What jumping seconds means
“Jumping seconds,” also called “deadbeat seconds,” describes the motion of the displayed seconds hand: it moves forward by one second at a time instead of appearing to sweep around the dial in smaller, quicker increments. That visible tick can be a deliberate mechanical complication, not a sign that the watch is malfunctioning.

A conventional mechanical watch’s balance oscillates faster than once per second. A jumping-seconds mechanism meters those faster beats into one hand advance per second. The exact mechanism varies. For example, A. Lange & Söhne describes a historic mechanism that converts six balance semi-oscillations into one hand step; that figure applies to that mechanism, not to all jumping-seconds watches. A. Lange & Söhne’s mechanism explanation provides that specific example.
How to read the seconds
Read the hand against the dial’s seconds scale. Each completed jump corresponds to one second; the hand pauses at the mark until the next jump. Count the one-second marks in the usual direction around the dial. A stop between marks is part of the display’s normal one-step-per-second motion.

On the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds, A. Lange & Söhne describes the hand as making 60 jumps per minute. That is a specification of this model, not a claim about every watch with a jumping-seconds display. The manufacturer’s product page documents the model and its display.
Setting depends on the watch, not the display
A jumping-seconds display does not tell you whether pulling the crown stops the movement, resets the seconds hand, or leaves the watch running. These are separate features. General watch-setting guidance distinguishes movements with stop seconds, which stop when the crown is pulled to the time-setting position, from movements without stop seconds, which continue running. Before you turn the crown
- Find the instructions for your exact make, model, and movement; a manual for a different watch may describe a different crown sequence.
- Check whether the watch has a date or other complications, and follow the maker’s directions for setting them.
- Confirm which crown position sets the time and whether the seconds hand should stop. Do not force the crown or assume the hand’s ticking pattern explains its setting behavior.
One documented example: A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Jumping Seconds
The Richard Lange Jumping Seconds illustrates one model-specific approach. Its manually wound L094.1 movement includes a ZERO-RESET mechanism. The manufacturer says pulling the crown makes the seconds hand jump to zero; pushing the crown home re-engages the hand with the going train and releases the balance so the watch runs again. A. Lange & Söhne describes the mechanism this way: “The ZERO-RESET mechanism is equipped with a multi-disc clutch: when the crown is pulled, the seconds hand instantly jumps to the zero position, making time setting with one-second accuracy possible.”
This sequence is specific to the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds. Do not apply it to another watch unless its own manual confirms the same operation. The maker also describes this model’s constant-force escapement as supplying an impulse every second to drive the hand’s 60 jumps per minute; that implementation is not a universal design for jumping seconds.

If the hand does not behave as expected
- The hand steps and pauses: that is the expected display pattern for jumping seconds.
- The hand keeps moving while the crown is pulled: the movement may not have stop seconds. Check its manual before attempting to synchronize the display.
- The hand jumps to zero when the crown is pulled: the watch may have a model-specific reset feature, as the Richard Lange does. Verify the behavior in the exact model’s instructions.
- The hand does not advance or the crown feels resistant: stop rather than forcing the crown, and consult the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker.
