What is the Rolex Daytona “The Legend”?
Christie’s catalogue identifies case 2,330,402 as a circa-1969 manual-wind Rolex Daytona reference 6263 in 18K yellow gold. It has a 37.5 mm case, a lemon dial with white subsidiary graphics, and an 18K gold Oyster bracelet with a deployant clasp. “Paul Newman” describes an exotic dial style, not a separate Rolex reference. On this example, the lemon-colored dial, dark registers and white markings create the distinctive look. Fratello’s 2022 preview also describes screw-down pushers, a black acrylic bezel and a Valjoux calibre 727. What is known about case 2,330,402’s auction history?
Christie’s records the watch’s earlier appearance at Antiquorum Geneva on May 12, 2013, where it sold for CHF 841,300. The catalogue says it later passed through important private collections before the Christie’s sale. Fratello reported a CHF/US$3–5 million estimate for Christie’s forthcoming 2022 auction. The sources cited here do not establish a verified realized price for case 2,330,402 at the 2022 sale. Do not treat its estimate as the result.
Why do auction reports give “The Legend” different prices?
Phillips’ Geneva Watch Auction: FIVE catalogue describes a different circa-1969 yellow-gold 6263 with a lemon dial: case 2,330,529. Phillips used “The Legend” in its lot heading and reports a sale price of CHF 3,722,000 in 2017. That result belongs to case 2,330,529, not the Christie’s case 2,330,402. Phillips lot catalogue

What should a buyer or collector check in an auction record?
- Identity: Match the case number, reference and dial details; similar nicknames do not establish that two catalogues describe the same watch.
- Price type: Separate estimates from completed-sale prices, and retain the auction date and currency when quoting a result.
- Configuration: Check which technical specifications the catalogue assigns to that particular watch rather than generalizing them to all 6263s.
- Rarity wording: Treat “publicly known” as a statement about documented public appearances, not proof of a complete population count.
