The Maggiore Challenge is a one-off customization of a client-owned Rolex Daytona reference 116505, inspired by the client’s childhood memories of Lake Maggiore in Italy. It was not a new Rolex model or a standard watch offered for sale: the 2021 project reports describe a private commission, while Artisans de Genève says it works independently on watches commissioned by clients and does not manufacture or sell watches.
What is The Maggiore Challenge?
Artisans de Genève customized a Rolex Daytona 116505 for a private client identified in public coverage only as Mr. R.D.L. Fratello Watches reported on the project on July 26, 2021, and IMBOLDN followed on July 27. Both describe the Daytona as the basis for the commission, rather than a new release from Rolex. The name and design refer to Lake Maggiore, where the client said he spent family holidays as a child, learned a love of sailing from his father, and came to appreciate nature. Those details are the client’s own recollections as quoted in the project coverage; his full identity is not disclosed.
How does the design evoke Lake Maggiore?
The reported palette brings together rose gold, gray anthracite, transparent sapphire, and orange accents. Rather than reproduce a landscape literally, the design uses warm and dark contrasts to give the modified Daytona a personal connection to the client’s memories.

Sapphire makes the movement part of the display
Project reports describe a sapphire dial and a sapphire display case back, giving views of the modified Rolex 4130 chronograph movement from both sides. The movement was reported as skeletonized and refinished in gray anthracite. Its components were described as hand-cut, hand-beveled, and polished. These are details attributed to the 2021 coverage, not claims of an independent inspection or performance test.
Rose gold and orange provide contrast
Rose-gold hour markers, subdial borders, and custom hands stand out against the transparent dial and darker movement. Black translucent rings around the dial and subdials are described as helping preserve legibility. An orange tip on the central seconds hand and white-painted details on the subdial hands add smaller points of contrast.

The design balances visibility of the mechanical structure with the need to read the chronograph display. The reports establish an aesthetic treatment; they do not establish improved accuracy, performance, or durability.
Is it a Rolex model you can buy?
The Maggiore Challenge is presented in the available project coverage as a private-client customization of a client-owned Daytona, not as a production Rolex model or a standard Artisans de Genève product. Artisans de Genève’s current Challenges page says the atelier is independent, is not affiliated with or authorized by watch brands, and does not manufacture or sell watches; its work is commissioned at clients’ requests and intended for private use.

The 2021 reports do not establish a price, customization duration, current owner, present condition, or current sale offer for this particular watch. Its availability for purchase has not been established, so the Rolex Daytona 116505 is best understood here as the donor watch named in the reports—not as a listing for the customized Maggiore.
