Rolex watches can retain value better than many luxury goods, but they are not dependable investments. The outcome depends on the exact reference, what you pay, how long you hold it and what you net when you sell. Treat a Rolex first as a watch you want to own; any resale value is uncertain.
What the market figures say—and what they do not
Recent market snapshots show why a single brand-wide number cannot predict an individual buyer’s result. The measures below cover different periods and compare different things; none is a guaranteed return or a forecast.

| Measure | Reported result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| WatchCharts Rolex Market Index, October 10, 2026 | +5.2% over one year; -11.0% over five years | Market-price changes for a transaction-value-weighted basket of the top 30 Rolex models, rebalanced annually. It is not the return of a particular watch or owner. WatchCharts index |
| Morgan Stanley/WatchCharts value retention, Q2 snapshot reported June 29, 2026 | +9.8% for Rolex overall; +35% for Oyster Perpetuals; -21% for Sea-Dwellers versus retail | Secondary-market prices compared with official retail prices. These collection-level differences make the brand average a poor substitute for reference-specific evidence. WatchPro’s report |
| EveryWatch, H1 2026 | +6.1% average value retention; 75.8% of Rolex references above retail | Separate catalogue-level measures: the average premium or discount versus retail, and the share of references above retail. Neither measures an individual seller’s net proceeds. EveryWatch H1 2026 report |
These figures need not agree: WatchCharts tracks a defined index basket, Morgan Stanley/WatchCharts reports price retention against retail, and EveryWatch reports its own transaction and catalogue statistics. Keep each figure attached to its publisher, date, and metric rather than combining them into a supposed Rolex investment-return figure.

Large market share is not an owner’s return
EveryWatch reported that Rolex accounted for 41% of secondary-market value in H1 2026. It also reported $10.5 billion in secondary-market sold value, up 37.2%, across 795,000 watches sold, up 18.7%. Those figures describe market activity, not the profit an owner makes on a watch.

CPO sales measure activity, not appreciation
EveryWatch reported $385.4 million in Rolex Certified Pre-Owned sales in H1 2026, up 101.3% year over year. That rise indicates activity in the CPO channel; it does not show that a particular Rolex appreciated by that amount or will sell for more later.
Why your entry price and exact watch matter
A brand average can conceal sharply different results between collections, and even a collection figure does not establish the value of every reference or configuration. Before buying, compare the exact watch with recent transactions for the same reference—not just a retail price, a listing, or a seller’s claim that it is scarce.
- Reference and configuration: Match the precise reference and configuration; do not assume a model family’s average applies to it.
- Price paid: A premium purchase price leaves less room for resale value to cover your costs. Compare the asking price with recent market transactions.
- Condition and service: Include any service needs and condition differences in your valuation.
- Completeness and records: Confirm what the sale includes. A box or papers do not, by themselves, guarantee authenticity.
- Seller and terms: Establish who is selling the watch and what authentication, service, return, and warranty terms actually apply.
The evidence does not establish one universally best Rolex reference to buy now. A sound comparison depends on your location, budget, holding period, entry price, and the transaction evidence for the exact watch.

“Above retail” is not the same as profit
A consumer-facing resale price or market index is not necessarily what an owner receives. A dealer’s purchase offer is typically below the price at which a dealer sells to a consumer; consignment can involve fees and may take time. Compare net proceeds with your complete acquisition cost, not merely the original retail price or a current asking price.
Compare realistic exit routes
- Dealer sale: Ask for a direct buy offer and compare it with other offers. The amount is the dealer’s offer, not the public resale asking price.
- Consignment: Establish the fee, expected timing, and other sale terms before counting the advertised price as proceeds.
- Marketplace sale: Account for the costs and terms that apply to the specific platform and transaction.
For a personal return calculation, include acquisition costs, carrying costs, insurance, maintenance, applicable taxes, and sale costs. The figures available here do not establish those costs for a particular buyer or jurisdiction. Consider how quickly you might need to sell as well as the possible price.

Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programme is a defined second-hand channel through participating Official Rolex Retailers, not a blanket description for every pre-owned Rolex. In a May 2025 press release, Rolex said programme watches must be at least two years old, return to Rolex workshops for inspection and verification of their original configuration, and be fully serviced. A CPO watch is sold with a new two-year international guarantee from its sale date. Rolex notes exceptions for some oldest models concerning water resistance and original precision.

Rolex states: “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” In the CPO context, Rolex describes returning eligible watches to its workshops for inspection and verification of original configuration. Check the current programme retailer locator and local stock; participation and inventory vary. Rolex also recommends buying new or second-hand through Official Rolex Retailers. How to decide whether buying one makes sense for you
- Set the purpose: If you want a watch to wear and can afford it without relying on resale, assess it as a luxury purchase. If your main goal is investment return, compare it with diversified financial alternatives.
- Identify the exact candidate: Record the reference, configuration, condition, service history, included documentation, and seller.
- Check relevant transactions: Use recent evidence for that reference and your market. Treat an asking price as an asking price, not proof of a completed sale.
- Estimate net proceeds: Obtain a realistic dealer offer or calculate consignment and other selling costs. Compare the result with the full amount you expect to spend and own the watch.
- Choose a holding period you can tolerate: The cited index was up over one year but down over five years as of October 10, 2026. Past changes do not predict future prices, and you may have to sell when the market is unfavorable.
There is no basis for claims that Rolex always rises in value or is a guaranteed investment. The data show uneven outcomes among collections and a negative five-year index change in the cited snapshot. Buy because the watch and price make sense to you, not because an aggregate premium promises a profit.
