Why it is called the Beast
“The Beast” originally referred to the first Royal Oak Offshore, introduced in 1993. Audemars Piguet’s archive says that 42 mm model also became known as the “Sea elephant.” The modern ceramic watch borrows the identity as a callback to that large, attention-commanding Offshore; it is not the original watch or its reference. The archive page also covers Ref. 77151, a separate 30 mm model from 1996. Its recorded sales figure of 276 examples for 1996–2005 belongs to that reference, not to the black ceramic Offshore.

Monochrome’s 2023 technical specifications list the case at 42 mm in diameter and 15.3 mm in height, with 100 m water resistance. Its case construction includes a sapphire crystal, titanium-and-sapphire caseback, screw-down crown and eight white-gold bezel screws. What “hands-on” reviews establish about its presence
HODINKEE reviewer Mark Kauzlarich described it as “a faithful callback to the first Offshore nicknamed ‘The Beast’ due to its size and weight,” and still “pretty imposing.” That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal fit judgment: the published 42 mm diameter and 15.3 mm height offer useful context, but do not establish how the watch will sit on a particular wrist.
