A tourbillon is designed to counter rate variations caused by gravity in certain watch positions, but its presence alone does not show that a modern wristwatch will keep better time than a conventional watch. To compare accuracy, look at the specific watch’s rate claims and the scope of any certification.
What a tourbillon does
A tourbillon places the escapement and balance wheel—the parts that regulate a mechanical watch’s rate—inside a rotating cage. As the cage turns, it changes their orientation, distributing positional rate variations rather than leaving the regulating parts in one position. Breguet says Abraham-Louis Breguet received the tourbillon patent on 26 June 1801. Its account of the invention describes the aim as helping timepieces “maintain the same accuracy, whatever the vertical or inclined position of the watch.” That is a description of the original design purpose, not a guarantee for every modern watch.

The problem was especially relevant to pocket watches, which could spend long stretches held in a vertical position. Gravity can affect the regularity of a balance wheel and hairspring, the regulating organ of a mechanical movement. Audemars Piguet likewise explains that a rotating cage is intended to offset running differences associated with vertical positions. These explanations describe the mechanism’s rationale; they do not establish that every tourbillon watch performs better in everyday wear.
Why the mechanism does not guarantee better wristwatch accuracy
A wristwatch moves through many orientations during ordinary use, unlike a pocket watch that may remain in one position for an extended period. The effect of a tourbillon therefore depends on the watch’s construction and how it is worn. Jaeger-LeCoultre notes that multi-axis tourbillons vary orientation across more than one axis, unlike single-axis designs. That describes design intent, not proof that a multi-axis tourbillon outperforms a well-regulated conventional watch on the wrist.

- Independently developed CAL9001 free-sprung balance flying tourbillon movement, manual winding, 28,880 vibrations per hour, 25 ruby bearings. Features high-end finishing including satin brushing and beveled edges, engraved brand logo with gold-stamped. Dual mainspring series technology delivers 80-hour power reserve (twice that of standard tourbillon movements). This technology ensures more uniform and gradual mainspring release, resulting in enhanced timekeeping precision and stability.
- The CAL9001 tourbillon movement features the exclusive free-sprung micro-adjustment technology typically reserved for luxury timepieces. This free-sprung system eliminates the need for a balance spring regulator, thereby overcoming the timing inaccuracies caused by regulator displacement in conventional mechanical movements. This ensures the watch delivers enhanced precision and stability in timekeeping.
- This tourbillon measures 40mm in diameter and just 9.7mm in thickness, weighing a mere 67 grams. Its meticulously engineered structure and radically skeletonized tourbillon movement eliminate all superfluous metal components, allowing the mechanical artistry of the free-sprung flying tourbillon to shine in its purest form. It is an exquisite, high-end tourbillon watch that is both ultra-thin and supremely comfortable.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an Italian leather strap with hand-stitched detailing for comfortable and durable wear. We offer a three-year worldwide warranty.
The available sources do not establish a controlled, modern head-to-head comparison between otherwise comparable tourbillon and non-tourbillon wristwatches. It would be too broad to claim that tourbillons are inherently more accurate, or that the complication guarantees precision. A result for one calibre cannot be generalized to all watches with the complication.
How to compare a watch’s documented accuracy
Start with the evidence for the exact model and calibre rather than the complication’s name. Certification can be useful, but the label matters less than what was tested and what the result covers.

- This tourbillon features a high-tech ceramic bezel. Ceramic resists discoloration and is harder than metal, protecting the watch from scratches. Weighing half as much as stainless steel, it reduces wrist strain for enhanced comfort.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters. Featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an aerospace-grade fluororubber strap, it offers waterproof, sweat-resistant, and corrosion-resistant properties for comfortable and durable wear. Featuring Super-LumiNova Luminous hands and hour markers. We provide a 3-year worldwide warranty.
- Published rate: Check the manufacturer’s stated tolerance or a measured result, and note whether it applies to the exact model or calibre.
- What is certified: Determine whether a test applies to the movement alone or to the complete, cased watch.
- Test conditions: Check which positions, temperatures and use conditions the test includes. A standardized result is meaningful within its stated scope.
- Your priority: Separate documented timekeeping performance from interest in visible mechanics, craftsmanship or collecting.
ISO 3159 chronometer and METAS certification
METAS explains that under ISO 3159 a chronometer is a movement whose average daily rate deviation falls between −4 and +6 seconds. The movement is tested by an accredited laboratory using standardized procedures. METAS distinguishes this movement-only chronometer test from Master Chronometer certification, which confirms that a mechanical watch meets defined METAS requirements. See METAS’s explanation of watch certification for the distinction; “chronometer” and “tourbillon” describe different things, and neither label should be treated as a substitute for checking the test scope.

The COSC certification update reported in 2026
In an update dated 12 March 2026, the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported that COSC is adding an “Excellence Chronometer Certified” level. The described test includes simulated daily wrist wear, followed by a measured rate deviation between −2 and +4 seconds per day. This is a separate certification development from the ISO 3159 range above; check the certifier’s active requirements when assessing a watch. The update is described by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.

What one historical result can—and cannot—tell you
Jaeger-LeCoultre reports that its first tourbillon calibre won a chronometry competition in 1946 with a variation of ±1 second per day. That figure is the manufacturer’s account of one historical competition result, not an expected rate for modern tourbillon watches generally. Its discussion of gravity and single- versus multi-axis designs appears in Valley of Inventions. For the invention’s history and original positional rationale, see Breguet’s account of the 1801 patent; Audemars Piguet also explains the tourbillon’s operating principle.
What to take from the complication
A tourbillon is a genuine response to positional rate variation, developed for the circumstances of pocket-watch use. On a modern wristwatch, it remains a feature of the movement—not stand-alone evidence of superior everyday timekeeping. Judge accuracy from the exact watch’s documented rate and the conditions and object its test actually covers.
