It gets energy from light, so it does not rely on regular wrist movement or winding. An automatic watch offers mechanical operation, but its routine can involve winding, keeping it sufficiently wound, and accepting more variation in timekeeping. Solar is not maintenance-free: it needs light, and both types still need model-appropriate care and service.
What makes one watch easier to own?
Here, “easier” means fewer routine steps to keep the watch running and ready to wear. It does not mean more durable, cheaper over its lifetime, or less likely to need repair. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a controlled comparison of lifetime costs or failure rates.

| Ownership question | Automatic mechanical | Solar |
|---|---|---|
| What supplies energy? | A mainspring, replenished by wrist movement on self-winding models; some movements can also be wound by hand. | Light converted into electrical energy and stored in a rechargeable cell. |
| What if it is left unused? | It may stop when the stored spring energy runs down. Reset and winding steps depend on the movement. | It may stop if kept away from light long enough for its charge to run low. |
| What routine attention does it need? | Wear and winding habits can affect the winding state and timekeeping. Instructions vary by caliber. | It needs suitable light exposure, especially if stored for a long time. |
| What care guidance is cited? | Seiko recommends mechanical-watch service about every three years; this is its guidance, not a universal interval. | Seiko recommends an overhaul every three or four years. Citizen says its Eco-Drive rechargeable cell does not need periodic replacement; water-resistant models still have separate water-resistance care guidance. |
These are broad movement types, not guarantees about every watch. A specific model’s power reserve, accuracy specification, water resistance, warranty, and access to service can change the ownership experience.
How much attention does an automatic watch need?
Winding and wear
A self-winding automatic uses wrist movement to replenish its mainspring. If it is not worn enough, it can lose power and stop; some automatic movements also permit manual winding. The correct winding method and the watch’s power reserve depend on its movement, so follow the model’s manual.

For its mechanical watches, Seiko recommends winding daily at a fixed time, including for self-winding types, and says more than eight hours of daily wear can help keep the mainspring sufficiently wound. These are Seiko recommendations, not universal requirements for every automatic caliber or wearer.
Timekeeping varies with use
Seiko says mechanical-watch accuracy varies with winding state, how the watch is worn, temperature, and position. That means an automatic can require more attention not only to whether it is running, but also to its timekeeping. For a comparison between particular watches, use each model’s published accuracy specification rather than assuming all automatics perform alike. Seiko: Accuracy of Mechanical watches

Does a solar watch need a battery replacement?
A solar watch stores energy in a rechargeable cell; that is different from a disposable battery that is routinely replaced. Citizen says Eco-Drive rechargeable cells do not need periodic replacement. That does not mean the cell lasts forever: Seiko notes that rechargeable-cell capacity or charging efficiency may decline with long use and usage conditions. The sources do not establish a universal replacement age. Citizen: Cell (Battery) Replacement

Solar watches still need light
Solar watches convert light into electrical energy and store it, but cannot recharge in darkness. Seiko warns that a watch kept away from light for a long time may stop. When it is not being worn, Seiko recommends exposing the dial to sunlight while avoiding excessive heat. Follow the specific model’s instructions for charging and storage. Seiko gives example illuminance levels of about 100,000 lux in direct summer sunlight, 10,000 lux on a cloudy day, about 700 lux in a general office, and about 3,000 lux at 20 cm from a 30 W fluorescent lamp. These are examples for charging guidance, not universal charging times; the required time depends on the caliber. Seiko: Solar Watches
What maintenance do both types need?
Movement service is not the same as water-resistance care
Seiko recommends service for mechanical watches about every three years, including examination and cleaning, with oiling where needed. For its solar watches, it recommends an overhaul every three or four years. These are manufacturer recommendations for care, not guarantees that every watch needs the same work on that schedule.

- A wristwatch brand developed by the Japanese watch manufacturer Citizen
- Photovoltaic Power: Generates electricity from light and continues to operate by charging, eliminating the need for regular battery replacement
- Easy-to-read dial: Simple design focused on visibility
- Lightweight and comfortable to wear with Japanese movement
- Highly Waterproof: Reliable 10 ATM water resistance / Diameter: Approx. 1.5 inches (37 mm). This unisex model can be worn by both men and women
Water resistance is a separate matter. Citizen’s US warranty terms call for water-resistance testing and resealing every two to three years for water-resistant models, including Eco-Drive. This is US warranty guidance; check the specific watch and the terms that apply in your market. A water-resistance check does not replace a movement overhaul, and a movement service interval does not establish that seals remain sound. Citizen US: Terms & Conditions

Which type fits your routine?
Choose solar if you want fewer daily steps
- You would rather not rely on regular wear or winding to keep the watch running.
- You can store it where the dial receives suitable light and will follow the model’s charging guidance.
- You are comfortable with a rechargeable cell and periodic care, without assuming it is maintenance-free.
Choose automatic if you value mechanical operation
- You enjoy a mechanical movement and do not mind winding or wearing the watch enough to keep it powered.
- You are comfortable with timekeeping that can vary with winding state, wear, temperature, and position.
- You are willing to follow the movement’s instructions and arrange appropriate service.
If the watch will spend long periods in a dark drawer, solar’s light requirement matters; if an automatic will sit unworn, its stored spring energy can run down. Neither type eliminates the need to consider storage and model-specific care.
