Often, yes—but they take a different reading habit. Find the active hour numeral first, then read the minutes from the scale it points to or from a separate minute hand, depending on the watch. A prominent numeral and clear minute markings help; busy mechanics and low contrast can make the display harder to parse. No independent head-to-head study establishes that wandering-hour watches are universally easier or harder to read than conventional watches.
How to read a wandering-hour watch
- Find the active hour numeral. The numerals move across the dial; one indicates the current hour.
- Read the minutes from that numeral’s position. Some watches use a marked arc, while others use a separate minute hand. Check the individual watch’s layout rather than assuming every wandering-hour display works the same way.
- Combine the hour and minutes. In ATOWAK’s explanatory example, an 8 aligned with the 35-minute mark reads 8:35. This illustrates the reading method; it is not a test result. ATOWAK’s explanation describes the hour-first, minutes-next sequence.
For a different layout, 5D Watches describes a traditional Star Wheel with a separate sweeping minute hand. DWISS’s S1 page describes satellite discs carrying the hour numerals, with the active numeral pointing to a minute scale and seconds shown on a central disc. These examples show why it is worth learning the specific watch’s minute indication.

What affects readability?
How clearly the active hour stands out
The first task is identifying which moving numeral is current. A numeral that is easy to distinguish from the others makes that step more direct.

Minute scale or hand legibility
On an arc-based display, visible, well-spaced minute markings help you translate the active numeral’s position into a time. On a watch with a separate minute hand, the hand and its track need to be easy to follow.

Dial clutter and contrast
Open-worked mechanics and decorative layers may compete with the hour numeral or minute track. Contrast, numeral size and scale placement are useful things to inspect on the actual model. These are practical design considerations, not results from a standardized comparison.
Familiarity with the display
Because the primary hour indication is not a conventional central hour hand, a first-time wearer may need to adjust to reading the hour before the minutes. ATOWAK describes that sequence as guidance from the brand, not as a measured acclimation time.

Wandering hours are not jump hours
In a wandering-hour display, the hour numerals move across the dial. In a jump-hour watch, the current hour appears in a fixed window and changes by jumping to the next numeral. The terms describe different ways of showing the hour, even though both depart from the familiar central hour hand. 5D Watches explains this distinction in its overview of the complication.
Examples of different wandering-hour layouts
The complication is a display principle, not one single construction. The brand descriptions below illustrate different approaches; they do not establish which is easiest to read.

- Wandering Hour Display: A Minimalist approach beyond convention, with hours drifting in continuous motion alongside the minutes. At the dial’s centre, a singular wandering assembly traces minutes; along its path, an hour disc rotates calmly, read against a fixed marker.

| Example | Minute-reading layout described | Other relevant detail |
|---|---|---|
| DWISS S1 | The active satellite numeral points to a minute scale; seconds appear on a central disc. | DWISS lists the S1 Black as a 40 mm watch with a 68-hour power reserve and 100 m water resistance. These specifications do not establish its legibility. DWISS product page |
| Traditional Star Wheel, as described by 5D Watches | A separate sweeping minute hand. | This is a description of a traditional layout, not a specification for every watch bearing the wandering-hours name. |
| Urwerk UR-103T, as described by Phillips | Four rotating satellite carriers, each bearing an hour numeral and traversing a 60-minute arc. | Phillips presents it as a historical example of an unconventional time display. Phillips’ Fall 2026 auction editorial |
A short history of the display
Phillips reports that the Campani brothers developed the display for Pope Alexander VII’s night clocks in the 17th century, and that Audemars Piguet revived it for the wrist with the Star Wheel in 1991. 5D Watches likewise attributes the mechanism’s origin to the Campani brothers, giving the year 1655, and describes the 1991 Star Wheel as its modern revival. These accounts come from auction-house and dealer editorial sources rather than a primary archive, so the precise historical attribution is best treated as their account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before choosing one
- Can you identify the active hour numeral quickly?
- Are the minute markings or separate minute hand clear at a glance?
- Does the dial’s decoration or visible mechanism distract from the time display?
- Does the watch use the kind of minute indication you find easiest to follow?
These checks can help you assess a specific watch, but they are not a standardized readability score. The cited sources provide descriptions and guidance, not controlled, head-to-head legibility results.
