The difference is how that spring is wound. Turn the crown on a manual-wind watch; an automatic uses a rotor that moves with your wrist to wind the spring. That changes the winding routine—not the basic fact that the watch is mechanically powered.
How the two winding systems work
A mainspring stores energy. As it unwinds, it drives the gear train and the parts that regulate timekeeping. Hamilton describes the shared movement components as the crown, mainspring, gear train, escapement and balance wheel; an automatic adds a rotor for winding.

Manual-wind
Turning the crown winds the mainspring. Patek Philippe describes manual movements as “powered by hand-turning the crown.” The wearer supplies the winding energy directly, making winding a regular, deliberate part of using the watch.

Automatic
Wrist motion turns a rotor, which winds the mainspring. Patek Philippe describes automatic movements as winding the mainspring “via a rotor powered by wrist motion.” Automatic winding can reduce the need to turn the crown while the watch is worn, but it depends on movement and does not make the watch perpetual.

What changes in everyday use?
| Consideration | Manual-wind | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| How it gains energy | Turn the crown to wind the mainspring. | Wrist motion drives a rotor that winds the mainspring; crown winding may also be possible, depending on the model. |
| Routine | Wind it by hand as needed, following the watch’s instructions. | Regular wear may keep it wound, but insufficient movement or time off the wrist can let it run down. |
| When set aside | It stops when its stored energy runs out. | It also stops when its stored energy runs out; wrist motion only replenishes the reserve while it is being moved. |
| What determines reserve | The specific caliber and model. | The specific caliber and model. |
The practical choice is often about habit. Manual winding suits someone who enjoys interacting with the watch and does not mind winding it. An automatic may suit someone who wears a watch regularly and prefers wrist motion to do some of the winding. Neither is maintenance-free: both have a finite power reserve and require model-appropriate care.
Power reserve: compare the actual models
Power reserve is how long a fully wound watch can run before it needs more energy. It varies by caliber and model, not simply by whether the watch is automatic or manual-wind.

- Patek Philippe says its self-winding movements generally have a 38-to-48-hour reserve, with some specific models excepted. This is the maker’s stated range for its movements, not a category-wide automatic-watch figure.
- NOMOS Glashütte says its hand-wound watches run for around two days to 84 hours; the upper figure applies to models with two barrels. This is a range for the maker’s watches, not all manual-wind watches.
Use the reserve stated for the exact watch or movement you are considering. If a watch will sit unworn between uses, consider whether its stated reserve fits your routine and whether you are comfortable resetting it after it stops.

Follow the manual for the particular watch. Crown operation, winding instructions and precautions can differ by model, so there is no universal number of turns that applies to every mechanical watch.

- [Mechanical Movement] This watch has manual self-winding. Please consider that mechanical watches that require manual winding can only keep time for a short time after winding. To prevent running or inaccurate time, it is advised that you verify the time periodically and wind up the chain 15–20 times.

For example, Baume & Mercier suggests about 20 clockwise turns for its watches in the circumstances described in its FAQ: when the watch has not been worn for several days or lacks sufficient reserve. That is brand-specific guidance, not a general rule for other watches. If an automatic has stopped, use its maker’s instructions to restart it rather than assuming that wearing it briefly will provide enough energy.
Accuracy is a model-level question
Winding type alone does not establish which watch keeps time more accurately. Seiko identifies mainspring condition, temperature, position, shock and magnetic products among the factors that can affect mechanical-watch accuracy. Check the individual model’s stated accuracy specification and any test standard behind it instead of assuming that automatic or manual-wind is inherently more precise.

Seiko recommends observing a mechanical watch over one week to ten days when checking its average accuracy. That is its guidance for evaluating a watch, not a guarantee that every watch will meet a particular rate over that period.
Care and service depend on the maker
Use the watch’s own manual for winding, setting and care, and follow service guidance from its manufacturer or an authorized service provider. For example, Patek Philippe recommends servicing its quartz and mechanical watches every eight to ten years through an official Service Center or Authorized Retailer. This is Patek Philippe’s recommendation for its watches, not a universal service interval for all brands or calibers.

How to choose between them
Compare specific watches rather than choosing by movement label alone. These questions help make the trade-offs concrete:
- Winding routine: Would you enjoy winding by hand, or would you rather have wrist motion contribute energy during regular wear?
- Wear pattern: How often will you wear the watch, and how long might it sit unused?
- Power reserve: What reserve does the exact movement offer, and does it fit the gaps between wears?
- Accuracy: What accuracy specification and test standard, if any, does the manufacturer provide for that model?
- Instructions and servicing: Are the winding, setting and service guidance clear, and can you access appropriate service?
- Design and fit: Compare the individual watches’ size and design; winding type does not decide which case or appearance will suit you.
Choose manual-wind if the hands-on winding routine is part of the appeal. Choose automatic if you prefer wrist-powered winding during regular wear. For reserve, accuracy and care, the specific watch’s specifications and instructions matter more than the category name.
