The Royal Oak Offshore arrived in 1993 as a larger, thicker, more overtly sporty interpretation of the same design language. The clearest modern comparison is between specific references: a cited 41 mm Royal Oak Selfwinding and a 42 mm Offshore chronograph differ by just 1 mm in diameter, but the Offshore is 4.8 mm thicker and adds a flyback chronograph. Specs vary across both collections, so the family names alone do not tell you how a particular watch will fit or function.
How the Royal Oak and Offshore differ
The Royal Oak established the design; the Offshore deliberately turned up its scale and sporting character. Both retain recognizable Royal Oak cues, but an Offshore is not simply a Royal Oak with a different dial. Depending on the reference, the two families can differ in case dimensions, complication, materials, bracelet or strap, and water resistance.

Why the Offshore was created
The Royal Oak set the foundation
Audemars Piguet dates the Royal Oak’s debut to 1972 and credits designer Gérald Genta. The original reference 5402 had a 39 mm tonneau-shaped case, an octagonal bezel, an integrated bracelet and a Tapisserie dial. Its high-end finishing applied to a steel sports watch challenged conventions of the period. Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak history explains the original design and its place in the collection.

The Offshore pushed scale and sportiness
Designer Emmanuel Gueit began drawing the Offshore in April 1989. The early sketches already showed an oversized 42 mm case and a very thick gasket; the watch launched in 1993. AP records the first Offshore, reference 25721, at 42 mm in diameter and 14.05 mm thick, dimensions considered outrageous at the time. Gueit described his intention in a 2016 interview quoted by AP: “My idea was to make it large and thick.” See the AP Chronicles heritage archive for the Offshore’s history.

For these references, the Offshore is only 1 mm wider but 4.8 mm thicker. That profile difference is why diameter alone can understate how much more substantial an Offshore may look and feel. AP’s product pages list the specifications for the Royal Oak 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 and the Offshore 26238ST.OO.2000ST.01.
Why collection names do not guarantee a size
The 41 mm versus 42 mm example is not a rule for the collections. AP’s Royal Oak overview includes 34, 37, 38 and 41 mm sizes; Offshore history includes 30 mm and 38 mm models as well as 42 mm examples. Complications, materials, dial details, bracelet or strap configurations, and water resistance also depend on the exact reference. Check the specific model’s product information rather than assuming a family-wide specification.

What to compare before choosing a reference
Dimensions and fit
Check both diameter and thickness, then consider the full case and bracelet or strap on your wrist. The cited product information does not establish a universal wrist-size rule or an objective comfort ranking, so trying the exact watch is more useful than assuming one family will suit a particular wrist.
Movement and complication
The cited Royal Oak Selfwinding provides hours, minutes, centre seconds and date. The cited Offshore adds a flyback chronograph and uses a different calibre. Other references may have different functions, so compare the movement and complication listed for the model you are considering.

Water resistance and intended use
The example Royal Oak is rated to 50 m and the example Offshore to 100 m. These ratings describe the cited watches; do not infer suitability for a particular activity from the collection name. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact reference.
Materials and wearing configuration
Both examples are stainless steel, but the Offshore reference comes with a steel bracelet and an additional interchangeable blue rubber strap. Other references can use different materials or configurations; confirm what is included with the specific watch.

Dial and recognizable design codes
The selected Royal Oak has a blue Grande Tapisserie dial, while the cited Offshore uses a blue Petite Tapisserie dial and blue rubber pushpieces. AP identifies the octagonal bezel and eight visible hexagonal screws as enduring Royal Oak design codes, while dial patterns and execution vary by reference.
