The Bulova Accutron Amerigo is a reference-dependent watch family, not one fixed specification. The documented examples include an automatic three-hand model and a quartz chronograph, so identify the reference before judging its movement, functions, size, or water resistance. The available descriptions are not a hands-on review: they do not establish how an individual watch wears, keeps time, or performs today.
Which Bulova Accutron Amerigo reference is it?
Start with the number on the caseback and compare it with the seller’s documentation. “Amerigo” alone is not enough to identify the movement or features. Two documented examples show why:
| Reference | Movement and functions | Case and water resistance | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 63B021 | Automatic ETA 2824-2; date | 41 mm stainless steel; sapphire crystal; listed at 50 m; 20 mm lug width | Second Hand Horology retailer listing; these are listing claims for this reference, not independently verified measurements or a condition assessment. Source |
| 63C108, Amerigo XL Chrono | Quartz Ronda 8040.N; chronograph, big date, retrograde weekday | 44.0 mm steel; reported at 5 ATM | Gressive report published in 2012; it documents this configuration, not current availability or the condition of any watch offered today. Source |
WatchCharts also has separate entries for Amerigo references 63B023 and 65C110. Those entries reinforce that the family includes multiple references; a market estimate shown for one reference is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a general Amerigo price. 63B023 · 65C110.
What the Accutron name does—and does not—tell you
Bulova dates the introduction of the original Accutron to 1960 and describes it as a tuning-fork watch. That history explains the name’s significance, but it does not mean an Amerigo uses a tuning-fork movement. The documented 63B021 is described as an ETA automatic, while the 63C108 is described as a Ronda quartz chronograph. Bulova’s heritage history.

A historical Bulova pamphlet describes the original Accutron mechanism as lacking a balance wheel and hairspring. That statement concerns the historical electronic timepiece, not the Amerigo models above. The National Watch and Clock Museum’s catalog records Bulova Accutron materials, including service manuals and material related to the 1960 premiere, but its catalog description is not an Amerigo-specific service manual. How to assess an Amerigo listing
Once the reference is established, compare the watch’s actual configuration and condition with what the listing claims. A reference number is a starting point, not proof that a used example is complete, unmodified, or functioning properly.

- Confirm the reference. Request a clear caseback photograph and any original paperwork. Check that the number matches the listing and the claimed movement.
- Verify movement and functions. For a 63B021 listing, check for an automatic movement and date display; for a 63C108 listing, check for the chronograph, big date, and retrograde weekday display. Do not assume these descriptions cover every Amerigo.
- Inspect condition and documentation. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case, crystal, bracelet or strap, and movement where appropriate. Request service records and an explanation of any known faults. The cited descriptions do not establish the condition of a specific watch for sale.
- Check fit and dimensions. The 63B021 retailer listing gives a 41 mm case and 20 mm lug width; the 2012 63C108 report gives a 44.0 mm case. Confirm the exact watch’s measurements and strap or bracelet fit rather than transferring figures between references.
- Treat water resistance as a current condition question. The published rating belongs to a reference description, not a test of an older individual watch. Have resistance checked by a qualified watchmaker before exposing a pre-owned example to water.
Automatic versus quartz: the practical distinction
The documented 63B021 and 63C108 differ in both movement type and complications. The automatic listing identifies a date; the quartz report identifies chronograph timing, a big date, and a retrograde weekday. The available sources do not establish comparative accuracy, durability, comfort, or value, so those qualities cannot be ranked from the reference descriptions alone.
A winder is relevant only if the specific watch is an automatic model and its maker’s settings are appropriate. Clinks lists selected automatic Amerigo references with a suggested 650 turns per day, bidirectionally; this is secondary accessory guidance, not a universal setting or a recommendation for quartz models. Confirm the exact reference and follow the winder manufacturer’s instructions. Clinks winder settings.

Verdict
The Amerigo can only be reviewed accurately by reference. The available evidence supports a 63B021 automatic example and a distinctly different 63C108 quartz chronograph, but it does not establish a complete lineup, current production or availability, market-wide value, or the real-world performance of an individual watch. For a pre-owned purchase, the caseback reference, movement, condition, service history, fit, and current water-resistance verification matter more than the family name alone.
