may offer a design or combination of features that appeals to you at its price. The trade-off is that a smaller maker may have less established resale demand, fewer service options, or less certain access to model-specific parts than a widely recognized brand. Those differences vary by maker and watch; “microbrand” is not a quality grade.

Microbrands.co advises buyers to choose a watch they would still be happy to wear if its resale value never changes: “More importantly, buy a watch you would be happy to wear even if its resale value never moves.” That is a sensible way to frame the purchase: enjoyment and value to you are more reliable reasons than hoped-for appreciation.
Do microbrand watches hold their value?
There is no reliable universal resale percentage for microbrand watches. Editorial guides describe secondary-market demand as uneven and the market as less liquid than established watch markets. Some sought-after models attract buyers, but those examples do not establish what another model will sell for, or how long it will take to find a buyer. The available guides are not based on a market-wide transaction dataset.

Microbrands.co names Halios and Unimatic as examples of brands with secondary-market interest and discusses Baltic as an approach with broader appeal. These are the guide’s characterizations, not verified price data or guarantees of resale. A 5D Watches guide also describes resale as weak for much of the category, but its illustrative used-price range for a $600 watch is not supported by an underlying dataset in the cited passage and should not be treated as a category statistic.
Price and liquidity are separate considerations: even if a buyer is willing to pay a particular amount, finding that buyer may take time. Before purchasing, look for recent completed sales of the exact model where available, rather than relying on asking prices or a brand’s reputation alone. WatchPolice publishes resale ranges, but its page does not identify an original transaction dataset; treat its figures as that publication’s estimates, not independently verified market facts.
Can a normal watchmaker service a microbrand watch?
Sometimes. A watchmaker familiar with a commonly used movement may be able to service that caliber. But movement serviceability is not the same as being able to repair the whole watch: a repair may require a model-specific crystal, crown tube, bezel insert, bracelet component, or other part that is difficult to source, especially if a brand closes or discontinues the model.

What should you check about warranty and support?
Warranty terms are not standardized across microbrands or sellers. The Microbrand Store says manufacturer warranties vary and are typically two years, with movement coverage and exclusions differing by maker. It also describes a separate three-month supplemental warranty of its own. Those terms belong to that retailer and should not be assumed to apply to a different seller or region; the retailer says manufacturer warranty repairs generally require contacting the manufacturer.
Get the answers for the exact watch and seller in writing:
- What defects and components are covered, and what exclusions apply?
- How long does coverage last?
- Who handles a claim: the brand, retailer, or a third-party service center?
- Who pays shipping, and where must the watch be sent?
- Is paid service available after the warranty expires?
- What happens if a required part is discontinued?
Also read the seller’s return policy before ordering. Return windows and conditions are seller-specific, so confirm the terms that apply to your transaction rather than relying on another retailer’s policy.

A crowdfunding campaign adds delivery uncertainty, particularly when the maker has not completed an earlier production run. A dealer-authored guide warns that a first release can face delays, specification changes, or non-delivery, but provides no failure rate. That is a reason to assess the project carefully, not evidence that crowdfunding campaigns generally fail.

Check whether the maker has shipped previous production watches, whether independent owners report receiving them, and whether the campaign states clear specifications and written terms. A completed track record can reduce uncertainty; it cannot guarantee that a new release will arrive on time or exactly as described.
How to assess a specific microbrand watch
Compare the complete ownership proposition, not just the spec sheet or launch price. For two watches you are considering, use the same checks:
- Total price and included components: Account for what is actually included in the quoted price.
- Design and fit: Consider whether you like the watch and whether its dimensions and strap or bracelet suit your wrist and use.
- Movement support: Record the named caliber and confirm that a watchmaker you could use services it.
- Model-specific parts: Ask how replacement parts and post-warranty repairs are handled.
- Production history: Look for completed runs and independent owner feedback, especially for a newer maker.
- Written warranty and claim route: Confirm coverage, exclusions, shipping responsibility, and who processes a claim.
- Return terms: Check the exact seller’s conditions and deadlines before paying.
- Resale expectations: Look for evidence of demand for the precise model and allow for uncertainty in both selling price and time to sell.
There is no standardized scoring system or dependable category-wide resale figure that can replace these checks. Sean May, founder and watch consultant at 5D Watches, summed up the wear-first approach in an August 26, 2026 article: “Microbrand watches are worth the money if you buy them to wear and you go in with the right expectations.”
