Audemars Piguet’s current version pairs that wandering-hours display with a 41 mm black ceramic and 18-carat white-gold case, blue aventurine dial and selfwinding Calibre 4310.
How the Starwheel’s wandering-hours display works
Instead of reading an hour hand against fixed markers, you read the hour numeral that has moved into position beside the curved minute track. The track sits along the upper arc of the dial, so the display presents the hour as moving across the dial while the minutes are read from the arc.
At the center, a rotor completes one revolution every three hours and carries three independently rotating aluminium discs. Each disc bears the digits 1 through 12. As the rotor turns, the discs rotate on their own axes to keep the numerals oriented for reading; the numeral positioned at the minute scale indicates the current hour. The discs carry the numerals—they are not hour hands.
A slightly curved 18-carat white-gold seconds hand follows the contours of the discs. Blue aventurine provides the dial’s backdrop.

What is the Code 11.59 Starwheel?
It is Audemars Piguet’s contemporary take on the wandering-hours complication, incorporated into the Code 11.59 collection. The current model has a 41 mm case interweaving black ceramic and 18-carat white gold, a blue aventurine dial and a double-curved sapphire crystal. Its wandering-hours discs are black PVD-coated aluminium, according to the U.S. product page.
Powering the watch is selfwinding Calibre 4310, which Audemars Piguet describes as derived from Calibre 4309 with a new module. The company calls it a next-generation hours, minutes and seconds movement.

Why Audemars Piguet calls it Starwheel
Audemars Piguet traces the wandering-hours complication to the 17th century and says it rediscovered and reintroduced the mechanism in 1991 under the Starwheel name. The company says the complication appeared in its watches until the early 2000s before returning in the Code 11.59 collection. That history is the brand’s account.
Sébastian Vivas, Audemars Piguet’s Heritage and Museum Director, describes the complication as “Invented in 1655 thanks to a request by Pope Alexander VII, who suffered from insomnia that was exacerbated by the ticking of his clock, the wandering hours complication was rediscovered by Audemars Piguet in 1991 and combines history, technical challenges, design and poetry.” This is an attributed statement from the brand, not independent historical verification.
