Why is my automatic watch losing or gaining time?
An automatic watch is a mechanical watch: its rate is assessed over time, and can change with how it is worn and stored. A single day’s gain or loss may not reflect its average performance. Seiko recommends assessing a mechanical watch over about a week or ten days of actual wear, rather than judging it from one day’s result. How to check an automatic watch that is not keeping time
- Find the exact model or movement. Look up its current instructions and stated accuracy standard. There is no one tolerance that applies to all automatic watches. Seiko, for example, directs owners to the standard in the instructions for their watch. Seiko: What can I do when my watch gains / loses too much time?
- If it stopped or was worn irregularly, follow its restart and winding instructions. Use the procedure for that model rather than a winding count found for a different watch. Seiko says regular energy supply matters and recommends daily winding at a consistent time in its mechanical-watch accuracy guidance. Its FAQ also recommends more than eight hours of daily wear for its guidance; neither recommendation is a universal requirement for other brands or calibers. - Track the rate for several days. Compare the watch with a reliable time reference under reasonably consistent wear and storage conditions. Record whether it was worn and, when off the wrist, how it was stored. Avoid drawing a conclusion from just one day’s deviation.
- Consider recent exposure or events. Note proximity to magnetic objects, temperature extremes or a strong impact. Avoid further exposure while you assess the watch.
- Arrange service if the deviation persists or the cause is concerning. Contact an authorized service provider if the rate remains outside the standard for the model, magnetism is suspected, or the watch took a strong shock.
Common causes and what to do
Insufficient winding or limited wear
Automatic winding depends on use and movement of the wearer’s arm. If a watch is worn for short periods or irregularly, it may not receive the energy it needs. Check the manual for its recommended winding and restart procedure. One Seiko instruction set for specified 4R-series movements says to turn the crown about 20 times by hand when starting from stopped; that figure applies to those listed movements only, not to all automatic watches. Magnetism
Magnetic objects can affect a mechanical watch’s rate. Seiko lists possible sources including speakers in phones or computers, magnetic clasps, hair dryers and electric razors. Moving away from a source may not solve the problem: Seiko says a mechanical watch can remain magnetized after it is separated from the magnetic source. Keep the watch away from magnetic objects; if you suspect magnetism, ask an authorized service center about demagnetization rather than trying to resolve it yourself. Temperature, resting position, use and shock
Temperature, gravity and the position in which the watch rests, regularity of use, arm movement and mainspring winding state can all influence its rate. Seiko says mechanical watches tend to lose time at high temperatures and gain time at low temperatures; it also notes that the rate can differ depending on how the watch rests when it is off the wrist. The rate may be outside the model’s standard
Do not assume a particular number of seconds gained or lost per day is normal for every automatic watch. The movement and model instructions define the relevant standard. If your measured rate remains concerning against that standard, Seiko recommends inspection by an authorized service center or appointed dealer; owners of other brands should consult the appropriate authorized service provider for their watch. When should I seek watch service?
Arrange an inspection when the watch continues to gain or lose more time than its own stated standard, when magnetism is suspected, or when an accuracy change follows a strong impact. For suspected magnetism, Seiko specifically recommends an authorized service center for demagnetization. For other brands, check with the manufacturer or an authorized provider so the diagnosis and any adjustment suit the movement.
If the watch is running and the deviation is modest, first complete the model-specific winding procedure and keep a multi-day record under consistent conditions. If it has stopped, suffered a significant shock, or its performance remains troubling, avoid guessing at internal repairs and ask a qualified provider to inspect it.
